    I purchased a custom design from Mark at CAF for a JL 8W7AE. I was surprised by how responsive he and or his team was. They worked with me based on how I would be using the sub, the car it was going in, firing position, and most importantly the type of music I listen to to come up with the correct tuning. I’ve built enclosures in the past but they were not very sophisticated and were in fact exactly how Mark explains them here. Based on the “required” specs. The designs I received from CAF were very detailed but easy to understand. I will say though that you could build an enclosure with simple tools. Jig and circular saws come to mind. But there really is a difference in the finished product if you can swing the purchase of or if you have a table saw and router. Back to CAF design ... the custom enclosure sounds GREAT. And for those on the fence about an 8” sub, don’t be. In this case the JL paired with the custom enclosure by CAF, performs better than I could have imagined. Seriously!

    I learned the hard way with tuned frequency vs airspace (I had only been using enclosure dimension / port size calculators, not acoustic enclosure modelling software). Turned out that the recommended airspace for each of my subs was for a 45Hz-tuned enclosure, and that double that airspace per sub is required for 30Hz. So initially with 4 subs in my enclosure I thought it was quite inefficient on the lows. Indeed, I put it into the software and the F3 was 40Hz. I replaced 2 of the 4 subs in each enclosure with blanking plates and now I have an F3 of 27Hz and it drops proper low!!! Of course, there is now also double the port area per sub with half the amount of subs in each box, so there is no longer any port noise either :)

    It was good to point out that the volumes are recommended starting points. I built a dual ported 15" box where the port volume and area were correct, but the actual passage for the air was so narrow and wide that the ports didn't flow well at all. Inefficient ports made the box somewhere in between ported and sealed and the internal air volume all wrong.

    There could never be enough of these types of helpful videos. Some think get this brand that brand don’t get this brand that brand of equipment that maybe true in some cases but it always comes down the the nitty gritty details. As for me I like Brazilian amps XSpower power batts dual or more runs of power and ground I use U.S Alternators and custom made subs and I build my own boxes. But it’s lots of learning and trial and error no one is perfect. My goal now going to use custom made subs on Solo X 18 motors is a true 28-19hz tune using every square foot of trunk space to where it’s going to be a blow thru but not a band pass almost a 6th order I guess using my trunk as an enclosure with the port facing my cab. 97 Gmarquis the trunk is 19 cubic feet only 15-16 of it is feasible to take over with an enclosure Then minus all the stuff we learned here leaves me with about 13 cubes for the box and 3-4 cubs for port-ruff estimate of course. Going Burch to try to save weight freakn 100 pound motors and there going to be two :)

    I have a 2019 new body style RAM 1500 Laramie Crew cab I'd like to make an under-seat enclosure for. I am an amateur carpenter and could fabricate what I would need for the space easily but am clueless as to all things car audio. Would I just make as big of a long thin and flat (to fit under the seat) box as I could and then figure out volume after and get the appropriate sub speaker? Should I just have a cut out with enough clearance for the sub on top? How much room do I need between the bottom of the seat (if I do up-firing) and the face of the sub speaker? Are there any videos or instructions for starting from scratch on a build like this?

    This is how it was done for years. Buy a speaker with a grille and it can contact the seat. You may look up prefab boxes for your truck to get an estimate of your final airspace.

    Great video! Just liked and subscribed :). I never knew that the port volume was not considered part of the total airspace! I was about ready to shove 2 basketballs into my subwoofer box to take up the "extra" .5ft3 of airspace i thought I didn't need. My subwoofer is "clacking" when I send full volume high bass music to it at max volume. Not sure if that's distortion of bluetooth signal * head unit distortion * mechanical distortion, or simply that the sub is over-extending due to too much airspace. So I backed down the subwoofer amp gains until it no longer clacks at full volume. But now i miss the "slam".

    So many of us have. For many years even high-end manufacturers didn’t publish it. Honestly, go to your modeling software and change the box size 0.06 cuft for an 8” woofer. It’s practically negligible in the ultimate results.

    If a prefab ported box has a port facing front like the subwoofer would it make any difference if the port was located in a different spot on the box? Or say round instead of rectangular? Also it's a 4 cubic ft box with 2 alpine type R 12s with Rockford power 1500bd. I get extremely good bass with rap and techno but I listen to more rock and metal and the bass just isn't there. Should I go with 2 individual sealed boxes at 1 cubic ft each 32hz?

    Look up resonant frequency cancellation. Also, if you have volume of stereo at 10, but noisy traffic at 4, you can only hear 6. If traffic goes down to noise of 1, then you can hear 9. That’s a 50% increase in PERCEIVED volume.

    You need to check and use a real program like winisd. Torres is only a tuning frequency calculator. Nothing else. It tells you nothing about the performance of the port or the predicted response. It literally only tells you a tuning frequency. With WinISD you can get an actual idea how the port will perform and if the vent mach speed is within an acceptable range.

    Funny you mention some manufacturers don't include subwoofer displacement ( for both sides ) in their specs . I have a set of FOCAL flax P25FE 12" subwoofer that only says volume and f3 in the spec sheet for sealed enclosure . They say .72 ft3 and f3=48hz for instance. I have assumed that they are talking about .72ft3 AIR VOLUME . Is this correct ? I know from your other videos you use focal speakers in your builds .

    It depends on the woofer, but in most cases even a 10% deviation will have little effect. What’s more important is checking the results of your assembled box before calculating actual desired port length. Look up Focal subs spec sheet and it can show the response graphs and corresponding box sizes to give you a better idea.

    I prefer them in separate chambers. Blowing a speaker isn’t always about proper design and setting. Sometimes it’s a QC issue and others it’s a material lifespan issue like how old rubber gets brittle. Finally, if you have a high-end setup, it also allows independent time alignment and tuning.

Without using the Manufactured spects.. which by the way can be up to 30% out of tolerance. Thiele and Small parameters...

    Mark, lol yeah I guess I should have stated that I already have the measurements for the car but between starting the box or buying the subwoofers. Okay, the dilemma is if I start the box for two 10” Subs with an overall size of L 4.6’x H 1.7’x D 1.2’ then the air volume might not be suitable for two 10” subs and would render the box useless. If I buy the subs, then the air volume (my understanding) would be the most important number to sound great and keep the subwoofers playing at peak performance for longevity. However this may change the whole design of my box plans as well to a point that I may have too little or too much air volume for the peak performance range of the subwoofers. Sure I can build a box and have a very good sounding system until I close the trunk and it sounds like a kid pressing his lips together trying to make bass sounds. Like an 87’ Cadillac with a beast system and no sound deadening treatment. 🤢

    Video idea: will a modern DSP (like the newer AudioControl units) allow you to compensate for a less-than-ideal box size? It'd be cool to see you build sealed three boxes for one sub: on box too small, one exactly what the manufacturer recommends, and one too large, then see if you can use DSP to make them all produce the same response on an RTA. I've wondered for a while if we could "cheat" like this with DSP to let us use a smaller-than-ideal box in vehicles where space is tight.

  • @jtmcfarland3512

    @jtmcfarland3512

    It depends how you define “compensate”. It’s also not a yes or no answer. There are some issues that can be addressed with a DSP, but others that are essentially set in stone.

  • @JesseOsby

    @JesseOsby

    @@jtmcfarland3512 By compensate I basically meant have the mis-sized box sound identical to the correct-sized box. I.e. the same frequency response, distortion, impulse response, etc.

  • @jtmcfarland3512

    @jtmcfarland3512

    Жыл бұрын

    @@JesseOsby Unfortunately, that doesn’t quite work. Today I noticed Mark has a newer video called “You’re using DSP wrong!” Where he briefly mentions box sizes. A more detailed explanation is that a box is essentially a part of the speaker (just like the wires and magnets). The air pressure created by the moving cone is like a spring, holding the cone in a happy medium when it tries to move. If there’s too much pressure, you’ll have to overpower the system, which can cause distortion and burned up amps/DSPs. If there’s too little pressure, you can send the cone flying out of the speaker, tear the spider, crack the voice coil, not to mention have a muddier sound because the speaker is now too floppy. A DSP cannot correct for a bad box. Edit: Even a ported box. Many people think it’s open to the outside, but in fact the air still has a calculated amount of inertia. Kind of like swinging a paddle through the open air; even though there’s only air on the other side, you can feel the resistance of it hitting the paddle.

    I've had so many headaches over trying to figure out enclosure sizes for my subwoofer. The data sheet for my old JBL driver uses that same ambiguous phrasing "includes driver and port displacements" and they don't include the driver displacement. In fact you might have even got that example from a JBL datasheet if I didn't know any better. What bugs me even more is that different manufacturers provide different TS parameters, either by giving them different names than standard, or just not putting them in at all. Not ideal when WinISD is asking for values and you have to decide whether not putting them in will affect the resulting enclusure design.
