Thanks for this. Sadly, you are confirming that when one sounds not so good…… probably can’t blame the microphone. 😢 Even the iPhone 11 mic sounds OK.

I suppose that’s true, the mic doesn’t lie. But, the more accurate feedback you are able to get, the more you can find things to improve and work on them!

I use an MXL ribbon mic. Definitely does the best job of sounding like the trumpet I hear in the room, compared to other things I’ve tried. Apparently ribbon mics can be sensitive to being knocked around, so maybe not the best choice for a set-up to drag around to practice rooms.

That’s a good point too, for the students that may not be practicing in the same spot each day like I am

Great video and superb playing! I would like more information….like how far away from the mic your bell was! And what was the size of the room you recorded in. And was it dead or did the room have some natural reverb. I once recorded in my friends “ train room” basically a very large room (practically a barn)at 7000 feet above sea level with the bell a good distance from the mic. I recorded with Sony mini disk and a cheap Sony mic. It came out surprisingly well. Next time if you play jazz it would be fun to hear what to get with a Harmon mute with stem out and a tight cup mute sound.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Here's more of the information you asked for! My mic was about 1-2 feet from my bell and a foot or so higher than my bell My office is a typical bedroom size - maybe 12x12? It's pretty dead in here Hope this helps!

@@RyanBeachtrumpet hearing you play your c scale made me think maybe I need to practice the major scales. I do minor and major pentatonic, blues, whole tone and half diminished often. And in a former life had studied with all the greats in Chicago and did win a spot in The Civic Orchestra of Chicago and played extra trumpet with the CSO for 10 years and am on Grammy winning concerts and recordings. But now my migraines really reduces the amount of I can do….good because I don’t play professionally anymore. But hearing you play a fine scale and the stuff I used to do….. was inspiring. I always played jazz and just will be happy to explore the be bop and hard bop and the great American song book. Good luck in your music career!

Nothing will replace a good mic/interface combo. However, the convenience of the Shure phone mic could be useful for musicians who produce a high volume of low/medium effort clips for social media seeing as the audio quality is about 90% of the way there. The default iPhone mic was definitely better than expected but still nowhere close to an accurate representation of nuanced playing.

I think we are in 100% agreement. I think the shure is the best choice for people wanting basic feedback or to post on social media. The top reason I like an interface isn’t actually the sound. It’s having the ability to use a DAW like Logic Pro. It makes the process of capturing recordings and listening back faster. The good sound quality is a nice bonus!

I may have missed it in the video, where we're the microphones placed in relation to you/ the bell? I noticed a difference between the mics, but the difference wasnt as striking as I would have thought!

The microphones were a foot or so from my bell. So, pretty close. I wanted to replicate what someone might do in a practice room. I agree, the difference wasn’t significant. Still, I think for most people who want an accurate representation, spending some money on the shure microphone is a good idea.

@@RyanBeachtrumpet absolutely! I think it follows the same idea of diminishing returns with a lot of gear. I'd be happy using any of them, but definitely wouldn't want a CD recorded with an iPhone

The Iphone obviously sounds worse. I don’t hear much difference between the other two, though (I think) I’d like to hear myself recorded with the Shure.

I agree. It’s not a massive difference. With EQ, I think the ribbon mic would start to separate itself more. But, that’s something I need to learn about.
