What's Left | Post-Apocalyptic Short Film

Ойын-сауық

Shot in 2019, What's Left was the first short film I ever completed. At just under 40 minutes, this post-apocalyptic tale of friendship interrogates the idea of what makes life worth living in a dystopian world.
I really hope you guys enjoy!

As a longtime fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, I watch pretty much every film that gets posted to KZread. This one is exceptional. The acting, writing, pacing, and storytelling were mostly on point. The intro scene ended in a delightfully unexpected way. The story felt truthful, with a couple of forgivable exceptions, right up until the start of the final act. The fight at the end had good moments, but it felt rushed and contrived; my suspension of disbelief cracked during that part. Overall, you accomplished something that few low-budget films do, which is to inspire the viewer to care about the characters. The beach scene was cinema gold. You built genuine tension in me at points, and you avoided a boatload of the cheap post-apo tropes that are overdone and weaken similar films. The film could have been stronger if you had spent more time on the last part, but overall, well done!

Thank you so much for this feedback! It was our first proper attempt at a short film without much filmmaking experience so we did learn a lot from this one. I totally agree with everything you said! There was originally supposed to be a few more scenes prior to the end that established the cult-like hunters with more depth but because we all had university/ part time jobs we ran out of time over the summer! Would really love to have another stab at a post-apocalyptic short film though, and thank you for taking the time to watch! :)

I think you did an incredible job here, you really had me hoping for the best for these young men, but then stuck the knife right in me, such a tragic story and dismal ending. Not one of them survived. In this current time of pandemic and fear I just want to see somebody escape, to see some semblance of humanity, something to give me hope. This unfortunately did none of that, and I’m left feeling empty inside. The tears the one young man cried really got to me. All I want to know now is what was under those bags on their heads, what happened to make them go berserk? Now I shall never know.

Hey man thank you so much for these comments! Really really grateful and glad you enjoyed. Being the first film we ever made it's hard not to find fault with it from a personal POV, but even so very proud of what we did manage to accomplish. A bit more focus on the bagmen was always intended in the script, we just all had day jobs and university commitments so didn't quite have time in the holidays to shoot all the scenes we needed for it! Regarding the ending, this film was really about exploring what makes life worth living for these characters, and at the end the final choice is ultimately about not wanting to continue alone, and finding a level of spiritual comfort in potentially reuniting with friends through death. So it totally is dismal, but from Will's perspective, it was also supposed to imply a release.

an engaging story. You will learn, no matter how good the production value, ultimately, it is ALL about relationships....I'm going to "nit-pick" here. sorry. Okay, the teddy-bear didn't make too much sense as it wasn't established him having children... the sacks would have been more believable if there were eye holes so they could actually aim their guns. But, I get it. It represents a lot more than people. It represents how the world has changed, and how people can become evil. I wouldn't be writing this if I wasn't engaged in the film. So, well done. You should know, the world is full of critics. Only a limited few have actually touched a camera. I made films for 30 years in 6 different countries. I see promise here. Keep working. Your vision is the story.

Cheers for writing Steve! This was my very first short (shot in 2019) so I learnt a lot about the craft from this. To clarify the teddybear wasn't to insinuate anything about the characters having children, it was symbolic to the friends and their lost youth. To represent the idea of stolen innocence and being forced into a more primal state of survival that makes them sacrifice the lack of responsibility you see at the very start! Always appreciate the constructive criticism :)
