I've had both and ported is definitely louder! But I have to say I enjoy sealed better cause I like a lot of different kinds of music. Some genres of music can sound kinda messy in a ported box. I do miss the hard hitting bass sometimes though when listening to hip-hop and dubstep but sealed boxes still sound pretty good too when listening to those genres.

@@Roof_Pizzayou’re dumb kid, it’s not about “hitting hard”. You take the same high quality subs and seal them, they won’t hit even nearly as hard. Tell me you can’t afford a system without actually telling me

Much like with car engines 'there's no replacement for displacement' i.e. don't mess around with less power and turbos just go with more cylinders and more displacement. The same applies to sub boxes, just got with bigger sealed box and more powerful amp, don't mess around with ports. V6 with a Turbo gives you boost, but only at a certain engine rpm and there is a lag which makes the whole experience unnatural feeling, great for the time you want to show off to your friend the acceleration feeling but crap to drive most of the time, wheres as a NA V12 will give you nice linear acceleration and more power naturally, fun all the time, no gimmicks. Ported boxes give you a boost but only at a certain frequency and they roll of faster below that frequency, their design inherently causes lag also (especially with rock music) they're great if you want to show your system off to your friend to show how loud and boomy it is on that particular RNB / Hip-Hop track you know plays well, but otherwise crap the rest of the time. A larger sealed box however with more power amp, will give you that nice deep bass of the ported and the loudness with linear more natural sounding roll off, great on any genre all the time, no gimmicks. So to conclude Port is a like a few cylinder engine with a turbo (more efficient yes, but at the expense of many other great things) and a large sealed box with a more power is like a NA V12 engine, i know which i would prefer.

Definitely go with seal enclosure that is too big for the sub if you want sloppy bass.... 1cu foot per 12" sub and some fiberglass lining is more than enough for tight, slamming bass.

First of all, it comes down to what 'You' call smooth and punchy. Someone else might described it differently. But how is work is this. 1) Define my goals 2) Find the correct alignment along with a driver that will deliver my goals, rather than asking; what will be better a Rockford or Kicker sub? But too many ROT seem to float around the forums, and not good or accurate ROT. Sealed = tight clean bass Ported = loud boomy bass It's a total misnomer

  • @TimpBizkit

I prefer ported simply because I can get more output for the power and type of speaker. Also they can still be fairly punchy with light enough cones and plenty of port area. My favourite for sound quality is the horn but they are big cabs for their output, even if they get a lot out of bass out of the driver and amplifier.

After many years of swearing by ported, iv'e recently been converted to sealed. My first sub i had was a aeroport active box from Halfords, edge was the brand, off the shelf 300w 12 inch for £100, bargain! Was super happy with it for 5 years. Then my next car i wanted to go more into high end car audio, i started with a 12 inch sealed Hertz in a smaller box i think like 1cubic ft, hated it, then switched to the JL twin 8 inch in slot ported enclosure (Microsoub +) was better and had it for a year but was never fully satisfied with it fully, i think cos their 8's. So then switched to a 12w6v3 in a custom aero port box, much better and loud but...i dunno didnt give me the same feeling and SQ that i felt my original £100 sub in my first car gave, so then i cut the aero port to raise the tuning frquency....better....but still i dunno not 100% happy. So then i pulled the aerotube out all together and screwed a mdf board over the hole to seal it....WOW! Bingo! I will say it doesn't go as low as the ported design, or give me that real low loud rumble, but come to think of it this was unnatural sounding anyway, you can tell sealed begins to roll-off higher but slower, and for music this is actually more natural sounding and better, the ported only really shined on specific tracks/genre, the Sealed i feel is good for all genre. The advantages of the sealed outweigh that single con, also the gain had to be turned up slightly to get the same output at the volume level as the ported did, but hey easy fix of the gain dial there. The sealed is so much more consistent across any music genre. As far as feeling it gave me better feeling of the music in my seat then the ported did which was a surprise.....go figure! Anyway iv'e had positive experience with both designs, i think it depends on the sub/box/power combination. My conclusion from my experience (whether right or wrong) are that a Bigger box with more powerful amp in sealed is best. JL says the 12w6v3 is best in 1 cubic feet sealed, but i have it in 1.7 cubic ft box and it sounds and feels amazing. I think ported is the way to go if you have a less powerfull sub i.e. 300w or lower (most entry level subs) the port design can make up for the lack of power, i don't recommenced making your own custom ported box, easy to get it wrong, try and buy a manufacture made / designed box like the JL HO boxes. Sealed you can make yourself much more forgiving of design mistakes.

It's funny how people think you can't make sealed boxes boom. Back in the late 80's - early 90's sealed boxes dominated the car audio scene....large sealed boxes for a flat response using minimal power or small sealed boxes for deep, hard hitting bass using moderate power. Around '92 a friend of mine had one Kicker C15 in a 4 cubic ft. box running off one RF Punch 45 amp.....VERY low, accurate, detailed bass from ANY music genre. Around 2003 I had two 12" Kicker CompVR's in a small sealed box (0.9 cubic ft. per side) stuffed with polyfil running off a Directed 1100d amp and could set off car alarms with ease! So yes you can get loud and boom with sealed boxes....just make sure you get a woofer that will work with the amount of airspace you have to work with.

I have a ported 8W7 and it drops HARD and DEEP. But then some songs I play, it lacks mid-bass. It's almost like I need two have both a ported and sealed subwoofer in my trunk at all times so I can enjoy all music. When I play music like Techmaster PEB or DJ Magic Mike's "Drop the bass", but speaker shakes the whole car. But many old songs from the 70's, it lacks. So it's just like the video said. It all depends on what kind of music that you listen to.

I've only ever built sealed boxes when I did my vehicle's or friend's as I loved that kick you in the chest bass, I also enjoy low rumbling bass at time's and I find sealed work's just fine for punchy bass that I like. I bought a custom made box for my sub's to see if it'd prefer it and I didn't mind it, however it didn't hit as hard when that punchy note hit like it did in sealed box. I've been debating for 2 week's now weather slot port or sealed going crazy, most say slot but only reason is louder and better bass sound, I'm going to go with sealed I think I'm just worried as I'm mounting my sub's inverted so magnets are out not sure how hard it is on them when pounded without a way for air to escape?

+Fox250R the type of music you listen to can help determine what type of box would suit your preferences best. Ported boxes can deliver deeper bass than sealed boxes and are generally preferred for music that produces hard-driving bass (like heavy metal, rap/hip-hop, reggae, etc.); A sealed box is best for any music that demands tight, accurate bass (like rock/classic rock, jazz, etc.). Hi Jamil! Choosing between a sealed or ported enclosure, will really be most dependent on the sound quality you're looking for. If you are looking for a deeper response, with a bit of a rumble, a ported enclosure would work best for you. If you prefer a bit more of a punch, and tighter response, a sealed enclosure would be the way to go. Many hatchback owners choose to go with a sealed enclosure, since the the space of the vehicle is smaller than most other vehicles, but it will really come down to personal preference.

I recently got a 12 inch Blaupunkt woofer having 264 watts RMS with Blaupunkt 2 channel 300 watts amp. The woofer gives an amazing bass as it is put in a sealed enclosure. The box dimenshions are around 15*14*13 inches having an approx 30 L of cubic space and i think it is quite small when it comes to high volumes. So when i get it to the higher volumes the woofer kind of suffocates. I tried to port the box but then i am losing the lower bass notes. So what if i go for a bigger sealed box? Shall i stuff it with polyfill, or keep the old box and upgrade it with polyfill?

  • @crutchfield

    @crutchfield

    6 жыл бұрын

Polyfill is used to trick a subwoofer into performing like its in a bigger box that is truly is. This helps when the subwoofer has been installed into a box that is smaller than its recommended size. Installing a subwoofer into a smaller than recommended box would make the bass seem even more like its suffocated. You definitely don't want to go that route. Now most subwoofers can work in a variety of sealed subwoofer box sizes. I think your best route is to find out what is the biggest sealed box that your subwoofer can work in, check to see if the box it was in met that, and if it didn't, get a bigger box. HTH! --Crutchfield

Few years late.... but i have a good reply for you. We used to fit car audio at my work and we moved away from it because it wasnt working for us with the publics new buying habits of internet shopping, ebay, secondhand selling sites etc and then theyd watch a yt vid for how fit it. 1990 - 2005 was great but audio business at the lower end slowly dwindled away. It got to the point where they would walk in with their own kit and the minute you mentioned more than $30 fitting charge they would look at you like youre ripping them off and walk out. However.... One shop across town that only supplies high end has still got a big following and they only specialise in big custom builds. For instance they had a nissan gtr in with someone spending approx $3000 on it and after that was completed they had an M5 in with someone spending $2500. They consistently run like this, although obviously the jobs take days rather than hours to complete. We dont have the time or staffing to go to this level, but tbh we didnt want to as it would have drastically changed how we work. We went down a different route away from audio which works well for us. if we had took a gamble on going high end it would have been tears if it hadnt worked and wed be left with a lot of dead stock to shift + extra wages to pay, especially with having a big competitior in said company mentioned above. High level Car audio fitting is becoming a dying art sadly. Hope this helps

A sealed box that is too small will reduce the amount of low end bass that is produced. A larger box may be able to play lower but at the cost of power handling. Polyfill absorbs and slows the sound waves to make the sub behave like it is in a larger enclosure as stated above. You can get a cheapo pillow and take the poly fill out of it if you only need a small amount.

What the real truth on ported versus sealed is, the Efficiency Bandwidth Product of the Woofer. Get the Resonance frequency of the Woofer, divide it by the Electrical Q ( Qes). If the answer is less than 50, do not port it. If the answer is 100 or higher, you Must port it. It has to do with larger size magnets and voice coils having a Damping effect on the woofer below 100Hz.

Don't believe JL and other audio manufacture when they say this sub is best in a X cubic feet box (sealed or ported) always go bigger than what they say. The reason they say smaller box is purely for business reasons, smaller boxes can fit into more cars, take up less space and therefore apeal to a wider market which means more sales. The truth is you need to be bigger. Take the 12w6v3 for example Jl say 1cuft Sealed, i say 1.5 minimum. Jl say 1.3 ported, i say 2 minimum.

Generally speaking, most "electric bass" music fans would probably prefer the bass response of a ported box more than a sealed box. That said, much like the old saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," good sound is in the ear of the listener. In other words, everyone hears things differently; and your own preferences may be different than others who listen to similar music. The best way to determine what suits your bass preferences is to listen on your own. Hope that helps! --Crutchfield

Hola Fernando!

You can get more bass output from the same wattage with a ported box, this is true! Which do you prefer for your setup? Ported?

@@crutchfield Ported because i don't have the budget for a sealed box and amp that would match the output of a cheap ported setup . I rather save money for other things . And I mostly listen to hiphop so i think that for me ported is the way to go imo .

Sealed is more for sound quality with little bass while a Ported box that's tune will be booming Bandpass boxes are for the competitors with big overpriced expensive Subwoofers and amps pushing over 150db of SPL it's basically ground thumping pounding bass.

Ported is garbage, sealed is best sounding
