I'm just a civilian....but I have to agree with you for several reasons. First you mentioned that several candidates dropped after the first day of boot camp. These are individuals who at the end of the day discovered/made the choice that they were not cut out for the military? Without this gut check, when would the candidate make that choice--1 week, 2 weeks into training? This doesn't seem "fair" to me---the other candidates who may end up getting smoked along side this candidate, to the instructors who have to waste time and energy on somebody who can't hack it, and on the candidate themselves? Secondly---I thought the whole purpose of boot camp, beyond the breaking down and building back up of the individual into a soldier was to (as much as possible) was to simulate the stressors of combat situations? How does that 100 yard thing equate to what was in the Shark Attack? (I guess I've always been of the mentality of "rip the bandaid off?" Finally, will finish with a quote from a favorite of mine: "Boot camp is made as hard as possible; it’s not sadism; it’s surgery. The operation? Cut out anybody who can’t meet the MI’s standards." (Robert Heinlein, Starship Troopers)

I think the shark attack needs reinstated, but I also think it needs to changes. With so many videos of it online now and the amount of 'surviving the shark attack' content I think it's less of a culture shock than it used to be since it's so expected. Keep the shark attack mentality, but mix up how it's done.

I went through it in the early eighties and even after four years of high school ROTC when I thought that I absolutely knew what I was going to go through. I absolutely didn't. No matter how much I thought I could handle the stress that wasn't the important thing. The important thing was bringing you to your breaking point so that you know what it feels like and how to better prevent it in the future during stressful situations.

The new version doesn’t seem to be that different to be honest. I would imagine you’ll still get yelled at while doing the physical tasks, which means it’d still basically be shark attack, just not in your face and while you’re having to do things and not just standing there. I think people are apprehensive of change, which I get, but shark attack is just one small aspect of training. There’s articles with quotes from a CSM on the change.

I went to basic June-September this year at Fort Leonard Wood, and we kind of had a shark attack. It wasn't when we initially got to basic, but the first day after our quarantine phase. They had us all get in formation in the PT bubble, then all the drill sergeants ran in screaming at everyone, made people do pushups, get in the front leaning rest, etc. It probably lasted like..20-30 minutes? I honestly don't remember lol But we didn't do this new 100 yards thing, it was just a modified shark attack that was still stressful, but not as bad as they seem like they used to be.

Hey Matt, I made it to the end of the video! I've never been in any branch of the military, but I've watched a lot of your videos and I'm fascinated by your experiences and the insight that you bring. Several of my friends and family members have been in all different branches of the US military, and it's great being able to learn more about their journeys from a new perspective. I've had a few thoughts about the shark attack vs. first 100 yards. I'd like to play devil's advocate for the first 100 yards a little, just for food for thought. Obviously my perspective is that of someone who hasn't been through BCT, but as someone who is considering whether or not they would potentially choose to do so, so if you or anyone else reading this feel that me not having been in the military disqualifies me from doing so, that's fine. The closest thing I ever did to military training was seven years of martial arts throughout my childhood. Some aspects of it were similar: we had a rank system and had rules for how to address those who outranked us, always using "sir" or "ma'am", etc., we had the creed, we had standards of behavior, formations... But one big difference was, our seniors also addressed us as "sir" or "ma'am", and it was important that the respect flowed both ways at all times. We respected them for their seniority over us and the skill that they had spent lots of time and dedication to hone. They respected us for our dedication to continue learning at every opportunity and our hard work. And when the time came that we had learned and grown enough that we were teaching others, we were expected to show them the same respect as we were shown. When I see videos of the shark attack, I think a lot of it comes across as yelling for the sake of yelling. The way you describe it as "making you transition from a civilian mindset to a soldier mindset very quickly" makes a lot of sense, but it also seems like it's more of a "scared straight" approach, making people fear getting punished and intentionally confusing them in an attempt to make them screw up. When the draft was going on, and people who may not have chosen a military path were being forced to anyway, I can see the necessity of setting that tone right from the start. With the US military now being an all-volunteer force, however, I can kind of see the value of having your first experience upon getting off the bus being something more visibly constructive. From what I've seen of the first 100 yards, it looks like it's still pretty intense, just in different ways, and it seems like it sets up more of an atmosphere of, "Hey, we literally just arrived today, and look, we already achieved something together, we can do this!" rather than "It's us against the drill sergeants (in terms of trying to make sure you don't incur their wrath and get punished)." I can imagine that for some people, the first 100 yards might be too soft, and not instill enough discipline, as you suggested. However in others, I think they'd find it a lot more motivating than just having to endure getting yelled at. Respect for authority because you fear their wrath is never as strong as respect for authority because you genuinely feel like they're steering you right. When I watch videos of the shark attack, what I see subjectively is hazing. When I watch videos of the first 100 yards, I see a challenge that makes me want to achieve it. So I guess I fall into that second category of people, rather than the first. Again, just some thoughts that crossed my mind! Hope they don't seem silly. Thanks for all of the videos you've made and experiences you've shared with us!

Week 8 of Army Basic Training for 11 Charlie’s. every platoon carry’s 3 240s ,2 249s, 10-15 water containers, 2 base plates/canons/bipod (ie motor system), 9 MRE boxes, 6 block radios, 2 RM barriers and Friendship/Teamwork/Humility/Honor (one of the big ass logs) for about 250 meters. It’s a hundred yards from the busses to the area where we have the equipment then carry all of that down a trail to our bay and CTA area. Place it all back in the exact order you took it from in about 30 seconds. If not done in 30 seconds we must do 15 burpees and try again until we succeed or the next platoon arrives. If we succeed we get smoked until the company is done if we fail we get smoked until the company is done. Then we form back up, drills ask random privates questions about our occupation ie how far is a M4’s area effective range (800m). answer wrong and the platoon gets smoked, if right he asks the next guy and if he gets it wrong we do double. Rinse repeat until shower drills.

I just got back from Fort Benning and i promise you they havent really taken the instensity away. I ended up in a quarantine camp due to most of my squad bay testing positive for covid so they sent all 96 of us and the medical checks they did every morning there led them to find something that eventually resulted in my medical seperation. Im definitely re-enlisting with the proper waivers but covid has messed quite a bit up.

To anyone looking to be broken down to a mere body and then built into a fighter with immense resolution, discipline, and courage... Join the Marines. Seriously. Even coast guard training is more intense than this glorified boy scout training. Same level as Air Force training. I'm glad I made the right choice. Boot camp is supposed to be hell. It's hell for everyone. The difference is attitude. Take that incentive training and smoke sesh as a necessary part of the process to instil discipline into you. Inspire you to strive for perfection. You're representing your country when you put on that uniform. Strive for excellence.
