The Case...
This instrument comes in its original Generation 3 Chainsaw case with blue interior. The outside shows some storage wear / scuffs, but all 3 metal latches are functioning and the Gibson name plate is still attached.
The Guitar!
3 piece maple top, Mahogany body and 60s styled Maple neck. 10lbs 5oz
Here is a really nice one for a collector. This Les Paul Custom has all the 80s Bells and Whistles. This means,
1) Flip Out, Winding Crank Tuners
2) Diamond Posi-Lock Strap Buttons
3) Tim Shaw PAFs
4) Top Adjust Bridge
... the only special part this one is missing, are the stickers on the pickup rings.
This example is in exceptionally clean condition. It does have some picking/polishing scratches (especially on pickguard and back) but the gold hardware is in awesome shape. There is very little wear to it's original luster.
The Lacquer has aged to a slight yellow hue, but the binding is still a nice white color. Along the neck and around the headstock's binding, you can see the typical lacquer line where the binding truly ends and the wood beings. This has caused finished checking lines. The guitar is break, crack and repair free though.
Conclusion
This is a nice example of an 80s Les Paul Custom in a desirable aged white finish. These don't last long around here - especially in this shape!

It's a truly amazing playing and sounding instrument. Your video on that weird bridge educated me on what my 335 had on it (great info!) I've always loved the white customs and that si one fine instrument you have (darn, it's already sold!) Merry Christmas from another bro from Ohio!

You know what I would absolutely LOVE to watch you review? One of these late 70's Greco EG 600/800 ones. So many people are saying that they can easily compete with the Norlin Les Paul Customs. I own of of these Grecos and l agree. But since you've had so many Gibson ones in your repertoire I thought you should know best. Best wishes from Austria! ✌️

The '78-'84 Greco, Tokai, etc were better than the Gibson's of that era. The Norlin era Gibson's have better pickups & a more traditional nitro finish but the Japan guitars used much better quality wood & had a much higher quality of construction (closer to 50's spec). Buying a good lawsuit era copy & replacing the hardware & in some cases the electronics gets you an instrument on par or better than the custom shop.

I have an 83 SG Standard which has a maple three piece neck, top adjust bridge and diamond strap buttons. The bridge in your video is a 3 point adjustable and not a top adjust. The top adjust adjusts the intonation from the top. The Top Adjust design was used towards the end of 1982 and discontinued by the end of 1983. A long time employee designed it for Gibson. I bought an extra one on Reverb as a spare just for the saddles since you can't buy them.

It has the same features as this - three piece maple neck, three piece top, shallow headstock, no volute…and weighs a tonne. Seems that the first changes were cosmetic and then they ?gradually? made structural and materiel changes as the year progressed. Other than the finish, the big difference between mine and this is that mine has a Kahler. Darn…

Aha! So the SG I bought from you DID have a case!! lol... It's good to see you back to doing the sound demo's Mike is good and should be used as a treat once in awhile but we don't call ourselves Mikeodytes now do we?? OMG dude, that is one gorgeous guitar. Ever since I purchased that white studio from you I have found myself more in love with that finish. If there are any inventors in the group I have an idea for something might make someone rich. Come up with something, chemical, light, tool , that can easily lift off the original nitro clear coat on a Gibson without touching, effecting or hurting the original color underneath. I think if something could be had to do this a lot of guitarists would buy it! Yeah yeah "it's got the cool Gibson yellowing going on", pfft poppycock and hogwash!! Remember that new futura flying V thing you ordered in Purple but it looks black, I think those were the two colors anyway? Yeah you wanted a purple guitar and a guy wanting a white guitar wants a white guitar darnit!! Even though I love the white one I got from you Austin I wish it was still white lol. When I took off that God awful black and silver on that SG I bought from you, the one in this video in ITS CASE!! lol, by the time I got to the original white man was it pretty!! I really tried to only take it to that stage but alas I could not so the whole thing was sanded down to bare wood and is now cherry red, per customer request other wise it was going back to white lol. If you can Austin, what was the selling price of this beauty?

I bought my 1982 LPC in Heritage Cherry Sunburst in 1983 for $500 new from a guy who's uncle worked for a distributor and gave it to him. The best thing I ever did was remove and sell those nasty Tim Shaw pickups. I got $450 for them on eBay (2008) and put in '57 Classics. So basically I have a 1982 dream machine for $340 -added a TP-6 and strap locks. (kept the old parts) I LOVE it now. I hated the Shaws, sorry, but it was a one-trick pony that is now a tone-dripping beast. The only problem with these guitars is that the high E string will slip off the edge of the neck if you are mindful. It was my first real Les Paul that I have loved and played for 37 years. The finish is amazingly durable and resilient.

I have an 82 LPC that was originally heritage cherry sunburst but was eventually refinished the off white like the one you have here. Why the refinish? To cover the maple patch for the Kahler trem I stupidly had installed in 89. Mine was made before the weight relief and is almost 12 pounds. Its a load. I have the crank tuners safely in storage. It wears gold Grovers now. I never understood all the rage over Shaws. They always just sounded "meh" to me. I first replaced them with Duncan 59's but have been using a Burstbucker 1 & 2 setup the last 6 years. The BB's sound fantastic and wear the original covers that were on the Shaws. IMHO I thought the T-Top PAFS were a better sounding pickup. I have them in a few guitars. The necks on these are outstanding. The 3 piece maple/no volute setup is ridiculously stable and the Ebony fretboard is gorgeous. The profile is perfect. I've owned it since 86. It was new when purchased from Cintioli's Music in Philly. It sat there for four years because it was so bloody heavy. It's a very special guitar.

I don’t know why all companies don’t use the diamond button strap holders. They work so well and don’t cost more. I’m jealous, I have a white 1987 custom but nowhere near as clean as this one.

I have an 84 LP custom in white (now cream) that I bought for $400 in ~1988. I always thought the Shaw pickups were pretty thin and brittle sounding ... I put in Alnico II's around 1990-ish and never looked back. Sustain is 2x better w/ the Duncan pickups.

Detroit Rock City, perfect for this guitar! How much did this Les Paul Custom sell for (original sale page doesn't load from Reverb.com)? Question, Why do the 1985-1986 Les Paul Customs sell for so much more than the 1983-1984 models? I ask because I am trying to get an idea what my 1986 is worth!

Anybody else prefer a volute? I dunno, to me it's just a detail that really seems to complete the neck. I think (IIRC) I've got 3 guitars currently that feature a volute, and those that don't have it don't really bother me (I don't really notice when I'm playing it), per se, but I just like seeing it there on those that do.

I guess, also, it only *really* makes sense to me on my 3/3 headstocks -- none of my guitars featuring an inline 6 headstock configuration have volutes, and I sort of do think it would seem strange on them.

@@Adanski I’m not entirely convinced of this. I believe I got mine in about 1983/84, and I believe it is a 1981 model. In my case, I don’t think mine was ever nearly close to white. It was always a cream color, unless it faded in the two years I had it since it was built.

I have a 1984 les Paul custom alpine white. And I gotta tell you I have a love-hate relationship with it I love it because it’s gaining value, I hate it because it’s basically plays like a cinderblock. At least from my perspective. it doesn’t have a maple cap it’s all mahogany and it appears to be a sandwich instruction. It’s just not very resonant nor has it ever been. I can tell you that the Ebony fretboard is very nice. I hope is over the next 10 years or so it’ll appreciate in value. But there are many les Paul’s that I have or played that are better much better than what I have.

I have an 87 white custom. I like it but yeah, it isn’t my cup of tea. It’s heavy and muddier than I’d like. I’d much rather have a new reissue with less weight, slimmer neck and brighter. Maybe one with p90s.
