Fulton John Sheen (born Peter John Sheen, May 8, 1895 - December 9, 1979) was an American bishop (later archbishop) of the Catholic Church known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. For 20 years as Father Sheen, later Monsignor, he hosted the night-time radio program The Catholic Hour on NBC (1930-1950) before moving to television and presenting Life Is Worth Living (1951-1957). Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated The Fulton Sheen Program (1961-1968) with a format very similar to that of the earlier Life is Worth Living show. For this work, Sheen twice won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality, and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine.

Abinormal - you probably know by now that his beatification was delayed "indefinitely." But no worries, because, first of all, a Beati ("Blessed") *is* a saint! They're in heaven! The canonization is just a wee ceremony that's called "Raising him to the Altar." And all that means is that he'll be given a Feast day on the Liturgical Calendar. That's wonderful, but he was a saint before then, so we are free to call him so. Saint Fulton J. Sheen, pray for the holy Church and for us all!

This is what our culture needs more outspoken Catholics not afraid to wear our faith on our sleeves. We need leaders that call a sin a sin. Today even Bishops are afraid to offend people and dance around questions, what fruit will you get if the world loves you but you don't speak truth. With people like his exelency Fulton Sheen people respected him because he spoke truth.I am fearful of our future if thing continue on this path, but I think things are turning around with the younger generation so I think hope over rides my fears

Poor Finian oh we have solid bishops still, but the prejudice had increased before the abuse was publicized. I'm a teacher in public schools, and I'm often praised for that, while mocked for continuing to be Catholic because of the scandals...even though public school teachers commit a far greater amount of abuse against children than priests ever have. That's not a defense of any abuser - every single one must be held accountable. Yet prejudice holds some to be worse than others, to the point of wanting to destroy one institution while at the same time wanting to throw more tax dollars at the other. My life is easier because I'm not held in suspicion just for being a teacher. People are quick to say the percentage of abusers in public schools doesn't represent all of us. But the same people have no problem lumping all priests together as abusers. That wouldn't have been the case in the 1950s or 60s - people would have held individual priests accountable while continuing to respect the rest.

Today, you couldn't have a religious priest, sister, Jewish rabbi or Protestant minister on a secular show. Some jackass would say it violates the so-called separation of church and state.

Sadly the modern bishops of New York can't bear his holiness and have succeeded in blocking SAINT Fulton J. Sheen's beatification. They make themselves look like fools. Archbishop Sheen has a cult (which means a following, not the bad kind of "cult"). In Catholic tradition, holy men and women around whom a cult is formed, so long as they are real people who can be demonstrated to be worthy of veneration by virtue of their devotion to God and His holy will, are eventually recognized undeniably, infallibly as Saints. The fact that Sheen has already officially been found to have a miracle attributed to his intercession will only increase his cult and lead to the Faithful venerating him all the more as Saint Sheen, without waiting for the pope to do the canonization. Plus, the bishops who called for the delay of his beatification, and the Vatican officials (including the pope) who approved their petition owe restitution to all the people who lost money because of short notice cancellation on travel and accommodations, not to mention the income to workers in Peoria who lost wages at Christmastime. Foolish!

Has anybody heard of Fr. James Altman? He is a courageous priest very much in love with Jesus and a great homilist. Unlike Bishop Sheen, he does not write JMJ on the board but every time he mentions the name of Jesus, he lifts his biretta. It's a sign of respect that we should emulate but with a slight bow of the head. I see this in TLM's. Fr. Altman is on KZread. Check him out if you are not familiar with him.
