A small axe is handy. A saw is a necessity. Great vid!

Yep! If one wants to Camp in the Forest in the Winter, you need a Fire. Fire needs Wood. Wood on the ground under Snow is usually soaked and/or Frozen. So you have to look for Dead Standing Trees. Fastest way to get the Tree Down and Processed is with a Saw. And that Silky is just the right size to get you a LOT of Wood. Logical, huh? Thanks Lars.

Hey Lars! I just ordered a Silky Big Boy 2000, 5 Minutes ago, before I see this Video. You will laugh, but since six years I use a Handsaw from Mil-Tec, what cost´s less then 10 Euros. It still works fine & I´m happy with it. But my Sister & me, we have bought a piece of Forest, so we have to cut wood. I have seen a lot of your Silky Videos & a Friend has exactly the Big Boy 2000. I have worked with it today in his woods & it was great. I have orderd also the Katana Boy for big logs. I whant to thank you for all your good Videos. May the Gods bless you & your Family. Greetings from Germania!

Survival Russia: Started back in the early 70's with a 12" bow saw blade with Duct tape handles - ha. Then, Great Neck handle with a reciprocating large teeth blade. Now, Silky 130 and 240. 5-6" max diameter logs all I need, if that (not as "cold" here). I use "squaw" wood mostly with no/few cuts. We've always built your "Siberian Log Fire". Same method, but smaller and we just called it a "fire" :-) I wish these knuckleheads would stop hacking through logs and wasting time and energy with their knife. That is last ditch, for emergency or if your saw breaks - IMO. Silky saws are phenomenal. Thanks.

Thanks for the video Mr. Lars. I have been putting off buying my first Silky until I started reviewing all your videos. I ordered two yesterday after watching this video. I have always used homemade 21 inch buck saws that I build myself. They are take down buck saws and fit into a small case/sleeve that I also build. The best thing I like about them is I purchased a couple dozen blades at a dollar apiece. This silky saw you show seems to me to be very efficient at cutting with a minimal amount of energy usage. I also like that you don't have to assemble it and it takes very little room in your sled or pack. I am always willing to learn a better way of doing things and I think you have persuaded me of a better way. We shall see when it gets here.

A good saw like your silky gomboy is in my opinion the best for a survival or bushcraft Scenario. it is lighter then an axe, much more quiter and it needs a lot fewer power to cut the trunk. the cut is perfect straight and in the end the saw is angainst an axe maximal saver! Thanks for the Video and greetings from Bavaria / Germany!

Using a saw is much more effective and quieter than using an axe /hatchet / tomahawk which are good for splitting timber. A saw like that is awesome for cutting in many odd confined areas of space, overall it's a good choice of tool, light weight and very versatile.

Hello Lars!!! Pleased to see the BigBoy 2000 as one of your favorites. Since starting out with the BigBoy 2000; for me it has been my go-to for my remote wilderness rafting trips and also for Fall Moose hunts plus Winter snowmachining. It truly is the best all-arounder. Mine is on its second blade and still running great. My other two favorites are the PocketBoy and KatanaBoy... favoring the XL or L teath in almost all cases woodscraft... except of course bones, antlers, horns, plastics, rubbers, or metals. I find in snow and ice applications that it can provide reasonable performance. Another thing worthy of mention is that it has good 'reach' if/when needed while still nice and controllable. I like the high visibility.... that said... I'd like to see it in a green 'glowing handle' as well as fluorescent orange or pink.

The smaller silkys are too much work for anything but a small fire. BigBoy has been in my canoe pack for the past 4 years. BigBoy and the Ray Mears Axe, the perfect pair for some chill paddling in the north country of NY. Makes easy work of processing wood... If I’m just out for a little nosh in the woods with a firebox the GomBoy is fine with a small hatchet or a decent bushcraft blade.

Seems that people who vouch for an axe instead of a saw don't seem to realise that getting to the point when you can chop firewood is a huge effort with an axe. An then when you know the SLF (official acronym for Siberian log fire), you realise that you don't need neatly chopped 30cm long firewood, but just a few logs. I think when people say that an axe is better they are thinking of nice maintained campsites where the wood is brought in. Both an axe and saw can do the same things, actually. The difference is in used time, and in a survival situation, you don't need to do all the things that a saw can do, but just the critical ones.

True But people have a tendency to break the blades as you know haha...the silky's weak point. This makes the cross cut saws virtually bullet proof but you need the skill set/tools to maintain it. Ultimately when it comes to gear we all make compromises in our gear choice's. There is no real right or wrong, it comes down to what works for each person and their circumstance/use.

Maybe bigboy 360-7(7 teeth per 30mm),is beter choice, only because it have the mirai-me option.I own same saw like in your video, and it’s great saw,but I will like ti try bigboy 360-7 to compare it with mine saw.

Looks like the perfect saw for my environment. Would love a video comparing saw to axe on dry, green and frozen green wood. I love my axe, grew up using one, but the saw is king in dry wood. Would have said the axe is better in green wood, but after moving here a few years ago, spruce trees frozen solid throughout chop differently. More glancing blows, bigger chips and The tree behaves a bit differently while felling. Anyways, I would love that saw instead of the bow saws I currently use. Take care.

Bow saws are great saws for out in the woods and some fold down to be portable but I’ve learned that nothing really beats a good sized silky saw the silky big boy is small enough to be carried around and in a pack but big enough to cut through legit logs and everything below that it’s a great tool

Do people build log cabins in Russia? Or I guess are they as popular as they are in North America? I haven't looked much, but would be fun to see Survival Russia do something like the My Self Reliance guy is doing. Would Bigboy be useful for such things?

Awesome video as always Lars! That's a pretty neat saw! Hopefully you're able to get all the firewood. As an unrelated question, do you get many salamanders out there?

Great video! I was ready to make a purchase for a upgrade from my Gumboy 210 but did not think that I needed or even wanted to spend $190 for the Katana Boy 500. The 2000 seems like the better choice for my plans this winter. Was not sure about the teeth but think that I'll go for the 6 per. The wood we have around here is mostly Red Pin or Oak. Now just want some decent snow and I'm going to do a overnight with a Siberian log fire. Might have to whip up some Fat Back as well. ;)

I have seen the Katanaboy 500 on Ebay, direct from Japan for just less than $100 delivered. Mine cam surprisingly fast. The 650's are $200 there and the blades are Around $150...I understand the 650 uses some crazy flash heat treatment that renders them expensive and difficult to sharpen, but stay sharp for a long time. Best wishes.

Thanks for the video. When you cut down a tree is there a specific angle you should cut at to prevent the blade from getting pinched?

The silky saws are decendants of japanese swords, probably some of the best examples of metalworking ever seen.A small diamond file set would be usefull to hone up the teeth if they got dull.

Hey Lars... Zdrastvuj kak zivjos? Nice video. Thanks to you I´ve ordered the big boy 360 (was "pitty-ly" the only deliverable to SVK) and I´m amazed with the performance... Your video brings me to a question (probably). Does a Silky saw have a sharpnes for eternity, or is it possible to sharpen after long use? I mean because of the difficult geometry of the teeth. Thanks. ... Keep the good work doing...
