    Does anyone else think the Alchemy ink bottle almost a dead ringer for the U.S's first manned space effort, known as the Mercury program? John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth 3 times in the Mercury-7. The biggest difference is the Mercury capsules didn't have a bubble sticking out of the heat shield, like the bubble sticking out the bottom of Alchemy bottle.

    There was a retro rocket pack held in the center of the Mercury heat shield with three straps. The retro pack had three solid rockets which each yielded 1,000 pounds of thrust for ten seconds. They were fired one at a time. Only two were needed for safe reentry. "Safe" being a relative term in space flight, particularly when your nav gear includes an Earth Path Indicator consisting of a miniature metal globe in a windup clockwork mechanism. Guts and science is a pretty neat combination.

    @@johnnyragadoo2414 Cool. So there was a “lump” on the back. As for the (lack of) navigation, I think they did well considering it was essentially an expensive tin can, compared with how far we’ve come. Hats off to them.

    I've had mine for a little over a week now. It is a fabulous pen and (IMO) lives up to the old piston fill sports. The fit and finish are excellent, the anodizing is nice and thick, threads are as smooth as anodized aluminum can be, and the piston operates smoothly. Has a pretty good ink capacity for a small pen, too, especially if you purge the air and fill it again. If they make one in stainless steel I'll be over the moon. Also, I think it would be nice if kaweco would make a ring that replaces the clip (as the finial can be screwed off) for those of us that might like to go without a clip. I use my kawecos more than my montblanc 149! Pretty good chance the new piston sport will edge out my 2k for my most used pen pretty quick here.

    I have to join the chorus of people who aren't fans of that Alchemy ink bottle. One of the best things about the 80ml Diamine inks is the no-nonsense squat, square bottle that wouldn't tip over in an earthquake. I don't want instability or cleverness in a bottle full of stuff that stains things. I continue to be fascinated by Ian Schon's pens and his Monoc nib, although I'm committed to trying one before buying. I hope to see a faceted full-size pen from him that can use a converter and has a clip/rollstop. Beautiful work. Do you guys know of the Monoc nib fits into anything that takes a Jowo #6?

    Agree on the Alchemy inks, too clever by half. And also - do we really need the waste of manufacturing disposable coasters for every ink purchased? And a fancy cap that doesn't seal well enough for transport, so we need an extra of those too...

    The only problem is that it leaves a small gap between the finial and cap when you do this. Hopefully kaweco will make a flush ring to keep the trim motif as well as keep a bit of spacing between the tip of the nib and cap when the pen is capped. The tolerance in there is really tight and there isn't much room for error if the nib isn't fully seated in the housing.

  • @NikeaTiber
    @NikeaTiber3 ай бұрын

    If you manage to get the blind cap of your piston sport stuck in the cap rest assured, the finial unscrews and you can use a chopstick or similar impliment to push it out of the cap.

    I would disagree on the friction fit clips. While they aren't as nice as the spring clip on a 2k or a roller clip on an Italian pen they keep the pen in place in a shirt pocket or if you tend to stash your pen in between buttons on the front.

    The plug/cap combo seems like a bit of a gimmick, but if they're shipping you a bottle that isn't stable on its own it only makes sense that they include something that'll allow you to safely fill from said bottle. This new Kaweco fountain pen with piston mechanism is a charming and coherent continuation of the Sport series. The design is an absolute success, but it has one flaw that surprises me. The dimensions of the new Kaweco are identical to those of the regular Sport model, with one exception: the section goes deeper into the cap. On the regular Sport model, it measures 3.7 cm, while on the Sport Piston, it measures 4.3 cm. For this reason, the fountain pen is 6 mm shorter. This inexplicable fact reduces writing comfort, giving the strange impression that something is wrong. That's very unfortunate...

I'm hoping the alchemy Pencil Grey 🩶 is available in UK , I also loved the lilac/ violet / purple Kaweco that was not released in UK but people are selling on eBay for £75+ , how much would it be to order from Goulet pens as a Plymouth, Devon England citizen? I really don't like the 2024 pearly peach released here in UK and probably everywhere, I still do not understand why the violet sport was not released everywhere. I love it! If not I want the piston filler + ink set. The worry is post and packing charges plus Vat added to Brit imports which can be extortionate if you bought goods worth over £135. 00. The alchemy inks would make it slightly more worthwhile but we also have restrictions on importing or flying in liquid amounts of more than 100 mls. Any advice would be appreciated 👍🏻💜🩶💜🩶

Gold is softer and more flexible than steel, but that doesn’t suit every need, nor do flexibility and softness correlate very well with writing performance. One would hope that pen makers who use gold nibs would help justify the higher price with superior tuning and quality control, but that doesn’t always seem to be the case.

The only nibs I've found that do that are made of alloys with a high gold content. I wouldn't use a stainless steel nib if you paid me to. They are stiff, scratchy, hard. We wait all this time for a piston filling Sport and it's just a captured converter that holds the same amount of ink? Is this true? Same capacity?

  • @karibean13

    @karibean13

    A blind cap doesn’t always indicate a captured converter, it just means they didn’t want the piston knob to ever turn while the pen is posted because posting is nearly universal with such a small pen. Regular Kaweco Sports can only take their mini-converters, which hold half or less than a standard international converter. I don’t know the exact capacity of the piston version, but you can tell just from looking in the ink window that it holds at least as much as a small international cartridge would, and possibly more. I’d check the Goulet listing for the exact stats.

    It is not a captured converter. It just has a blind cap to eliminate any snafus that might happen given most people will post the cap to get the pen to a comfortable writing length, and how the dimensions of a modern sport make the friction area for posting on the blind cap itself rather than the barrel like a v12 or v16 sport.

    I have been drooling about the Schon Monoc nib since its introduction perhaps 2 years ago at the Philadelphia Pen Show. Just the look of the nib is fascinating. I know it it a lot of money but I need to know if it is worth it. I also understand that the nib will do reverse writing as the top is machined to be an architect style nib. Can you confirm this? Also will it fit on any pen that uses a Jowo feed?

    I'm a little scared of that Alchemy bottle. I assumed at first that the hole in the coaster would be deep enough for the bottle to sit flat and be really locked in, but doesn't look like it. A coaster is kind of a neat idea in case you have accidental drips going down the side of the bottle. Edit to say I was nervous watching this because I placed an order yesterday and was hoping there wouldn't be anything I couldn't live without.

    In defense of Robert Oster's ink bottles: I have always interpreted their shape and plastic-ness (vs heavier glass) as being conducive to efficient shipping. I believe they are in Australia which means they are sending lots of inks via air courier. Their bottle design means they can fit a lot of ink in a crate and the bottles don't contribute as much weight as glass.

    Um, let me get it stright: so the Monoc nib is a meticulously designed and manufactured titanium 400$ nib that not only lacks any particular performance, but also doesn't have the signature flex of the titanium nibs, right?

  • @jamespicht1128

    @jamespicht1128

    3 ай бұрын

    Apparently so. But then, we often buy $200-300 gold nibs that don’t offer better performance than a well-tuned steel nib. And not everyone cares that much about flex, it seems. I think one would pay a premium for a Monoc nib for the same reason one would pay a premium for a particularly pretty nib or for precious resin: The desire for something well-crafted, distinctive, and in limited supply is endemic in the collecting world, not least in pen collecting. Great writers can be had for a hundred dollars; when we spend more, it’s not just about the writing experience or the cost of materials.
