Did anyone else notice that Joey Bishop never smiled when shaking hands with the guests after their segment was over? Also, Arlene's son once appeared on the show as a mystery guest, More importantly, during her ailing last years, he was with her and saw that she got everything she could ever have wanted or needed. He was admired throughout the industry for that.

Same here! Unlike most comedian panelists who tend to goof off instead of actually trying to play the game, Joey exhibits a good balance between witty wisecracks and clever problem-solving! Another guest panelist I really enjoyed was the ventriloquist Paul Winchell.

A recent story (September 2018) on the former Mets batboy who is retired in Boca Raton (FL). Among interesting tidbits is that he was a ballboy with the Yankees first and was a teammate of Ed Kranepool at James Monroe HS in the Bronx. He was still with the Mets organization in 1969 and has a World Championship ring to show for it. And he does mention his appearance on WML. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gI2KyNB8e72uoJs.html

My opinion: No doubt it was a great loss. But even if Dorothy Kilgallen hadn't died, I do not think it would have been any different. By 1967, Primetime Panel game shows in general were on the way out, and "What's My Line" was the last to go.

soulierinvestments I would never consider and I've never heard of these modern reality shows being considered by anyone to even be in the tradition of panel shows. The emphasis is all on the performers, and the panelists aren't playing any sort of a game, just judging a contest. I also don't think Dorothy's passing had anything to do with WML being cancelled-- it stayed on the air for two more years, after all, and was the last remaining show of its type in prime time. But I do think, and I've commented elsewhere, that the show lost a bit of its magic without Dorothy on the panel. She was a much needed irritant on a panel filled with folks who were otherwise there to be charming and entertaining.

Yes, the Mets did, indeed, beat the Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd game of that Sunday doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, 13-12. After blowing not 1, but 2 big leads in the game, they rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to win, in a game which took 3 hours and 42 minutes to play. Tracy Stallard cemented the save by striking out Pete "Gamblin' Rose" Rose for the final out. (The Reds won the first game of the doubleheader, 3-0; Bob Purkey threw a complete-game shutout.) At the end of that doubleheader, the Mets' record stood at 14-17. The future must have looked quite promising then for Mets fans on that day. Then they went on a two-week road trip, on which they lost 2 out of 3 to the Houston Colt .45s, lost 2 out of 3 to the San Francisco Giants, lost 4 straight to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and lost 3 out of 4 to the St. Louis Cardinals. By the time of Gil Hodges' Mystery Guest appearance in 2 weeks, things were not looking quite so promising for Mets fans.......

The winning run in the 13-12 game was driven in by the legendary Clarence "Choo Choo" Coleman, one of only 9 RBI's he had that year in 277 plate appearances. He was also a terrible fielder and about his only skill was that he was a fast runner for a catcher. But somehow he hung around for parts of four major league seasons, three of them with the hapless Mets who struggled through their early years finding a capable catcher, even after choosing a catcher as their first pick in the expansion draft that stocked the team (Hobie Landrith, a washed up backup player). Among the catchers who were tried and found wanting by the Mets in those early years were Chris Cannizzaro, Sammy Taylor, Harry Chiti (the player the Mets traded for himself), Joe Pignatano, Joe Ginsberg, Jesse Gonder, Norm Sherry, Hawk Taylor, Greg Goosen (the player they drafted ahead of Reggie Jackson), Jimmie Schafer, and John Stephenson. That's 13 different catchers in four seasons. Finally when they acquired Jerry Grote from Houston after the 1965 season, they had the catcher that would still be with them as their #1 when they won the World Series in 1969.
