(Haven't got through the video yet if it's mentioned) Fun fact: NOS is a brand and the mention of "I need NOS!" was a hilarious case of product placement. The next movie saw the characters adopt more accurate "street racer lingo" by saying "squeeze", "boost", or "spray". F&F movies from 4 onward replaced those terms with repeatedly saying "family" to make the car go faster.
In the first fast and furious movie, they weren't just stealing dvd players. They also stole TV/VCR combos! Those were gold back in the day.

If your not a car guy kudos to you on doing the research to get this right I have taught almost this same lesson about how nitrous works in a car countless times because of those movies

Kind of cool you mentioned C-W Scheele. He was an apothecary in my small hometown of Köping. We have a statue of him here and the building were he worked is still here today!
Your sense of humor is incredible and your work effort even more so. I appreciate everything I've seen you in.
I run water/methanol in my car. It is fantastic! I can run more boost and timing than I ever have. Added almost 100whp to my car. I did the tuning so I know just how unsafe I made it. Also... The "adult" stores near me sell cartridges and will give you balloons when you buy them.
One note. Funny cars were named such due to the cars having altered wheelbase sizing. Someone looked at the first funny car and said "that looks funny" because the spacing between front and rear axles were not the stock distance. Nothing to do with laughing gas. 15:25
Once while i was getting dental work done while quite young i was given too much nitrous. i only remember snippets of the experience but i remember feeling very disoriented and feeling not right in my head/body. next thing i know ive apparently thrown up while laying back in the dentists chair and the poor hygienists had to clean me up 😭. i was under 10 years old at the time and i have never allowed nitrous to be used on me ever again. that was the only time i've had that happen despite having nitrous other times with no issues. though i did notice not necessarily enjoying how it made my head feel any time i was given it. the dentist probably just gave me too much and it's safe for me, but it still freaks me out and i don't like how it makes me feel.

I had to have extensive dental work as a small child (still need more as an adult tbh) and have developed a dental phobia from it, because they weren't so patient with kids in the 80s and had probably never heard of sensory processing disorder. Was given nitrous at one point. Hated every second. I remember feeling like I was still about the same amount of anxious and just "locked in" so externalizing it felt like yelling from the bottom of a well. At least they listened to that distress and didn't keep trying to give it to me just because I was easier to handle on their end.

NOS is a brand name. Nitrous oxide is the gas used in nitrous kits made by companies like N.O.S., Nitrous Express, ZEX, etc. Had a few Mustangs that lived off of those bottles of joy. Thankfully it doesn't work anything like everyone sees in the movies.
It works like this: Go to Maryhofen and visit the Ski Bar. Watch as young Brits huff the NOS like it's an oxygen tank and they are scuba diving. Then watch as these young Brits crash by the dozens and overwhelm medical worker. That is my experience with the stuff.
That Devo joke made me laugh out loud
It makes my heart happy as a car enthusiast to hear humans are using the same method of having a guy open a bottle of NOS to send a rocket into space as I did sending piston 2 into low earth orbit
About 30 yrs ago my friends and i were "doing whipits" or huffing NOS and I offered my alcohol-only mother. I told her what it was, but she heard "helium filled balloon" and took a deep pull, i told her to hold it in, but she heard, "say words" instead of munchkinland, her voice went "swing low". Of course she laughed at that right as the NOS hit her brain which made her laugh while having a lowkey terrified look on her face. It was the 80's so she just labeled us crazy after she came back to earth 20 secs later.
14:22 the iconic SpaceX phrase was used. "Proceeded to undergo a rapid, unscheduled disassembly."
in 1967 a friend had a 59 chevy with a 409 and a nitrous bottle in the trunk
Excellent video!
I've used NOS for years in my Mustang drag car. Not great for ET racing due to consistency issues but great for Friday Nite runs pushing low ET's.
one really important factor in the use of a nitrous compound to aid combustion is the mere presence of unpaired nitrogen. you see while the part everyone talks about is the increase oxygen delivery, the most energetic part of such a reaction is usually the nitrogen atoms reacting with each other to make nitrogen molecules.
@wagnerrp
Ай бұрын
Nitrogen loves itself, and loves to be bonded to itself. In the case of nitrous oxide, it's already bonded directly to itself with at least a double bond, so there's not a tremendous amount of energy left to be gained. The single-bonded hydrazine decomposes to 400K hotter than the double-bonded nitrous, and even monopropellant hydrazine is considered an inefficient propellant if not fed into secondary combustion with a separate oxidizer.
Thank you! I have been arguing for years that fast and furious was bad copy of Point Break!
I participated in a mountain bike race at the Deer Park facility. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message.
When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, when I was 15, they gave me NOS...... it did not affect me at all. Smelt a bit like pine, but that's about it. Both the Dr. and staff have never seen someone not affected when given NOS.
"Mission: Impossible soaked in Axe body spray." We refer to Axe as "Icy Fuck Boi" in our house, so yeah, he's not wrong.
I used to get NO at the dentist. He still gave me novacaine shots, but it did work better than novacaine shots alone. I never laughed, but I did feel strange. When I was in my late teens and early 20s people would sometimes have a nitrous oxide tank in a room with a bunch of old mattress on the floor. It was a large tank (about 4 ft tall and 10 inches in diameter) and you would fill up large balloons from it, then inhale it. After 2 or 3 balloons full you got pretty disoriented, so the mattresses were a good idea. Of course we were also drinking and smoking weed, and some were doing other drugs as well.😅
As a power adder great bang for buck getting faster 1/8 and 1/4 miles times for decades. In addition instead of just a secondary fuel pump you can run a complete second fuel system with small 5-8 gallon fuel cell for safety and redundancy. If the main fuel system has any failure the additional fuel need for the nitrous oxide will be supplied preventing lean detonation and melting pistons.
Apart from the b12 deficiency, erowid did a comparison of the various grades of NOS, using a humble piece of filter paper. Auto grade left a horrendous film on the paper. Food grade left a less worse film but it was still there. Medical grade was fine.
Please do grand coulee dam in Washington USA for megaprojects next.

The term "funny car" refers to the wheelbase changes that were made to the cars to move the weight rearward. It made the cars look "funny". This was pioneered by the Ramchargers in 1964. The first funny cars use super chargers and nitromethane and not nitrous oxide. So the funny car term had nothing to do with nitrous oxide.
So that's why they are called funny cars!! Best fact i've heard for ages!

Thanks internet, now I want to make a race car with N2O rockets made with shredded tires. Of course have N2O on the engine for lower speeds and a nozzle on the dash too.😂
I wouldn't use NOS in your car. Just clean your engine, is what I recommend. I use Seafoam High Mileage in the gas/petrol and the oil. It removes the carbon with Naphtha, heats up the engine with Isopropyl Alcohol, and lubricates with Pale Oil. If your engine is more runs more efficient under normal conditions, there's no reason to have to boost performance.

Not first but definitely the closest I’ve been ❤
Anyone who knows anything about cars (obviously not the movie writers) knows that NOS is not pronounced as a word. It’s N-O-S. Spelled out. Its also not a short-form for nitrous oxide, it stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems and it’s a company that makes nitrous kits
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) Go baby go! 🚁 ⬅️ 🚗 ⬅️ 🚓 🚓🚓 🚓

Aghh. Simon I love your videos but please don't refer to it as "Naws". N.O.S. is a brand of Nitrous kits but there are so many more popular ones, Nitrous Outlet, Zex, Nitrous Express, etc. At the track we commonly call it "spray", "juice", "smack", or refer to a car as being "on the bottle". That being said, keep up the great work!
@MichaelWinter-ss6lx
Ай бұрын
Simply call it NOX.
Rant alert! "NOS" is the abbreviation for a company selling nitrous oxide injection kits, Nitrous Oxide Systems. NOS is not an abbreviation for nitrous oxide. FWIW, I started using N20 in the early 80s. Blew up the first engine impressively. - Chief Pedant
Its an oxidizer. It makes gasoline burn hotter
That's not why they were called funny cars. Funny cars are called that because racers used to move the front wheels forward and modified the chassis to have the cars angle down in the front. It was to get better a launch so you didn't have to use wheelie bars. It saves weight and helps the car be more stable at high speeds. It made them look "funny".
They were VHS players not DVD players... Yes the franchise is that old
A special tool called a cracker? Ive never seen such a thing* Nitrous used to be everywhere cause it was in a bit of a grey area, so for a time clubs would literally sell you balloons before they clamped down on it. (I think because some idiot huffed it through a mask and suffocated.) Almost universally you just use the same cream dispenser without the cream, it literally comes with a nozzle on it that fits a balloon... *Well, maybe I have, one guy I saw had a smaller more direct nozzle, maybe that was a 'cracker' it was terrible though. Kept freezing up and releasing the gas everywhere but the balloon.
