Kaweco pens are certainly pleasing to use and carry. And for the folks who collect fountain pens, this is likely on the ‘must have’ list. But if one is not obsessive about one’s pen collection, the price of this Kaweco pen would cause me to look at other makes before parting with my $$$. It ain’t cheap. For instance, the Pilot Elite/95s is hard to overlook. IMHO, the Pilot model is easily more luxurious in appearance than is this Kaweco. It is a joy to hold, cap and uncap. And as you have pointed out in your review, the Elite/95s writes like a dream. It’s also available in 3 ( I think?) colours and it’s considerably less expensive. Again……just my perspective. Having offered all that, this new Kaweco is not hard to admire. Great review, as always.

Worth noting that you can totally eyedropper the regular sport. The thread section, and the unthreaded extension that goes into the barrel is long enough that you can seal it with something like vasiline. I carried one for a while like that and never had a leak.

Yeah, I've eyedroppered both my plastic Kaweco Sports; I only have to be careful of leaks when they get low on ink (something about the air pressure and temperature change where they're held, I think), so just opening it up and refilling it with the same ink before it gets dangerously low has been my strategy.

@YR7A Just a suggestion, but silicone grease will not damage a rubber o-ring (if installed in the pen), while petroleum jelly causes deterioration to rubber. The tiny containers or tubes of silicone grease last forever for the small amount required to use on threads or o-rings.😎

I’ve had mine for a couple of weeks and am really enjoying it. Immediately thought the matte finish felt lovely in the hand and the black and gold is very attractive. I have a medium nib and it’s super smooth and very juicy, which I like. Filling was fun and capacity suits me; I love Kawecos in general so there were not really any surprises with this pen. I love the round tin and while I didn’t need yet another Sport, I couldn’t resist and temptation got the better of me. I don’t regret it.

It’s great to see them bring this back after about 50 years! I do feel like it was a miss to not be able to disassemble the piston, but maybe there will be fewer warranty issues from people messing with the mechanism. Regarding ink capacity - seems appropriate and about the same as the Pelikan M200/400. I’m looking forward to Kaweco releasing demonstrator and brass versions.

I have one Kaweco Sport already. I never felt the need to buy a second one, let alone start a collection of them. It's a neat little pen, with the emphasis on the "little". As for the piston version, again, it's a nice little pen but not cheap. I would save that money to invest in a larger pen. But, that's what makes the fountain pen hobby great; to each their own.

I would also like to note here that there is also an inset o-ring in the pen body down at the end of where the nib/feed housing screws in. A sharp paperclip could damage it, and a cotton swab can definitely pull it out, which is how I found out that there is an o-ring down there. There is probably a gland down there that the o-ring fits into that it is difficult to set it back into; I suppose they use a tool at the factory to seat it in there. I got mine back in close enough, but not quite as the nib/feed housing now has enough friction in the pen body that I can't unscrew it using the nib and feed; no worries since I have no problem aligning friction fit nibs. The pen doesn't leak and inkflow hasn't been effected, so all is good but it is something to be aware of if you are impatient and don't like your inks to be watered down at all after filling (which I am guilty of).

This is a cool looking pen, I've seen other reviews and at least one has commented about the blind cap coming off in the cap. Yours is the first to suggest that it might be deliberate so one doesn't lose the blind cap. My Kaweco Sport in Mellow Blue was about my 12th fountain pen and my first impressions weren't positive. The plastic felt cheap and the fit of the cap when capped was "loose", you can wiggle it when tightened. However after some use I found the pen is a joy to write with and is very nice. If someone is looking for a good small pocket pen on a budget, they're probably your best bet.

I'm the same as you; it's just too thin, piston or not. It doesn't help that the grip is concave and the cap is quite wide in relation to the body as well, which makes the pen tilt forward in your hand a bit. To me that's always made it feel as if the pen is trying to slide out of my hand instead of just sitting in the crook of my thumb under its own mass.

Sure, it's a nice looking pen & there would be no more fooling around with cartridges or that joke of a converter. For now I have the Bronze, Ebonite, AL Ruby, and the Toyama Teal that I eyedroppered and swapped in a 1.1 mm stub. That's enough for now. Re: blind cap in the cap Maybe intentional, maybe not. Either way, if anyone is worried about the blind cap getting stuck in the pen cap the finial of the pen cap unscrews and the rest of the pen cap is a hollow tube, so you can push the blind cap back out if you manage to get it stuck in there somehow. Not sure if one of us got a fluke, but there is no cap liner inside my modern piston sport. If you are going to grease the piston with a sharpish object be careful as there is an o-ring that is down at the bottom of the nib/feed housing that you probably don't want to damage, or inadvertently remove with a cotton swab. Overall, it is a great little pen. I have really been enjoying mine. Definitely has more ink capacity than the vintage piston fill sports. Got mine with a double broad and it writes excellently. I probably still like my v16 a little bit more, but it has got a 14k stub and I'm a sucker for stub nibs. I hope they release one in stainless steel in the future, would alleviate any trepidation about inadvertent damage from my work environment. Just out of curiosity, when you weighed the pen dry/filled to determine capacity, did you purge the air out of the pen to get full capacity? I noticed that when I put the pen tip up 1/4th to 1/3rd the reservoir is air on a single- draw fill.

Is the inside a plastic sleeve all the way down inserted into the outer aluminum shell? That seems like the most likely way to build it because you don't want ink to contact the aluminum. I'm tossed on whether to buy this now and show my support for this lovely new design or to wait to see if they come out with a raw aluminum version with black trim in a year or so which would be my preferred color option. I was pretty close to ordering a raw aluminum sport before this one came out.

Great observation about removing the blind cap with the cap itself. I think I'll start doing that. In practice, I've found it helpful to un-post the pen with a tiny bit of clockwise torque. Not enough to actually turn anything, just enough to make sure there is no counterclockwise motion. Otherwise, the blind cap can end up loosened. Mine is medium and a very dependable glass-smooth writer. The piston sport is what I would call a philosophically perfect pen for shallow shirt pockets. Three AI generated thumbs up complete with multiple backward knuckles. It's that nice.

Thanks for the great review and demo. It’s a tempting pen. But the price…. Is it really worth € 175? You can have nearly 5 plastic ones for that. Or 2 aluminium or steel ones. So it’s stays tempting, but nothing more.

Honestly I wish they made a Kaweco Sport XL too. Something that took a full size converter and has a wider body. I have small hands but they're messed up from skateboarding in my youth and I'm professional keyboardist and piano teacher. Small pens are uncomfortable. Even my Jinhao 82 maxes out at about 5 minutes of writing time haha. I also feel like their aluminum Sports are overpriced 🤷🏻‍♂️ But hey it'll sell haha. I'll probably still get a standard Sport. Good review though!

So I have this pen and well my thoughts, you changed. So when I got it inked it up pulled off that back cap and it flew all over, swore I was going to loose it, was thinking that was a bad design, then I thought why would they twist off that cap when I had it posted and twisted. Which honestly how many times to I twist a posted cap. The you sit here really quickly and show me well maybe this is supposed to be this way so Yes the little cap doesn't fly all over. A I smacked myself in the forehead and went well yeah that's exactly what yours supposed to do. So now all my complains are gone and yeah that's a feature. Guess I wish they would have said that. However now it makes so much more sense.

I agree with others that the price is too high. I'm sure hardcore Kaweco fans would find it worth it, but it's not for me. I prefer the plastic Sports anyway. I know some people find them cheap, but the sound of aluminum on aluminum when capping and uncapping aluminum pens is unpleasant to me. I like the way anodized aluminum feels to the touch but hate that metallic sound. (I have no problem with Schon Dsgn aluminum pens, but they don't make that sound because of how they open and post.)

Yup it does. I even took the top cap off to remove the clip and took the cap liner out to have a look. Short black one with a thin oring. If yours doesn't reach out to the retailer you bought it from. Must have been missed during assembly. Have a look though as it's tough to see since it's short & black so blends in with the black anodized cap.

I had a bad experience early in my fountain pen fun with a perkeo. But this looks like maybe a good place to jump back into kaweco Off topic but I thought of something that might be right up your alley. I recently picked up a TWSBI vac 700 and the vac20 inkwell for it. It’s a really slick way to get a full fill. I would love to use it with my 823 as well but it looks like nobody makes any sort of converter for it. I know nothing about 3D printing so not sure if it’s a tough project. But after googling a bit I bet if someone did start offering a cap for the vac20 that was threaded for the 823 it would sell like hot cakes. Is 3D printing a threaded fitting like that difficult?

@@irvintepper5 Pros and cons for that too, it would greatly limit the types of pens that can be reviewed since most reviewers wouldn't be able to review expensive "grail" pens which would it make difficult to determine their value for those considering spending money. On the other hand, the price/value thing definitely needs to be mentioned - and not everyone does it. Doodlebud usually mentions the price, so it was a bit unusual not to hear it this time around. I think the Sports are overpriced to start out with (I own 3 plastic, two AL), but this one's definitely out of consideration due to price. I'd be happy to use it if given one, but for that money I'd consider other pens.

170€ for an aluminum Kaweco Sport because it has a piston ? I think this is outrageous..... this is a big no for me.... Kaweco original 250 is also aluminum, has a decent size, takes standard international converter or a long cartridge, has a #6 nib and maintains the Kaweco style at a reasonable price.

I still do not understand why they did not came out with this model years ago. Why making these types of pens is so blody expensive? It is just a stupid seringue which cost 2 dollars to produce in China. OK with improve materials to make it more durable how much will cost to put a syringe inside a pen? And they have been builing these things since the early 20th century, so there is virtually 0 R&D required.
