What's The Best Way To Fix Timing Issues In Studio One?

Ғылым және технология

Studio One comes with a wide array of remarkable timing correction tools - Time-Stretching, Bend Markers, and Melodyne are just some of them. But which method is the best, and in what situation? Here's Gregor to tell you all about it.

    These videos are amazing. Thanks Gregor and Joe and PreSonus for putting these together. I started doing digital recording back in the '90s but never spent the time to learn all the tricks of the tools so what I always did was cut/paste the notes I wanted to fix into the spot I wanted them to be, which I suppose still works in some situations, but these methods have made editing at least 100x easier.

    Amazing techniques I never knew about, thank you for the lesson! (And I also want to congratulate/thank you for knowing how to properly use two cameras, i.e., turning and speaking directly into the second camera when the video switches to it, like you do at 7:20 for example. Maintains the warm feeling that you're still talking to me, not suddenly to someone else for some reason. Nicely done!)

    I work a fair bit with remixing older recordings with 'Natural' or 'Drifting' Tempo. I find that I have to 'Practise' each time because I don't quite remember every step, click, and order of operations when I come to do one of these tracks. I find the Presonus instructional videos invaluable as aides to memory for tricky stuff like that. 👍

    hi, i like protools's "tab to transition" a lot. everytime i use it, it always point the playhead to the "true" starting point of the transitions. so it's more precise. my main daw is studio one of course. but i hate to switch to protools just to edit my drums because it's more precise. and please make a feature so we can copy wrap point on one track to another, itu would be nice. thx

    Thanks for the video. My biggest use would be importing an audio track of an entire song and trying to get it to synch with the S1 grid. The automation tools are pretty useless when trying to map a live performance with a drift in the timing. Happens more around the end of song sections. Easiest way I've found is to manually insert bend markers at the start of each bar and then quantise the track. I split a section of the song when there is a lot of drift at the end of the section and try to bring it back to the grid or maybe change the time signature for a few beats. Takes about a half hour for a song which is okay.

    Great Video as always. My question though on this topic is around Layers on a multi mic drums kit. If I am recording a drummer with 10 mics on the kit, which are grouped and need to add a new layer, The new layer receives the same name across all 10 tracks. For example - Kick In becomes 1.2 but then the Snare layer is named Kick In 1.2 as well. Is there a way so each track keeps it proper name but just added a number at the end to identify it correctly?

    How about multi tracked drums ? Using just the snare & kick as the transients whilst keeping phase coherence in the rest of the kit?

  • @22jmike

    @22jmike

    Try to use analyze on kick and snare respectively and THEN group all drum tracks into edit group. You should now be able to adjust your drums to kick AND snare transients, whilst in phase and other drum transients will not affect the audio bend tool at all.

    I have Track one with someone talking. I then created a second track for the music to play underneath. I went and got a song (Planet Rock) which is a fast song but when I dragged it from an audio folder elsewhere on my computer, and applied it to the blank second track, the song is playing at a very slow tempo? Why is that? and what do I do to fix it?

    Need more tips on fitting old live MULTI-TRACK songs into the grid for the click. I find that even Melodyne doesn't get a recorded 'live' click accurate in some cases. I don't know why since the transients are obvious. The tips in this video are great for single tracks. You did another video on multi-tracks and melodyne, which is the process I normally follow, but sometimes it's still not getting everything. Is there way way to use Bend markers from a single track (live click) and have the stretching applied to ALL tracks? In other words, let's say you have 10 tracks of a live performance. They are all 'in sync' with one another, including a recorded 'click' that someone did after the fact or even during the performance. However, the performance has drifts in it. You apply Melodyne to the live click track since it's the best transients. Copy points to tempo track, then bounce to the rest of the tracks etc. The result is still not entirely on the beat throughout the song. It appears that the only course of action at this point is to use the tips covered in this video to fix each track one by one. Am I missing something?

    Thanks for the tip, but this is not appliable to large audio files. Is there a way to fix timing in 5-6 minutes long record? And what to do if I want to change 2/4 signature to 6/8? Audio track length and timing won't change in this case

    One thing is hard for me to understand - what should be aligned to the grid? Is it a transient peak itself, or is it the beginning of a sound, zero crossing? Studio one alignes a transient peak to the grid if I press Q, but it is hard to detect peaks on basses and strum guitars, so I can't align them between each other accurately
