"What's Not To Like About This?" | Julia Hartley-Brewer Agrees With Uniform Crackdown

Parents at Caldicot School in Monmouthshire are reported to be furious with a headteacher after up to 200 female school students we barred from attending lessons in a strict uniform crackdown.
Chairman of Campaign for Real Education Chris McGovern explains headteachers are there make the rules and take the decisions. He says: "If the parents don't like the rules, then they shouldn't be in the school; simple as that really."
Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer asks: "Why do so many parents think it's okay for their kids not to obey those rules? That's the bit I don't understand."

The kids are to blame. As we know, teens like to push-the-boundaries, Rules are made to be broken & what rules they were quite happy to follow & abide by in Yr. 7, in Yr. 9 they aren’t. My Granddaughter has just got her second detention of the week for wearing Black Trainer-socks instead of black ankle socks. She’s determined to win, saying what has the length of her socks got to do with her Education? Nothing of course, but it has everything to do with learning to follow Rules.

I've heard this argument so many times and all I want to say to that, is this. You can get clothes that are cheap, and look good. However, cheap uniforms stick out like a sore thumb. When it was non uniform day, at my school, you couldn't tell the rich kids from the poor kids, because Primark was cheap, everybody shopped there and everybody could afford to shop there. But with just one quick glance at a child's uniform, you could tell exactly which kids came from struggling families. So I, personally disagree with this point. Respectfully, of course.

At my Roman Catholic school in the 1960’s we girls had to wear skirts that covered our knees, every so often there would be a spot check and we had to kneel down on the floor and our skirts had to touch the floor to prove they covered our knees, if any girls skirt didn’t cover the knees they had to report to the headmistress the next day to be checked again. If they were still wearing a skirt that did not cover their knees they got the strap. We had to wear full school uniform, pleated skirt, white blouse, school tie and blazer, white ankle socks, black leather shoes (patent leather was not allowed) and a hideous beret. We had to wear the beret when travelling to school and going home, woe betide you if a teacher spotted you not wearing it. No Jewellery was allowed except a small crucifix. How times have changed, I see girls going to my old school in skirts that barely cover their bum, wearing make up, jewellery and even nose and eyebrow rings.

But there is also the issue of totally unfair and unrealistic demands by some schools that uniforms must be bought from very expensive official suppliers and have school logos. As a single mum struggling on a very low income, years ago when the basic uniform cost £200, (nearly 3 times my weekly income) I bought my boys almost identical, but VERY much cheaper, supermarket school clothes minus the logo and the school repeatedly told my boys off. They were getting free school meals, so they knew we were seriously short of cash. There was no school or parent based group making second hand clothes available. I always bought proper school shoes, often on credit card. But in one year alone, my son grew 4 inches. They humiliated my boys because of our poverty. Some schools are absolutely appalling in refusing to recognise how tough it is for some people just to survive. 😡

Brilliant headmaster, let him be in charge and decide what is best for his community. Uniforms need to be “uniform”, it’s not rocket science. Learning is the focus at school, not fashion and make-up. I hope he does not bend under pressure.

Don't these parents realise, these rules are necessary to enable children to have life skills in later life. The school my son went to was supervised on a daily morning practice to check they were wearing the correct uniform. Unlike alot of other schools he was permitted to wear a dark outer coat to keep him dry, in our ever damp and cold climate, not to mention the rain. There are also children who are unruly, and whatever parents tell them to do, they do the opposite. My heart goes out to these blameless parents!!!!

I am ‘old school’ and like you, Julia, I agree. They had sufficient warning, they do not have a leg to stand on! The whole point of a school uniform is that the pupils should be uniform and not stand out. Makeup should be a big no-no. Let the girls be proud of who they really are, not their madeup persona.

We've had several generations whose mothers (fathers when one is still around) try desperately to be friends instead of parents and nobody ever said "no" to them. This is the result. I was a secondary teacher for many years and I never believed in bad kids, just bad parents. Fashion clothes lead directly to bullying.

I give students a detention if they have rolled skirts, or trousers hanging low so underwater showing (yes that boys fashion is back!) Or rolled blazer sleeves, or shirt not tucked, or no tie. Literally every lesson line up my instructions are "blazers on, shirt tucked in, tie on blazer sleeves un rolled, skirts unrolled and trousers pulled up". As a form tutor I tell boys that in the morning they should put the shirt on and pull trousers up over top of shirt, rather than stuff shirt down trousers. And thar is not to mention checking shoes. A constant battle, even when thw school provides shoes or uniform either for day loan, or gives for families with financial difficulties. Parents ring and say the child "will not be borrowing uniform for X,y,z reason ". It is like a losing battle sometimes. And then shout at me for enforcing rules to which my stock response is "don't ask ne to get into trouble by breaking the rules".

The problem is most schools tell parents they have to get uniforms with the school logos on, can only get them from this certain places and they can be very expensive! I know because I work with girls who have kids in school! The only people who gain are those who get the uniforms paid for! Gone are the days of going to the likes of Woolworths or Asda and buying shirts, skirts, trousers etc that were generic and cheap!

I was a nightmare in school. Never had the correct uniform or shoes. Was always misbehaving and causing trouble. Now im older and have my own kids i understand why i was like that. I had no respect or pride in my school. I didnt feel positively connected to it in anyway. It was somewhere i was forced to go and didnt want to be. When i played golf as a kid i was the complete opposite! I respected the dress code and the rules. I took real pride in my appearance and really respected the club. That was because i felt apart of the club and i was truly proud to represent it and wear the badge. Schools are failing kids. They dont instil pride or passion into the kids. They dont instil confidence or self respect. Kids are bored at school and bored kids will always rebel and create their own entertainment even if its got a negative outcome for them.

Parents need to stop whining about useless things. Uniforms are there for a reason to keep everyone on an even par. Those struggling can’t afford to dress their children on expensive clothes every day are happy to put their children in uniforms and if they’re on benefits or low income they get help. The more wealthy parents who can afford all that expensive stuff, stop using your kids to flaunt it. I struggled to raise 7 children on my own as a single parent and many’s a time my boys would put plastic bags on their feet before putting their holy shoes on in winter. So seriously, stop griping about how you have to fall in with school policies and worry more about teaching your kids some respect for their teachers and headmasters/ headmistresses

There is a high school here in Sydney that the kids don’t have to wear uniforms, it was mostly the girls who were dressed up as if they were going out to a nightclub not to school. Some were wearing short dresses that they could barely walk let alone sit down, then the school got a new principal and he put a stop to that.

Blazers with the school badge embroidered on should be stopped. We were given a school badge before we moved up to secondary, to be stitched on by mum who did home economics. Back then we could tell the better off kids because their blazer was more like suit material, whereas those if us not so well off had blazers made from material more like a donkey jacket.

I was a science technician in a school for years. When we had strict heads all the pupils complied with the uniform rules which in turn lead to greater discipline in the school. The uniform had an equalizing effect on the pupils When we did own clothes days to raise money for charity (pupils gave a nominal amount, £1 for charity)some pupils would not turn up or wear their uniforms because they didn't have the modern trainers or whatever the latest clothing trend was.Various nasty comments by some pupils such as haven't you got the latest trainers or couldn't you afford the £1 etc.were often heard.

Discipline and orderliness is the start to education. First of all you start by the uniform and lack of makeup! These are children and should not be allowed to be sexualized by parents or indeed for the sport of perverts. Children always will push the boundaries, it is for the Head of the School to make sure the parents and children are aware of what are the rules and boundaries of acceptable uniform and make up to be used. Good on this Headmaster, enough of this 'I can wear what I like!' Tough, you don't like it, go elsewhere and fail in your education. Bravo to this Headmaster!
