I remember hearing from Ben Foster that the opposite corner to the foot is the most comfortable place to bury a penalty. And since most players are right footed, this explains why the bottom left had the highest %.

Nope. Elite pk shooters like Lewi, Kane, and C.Ronaldo, just to name a few have specific ways to position their bodies, time the run-in with the shot and look at the keeper for a split second before actually taking the shot. Maybe in amateur leagues or lower pro divisions its more random, but the best takers consistently score from the pk spot.

Well I remember watching Match of the Day in 2016 in December and arsenal played Burnley at home Sanchez scored a last minute pen to win it going down the middle and at the end of a game Danny Murphy said after the game that from a PK kick keepers want to be the hero and are more likely to dive so that success rate doesn’t shock me.

He also often went down the middle, remember Chile winning American Cup, often used the chip. Its less about gk looking like a hero, its more about not looking scared or lazy, if you don't dive, so they will most of the time, that's what made it statistically better to shoot down the middle, however kickerswere also scared of looking lazy if they go down the missile as you have to score off you do. But i think they caught into that, &recently even gk may have caught onto the kickers now doing it, as they do sometimes stand still. There's plenty his on it, though idk if any are new, i know qi had an episode with it, where sandy had already taken over from Stephen, but i already knew of it then so didn't listen properly

Kinda like in the World Cup Final where Martinez told Dybala (I think) to shoot down the middle if he saved the shot before him . This because in such an important game and in a very important penalty a keeper would look really dumb if they just stood in the middle so it’s more likely that they will dive to either side. Martinez saved the pen and dybala scored down the middle.
That's why on fifa i always go down the middle the first time. Not only are keepers typically diving left or right, but if it works the player starts to wonder if i even know how to aim a pk, usually resulting in them staying center when i then go bottom right.

I had two tricks that almost always worked. I was at one point (around 27-28) had more saves than goals in from penalties. It all depended on the player taking the penalty. If he was confident I always pretended to move but was still. Usually that was either a impossible shot to stop on one of the sides, a panenka attemt or middle high in the goal. I saved probably 20-30% of those. If he looked a bit nervous he will usually always target one of the sides. I pretended to move to my right, right before he shot. Nervous people usually saw a bit up on me a half second before the shot and then down on the ball to focus. I timed it usually correctly and dived with full commitment to the left. Most penalty takers were right footed and they usually picked the right side, (left for me). Most of the balls shot was loose and 90% or more went to that side. If it was a bit too close to the post I would not reach it, but if it was anything in between (as it usually was, I could save it) Though I had different tactics on penalty shootouts.

I've noticed while goalkeeping is always look at the kickers feet position because you will know which direction they will aim them in. Problem is you have to get there fast enough because you stared at the ball too long
Julian Dicks said (in the Peter Crouch podcast, I think) that he'd just hit the ball as hard as he could. If he didn't know where the ball was going, there is no way the goalkeeper could.
sliva def tried 2017 and 2022
Great video
I'd like the fact of which leg the kicker users to be factored in as well
High corner strikes are effectively impossible to save, though are far easier to miss. Basically pick a low corner or do a Datsuykian flip on the goalie
I go always for the top corner.
Though going down the middle is only successful because its rare. If everyone started aiming at the middle the save rate would obvs be very high
I didn’t know Lautaro Martínez got a new haircut (the taker in second 5 looks like him)
Gotta look at how many of those went over the goal tho. Because those were also always aimed at the top half. It's harder to hit.
Survivorship bias is one helluva drug.
People shoot low because they are worried of adding too much power or missing it
They changed rules so much that Keepers are not even allowed to move ahead of time to make save, and since the goalpost is too wide be covered within those few seconds, they are physically incapable of saving certain area of the post. Penalty is heavily shooter favored these days for this reason.

Add in the delays and technically-not-standing-still-but-completely-stopping run ups that are allowed AND refs being a lot more harsh on defenders running into the zone early even if you save, it has become a miracle or a huge mistake on the striker side, if any penalty doesn't go in.
while top corner goals are never (or rarely) saved, this doesnt account for the ones that go over the bar, which is a fair amount so keep that in mind
100% of penalties shot in the top right / left corners resulted in goals, but probably a far lower percentage of penalties *aimed* at those corners actually scored.

When i was playing football in a team ( teen-ager of course ) whenever got a penalty i was scoring in the middle and a little high. Never lost one 😊
I needed this a few hours ago 😢
I was a no. 1 penalty at my Sunday League team. As someone who is left footed going bottom right is the easiest but I switched it up most of the time. I'd say in Sunday League it's 75% nerves 10% how bad the condition of the penalty spot is and 15 % placement/luck of guessing. I had the luck of never missing a penalty (took like only 30-40 of them over like 5 seasons) but I can say it's not as easy as the pros make it look like.
Nothing beats smashing the ball to the top corner. Altho ot makes the pen taker is more likely to miss.

If you get it on target, the top corners are the best bet because the keeper will always dive one way or another and won’t be able to reach the top corners either way… I just don’t understand how professional footballers that are paid 100,000s £ a week can miss the target from a pen🤦🏻♂️

I remember reading a long time ago that if you hit the ball with pace into the top corners, it's physically impossible for the keepers to get there. Of course, you can also shoot it over the bar so that's why no one wants to risk it.

I've always thought that the best penalty would be down the middle. The keeper almost always jumps to a side, and have to commit before you strike the ball if they're going to block it, so they have to go based on your body language. Down the middle would be the least expected and therefore it would go in a very good percentage of the time, given that you fake well that you're going to a side. If you go to a side, there's a 50% chance more or less the keeper also goes to that side, and then it's a bit of luck and placement to determine whether or not it goes in. Almost always the odds are in your favor, but a center penalty being unexpected would mean that in key moments, it would be a good option to pull out as it'd probably have the highest percentage (not always, of course, if you always shot middle and a keeper caught on, then it also loses it's effect).
as a man who play in a rough ground,i see this as a absolute success
Bernardo Silva take notes
I mean theoretically if you kick can kick a ball 100 miles per hour into the top corner with 100% consistency, I would argue that's the best way to take a penalty and would probably be literally unsavable if you could go to each side.
Deffinitely Keeping this In Mind In Every Pen Shootout I Play In Fifa
The channel I actually NEED
There is study explain why keeper more likely not to choose stay in the middle, because we don't wanna look don't do anything. So the keeper just dive to the side than do "nothing" in the middle
“Just hoof it.” -Sean Dyche
Bottom right as close to the pole as possible. Never had it saved even if the keeper dives to that side.
it depends partly on mentality too
If you hit it above keepers waist towards a corner you'll nearly always score.
I wanna say it depends on the league or tier of football. In pro leagues, it’s rare for keepers to stay in the middle unless a player is known to go down the middle, however in non league football, or in the lower tiers goalkeepers usually stay on their line and jump towards the side someone shoots hoping they’ve placed it to close to the middle of the goal on either side. -I know my goalkeeper was actually really good at saving pens by kinda staying in place and with his long reach saving the ball. -imo I feel like he had a 40% save rate but remember this is like the lowest level of football in Canada for u17. But yeah it’s probably better to just stick it in a low corner hoping it’s also the keepers weak hand.
The problem about the 100% zone is handling the pressure, a slight fear you put it up wide that's why players goes for their comfortable zone
The only penalty i ever missed was high and left. Just over the 90. Went back to simply putting it in the net after that.
I Won In The Penalties With My Friends In 5-4 By Kicking In The Middle
Go high or go low but never middle because it is a good height for the keeper.
Good thing I always dive to the st bottom left huh
basically, it mostly depends on ur strong foot and the keeper. good keepers have been taught to pick a side but if the keeper is bad, they will rely on reactions or pray the ball goes in middle.other than that, how u like to strike the ball says alot too. most player like going to the opposite side of their strong leg as they can follow through across their standing foot. e.g. right footed player shooting left. however, some players including myself prefer to shoot on the same side that i aim, like shooting on the right with my right leg, as it feels more easy to follow with the direction of ur run up. basically, it depends on you
that one goal keeper who doesn't save any where but middle
I once tried to hit the top corner in a penalty once. I can still see the ball smoothly sailing above the bar. It was so funny but I tried not to laugh because I just lost first place for my class 😅
Them:The penalty depends on the situation, gk, penalty taker Goalkeeper: Prime Buffon Taker: Zidane Situation : World Cup Final And zizou still goes for a panenka😂
Keepers won't reach the top corners, it's almost impossible they have both the reflexes and leg strength to get to a well placed ball there.
Me casually waiting the ball to come and me:and thats how i became the best penalty catcher in my school
Coincidence how I'm seeing this after refusing to take a penalty for my team
That is why Martinez dived right 3/4 times in the wc final penalty shootout 😅
As my coach used to say: The top corner is always open
Took a lot of pens playing over the years, granted at amateur and very briefly semi pro level. But the truth is there is no "best" way. The right way is the way you set your mind to. Pick a spot and stick with it, be confident, don't rush and concentrate on getting a solid connection and controlling the elevation. Everyone can take a penalty you just need to believe in yourself
The ball always lands on Scott Sterling's face.
Aguero's panenka dragging down that avg.

Fuerte y al medio
I always chose the low left hand corner. Almost always that proved successful.
I always liked burying it in the same bottom corner rather than going cross. Always scored, weirdly
So ... what is the best way to take a penalty?
Pov it's was prime Petr Cech:💀
Worth highlighting that shooting in the top corners comes with a higher risk of missing the target, the stats only account for shots on target which is a bit misleading.
This data is skewed by the fact if you go low and miss a penalty it’s probably because the keeper saved it, but if you go high and miss it’s probably because you missed the goal, the 100% scoring rate for the top corners isn’t taking into account the players who went for the top corner and shot over or wide
Szoboszlai is the man of penalties. Look at his PK's.
En Uruguay decimos: fuerte y al medio
In FIFA, my boys always target the top right when taking the pen. Thru don't know I know this
Can you show the difference between left and right footed players please?
What about at the youth level?
I think to take a successful penalty kick, a player must have at least 2 from these 3 abilities 1. Aim 2. Power 3. Trick
The last one is what we call a Panenka
GKs are always told from young always dive, i took pens as a GK and would hit them hard up and high down the middle
and mac allister really had the balls to make a top corner penalty at the 99th minute against man utd which could be the match winning goal
I u can’t save those top corner penalties but they r rare and hard to pull off
"What's the best way to eat a pizza?" "most people order it"
Impossible to figure out, but it would be interesting to see not the place where balls reached the goal but rather where they are aimed. I suspect footballers shoot less in the top corners because they are afraid to miss. I think they would rather see their shot saved by the goalkeeper than missing themselves, even if the odds of scoring would be in their favour, because if missed it would be entirely their mistake.
Me as a goalkeeper likes to dive more often to the left than to the right or stay in the middle I don't know if it's because of my handedness or what but yeah I'm pretty bad on saving penalties becuase of my preference
me as a goalkeeper taking notes
I go for over their left shoulder, gets them every time
