What's odd about the Odyssey?
Ойын-сауық
A guide to all the fun, features, tricks and history of a genuine vintage 1975 ARP Odyssey Mk1. It's duophonic, it re-triggers, it beats, it growls, it sings like a nightingale, and above all, it's very very pretty.

Arp Odyssey is one amazing synthesizer. I totally love its sound even more than the Moog’s. It is so raw, organic, punchy, cutting, mellow you name it. Probably the most versatile synth out there. And on top of it it’s a legend just as much as a Mini. Great demo and presentation. You can check out my Odyssey funk demos if you like👍Keep up the good work!
Your joy makes me feel joy.
This has been great in helping me understand the ODYSSEY. (I Recently bought the Behringer clone, which is very good) .The squishy buttons you mentioned: Left is pitch down, centre is mod and r is pitch up. They take a bit of getting used to!
I really really wish you become the standard review guy for all vintage and new synths/drum machines.

I love your personality and excitement, great video!
To answer your question as to what the three control buttons do on the in the later models. (I've got a Korg/Arp Odyssey.) First off, they're not actually buttons, but pressure switches/pads, that act as springed potentiometers the harder you push. The one to the left bends the pitch down, the one the right bends the pitch up, and the one in the middle is for vibrato. (And boy, they're hard to push on mine!)

nicely done, great fun to watch :-)
Thanks for doing this video. I've had my KARP Odyssey for 2 years now and although it's not the most used synth in my collection recently I've taken it with me whenever I'm away from my studio so I've been digging into how to use it better. You've shown me some more tricks to try so I'm very grateful. I've recently recorded a video of me creating a full instrumental just using the Odyssey, that I have to finish editing and then upload. Keep up the great work. This is a really informative video. Very much appreciated

Wow! He's got the toys. He's got an original Odyssey! Thank you for your demo!
If I had to get rid of all but one of my mono synths, I would keep the Odyssey (I know it's duophonic, but I'm not calling it a "duo-synth"). There's just nothing else like it, or quite as versatile in my opinion. Between the duophony, the wealth of modulation options and unusually competent sample & hold section, there's very little the Odyssey can't do if you know what you're doing. Also, the ARP oscillators have a really unique sound to them; they're brighter than a Moog, but not piercing. The sawtooth is still the creamiest sawtooth I've heard on a synth, and it only gets better when you run it through the 4075 filter.

Occasionally I crank my Odyssey up through a Marshall guitar amp. The aggression I can get from it is unreal! (Followed by the aggression from my family if they're in the house!)
The reissues sound great but, the originals have a beautiful chaos, noise and depth they don't have.

@@MisAnnThorpe in a lot of cases yes. I've noticed too, SMT and Through hole behave a little differently, My TH versions of the same circuits wavier more. surface mount is just more stable, and technically works a little better. But, I do agree, aging will change these alot
Great vid! I've got the KORG Remake. FYI - the three white buttons that replaced the pitch wheel are used to pitch bend down, vibrato, and pitch bend up!
You crack me up in such a great way. Recently purchased a Behringer and need help with this beast. I have been playing and programming synths since the early 1980s, but my BOdyssey has me baffled. Wrote this 4 minutes in and am tickled to catch the rest.

Thanks for the feedback! My new way of upsetting the neighbours is to do screaming leads on the Odyssey through a guitar amp. It's shrill and percussive, like a really sharp guitar!
To the bemusement of my family, I love a nap to a synth sequence, and tonight was no exception. The previous video ran out and yours came on after. As I was waking up, I'm thinking...since when did Chris Evans (DJ) get into synthesisers? 🤔 Looked at my phone and found it wasn't him at all, but you sound alike. Thankfully you are eminently more bearable and entertaining. Great video to wake to, even if it was confusing at first 😂
Great (and pretty) synth capable of lots of lovely sounds, and I want one. btw, I couldn't help noticing how much you sound like Chris Evans off of the radio

@@murderousmaths Thanks! BTW, the left pad is for pitch down and the right pad is for pitch up. Some prefer a pitch wheel, but I like those touch pads. The only thing I don't like about the Behringer is it's keybed. Maybe I have to replace the springs for stiffer ones.

The original Dr Who theme used old samples and tape loops for the sounds. Impossible to get exactly right on Synths!

@@murderousmaths There is an international jazz festival there at the moment. I am sure an odyssey would be looked on kindly there after Herbie Hancock gave it the seal of approval. Of course some of the purists would still look on it with disdain. Anyway great video again.
