My main alto is also an 880, built like a heavy tank. My octive key protector is an asti spumante bottle cork which is nice and soft for added protection. In addition to most of the items you mentioned I carry a small jewelers screwdriver set, pencil, pen and hi liter, toothbrush and small toothpaste so I can take advantage of food offers and keep the sax cleaner. Most of the time I also have a gig bag with my flute and clarinet if needed, stand, wireless mic setup if needed, water bottle, tuner/metronome, any sheet music I don't have memorized, setlists, and a lot more if it's overnight or longer!

Got in the habit of keeping some cut coffee filter paper strips that were fairly close to the pad size. After session and bore was swabbed...old silk scarf w/leather pouch and lead sinker... then with dry bore, used the filter paper to gently ‘scrub’ the pad and remove moisture. Keeps grunge from building up in grooves and toneholes. Kept the neck either in old wool sock (clean) or wrap neck in scarf and store in bell. Loose wrap keeps neck from moving. Once in a while some tea-tree oil in the case (just few drops) which kills the funk and smell. And...always warmed up with small tuner that fit in there somewhere. Easy to overlook cork grease. In addition to clip-on mic, a small flashlight in the case...just in case. The BAM looks like a real good item. My fave was Selmer Tray-Pak (for alto) and standard zippered Selmer case for the MKVI tenor. Oleg make a real nice sax stand that folds flat. Some mic comparisons with quality clip-ons would be nice to see. Helpful tutorials, for sure... Carry on.

Boy, does this give me sax envy, but in a very enjoyable way. My one and only axe is a 1925 Conn (no high F# key, sadly) in a worn alligator skin case, with styrofoam wedges inside to keep it from rattling around in the blue velvet.

Naturally, I swab out my horns after playing but I also drop one of those Silica gel bags in the bell to remove excess moisture while the horn is sitting in the case. One thing about this method, I wouldn't recommend leaving the Silica gel in the horn when storing for extended periods of time as the sax pads might get exceedingly dry as the Silica draws out all the moisture in the case. I've never had a bad experience with this but just a precaution.

I really enjoyed hearing you talk about overhauling your saxophone. I'd appreciate a video that explains what you're looking for when you're having work done, and how to look after a saxophone over many, many years. I have a 15 year old Yamaha and 50 year old Selmer. Luckily both seem to be in excellent condition - there's a few little bits on the Selmer that need doing but nothing major. What are you looking for when you get work done? How do you know the action needs adjusting? Can you show us some examples? I've never had any work done to the Yamaha: not even recorking. But I guess at some point I'll need to look out for things.

My case is the old Walt Johnson from the 1990s. Not much room in there, so all I can fit is my Jazz Lab sax holder - which barely fits in the tenor bell. The neck has its own slot, and in that slot I have Dr Slick cork lubricant and I stick a piece of paper between the octave vent and the octave pad. I also have a little slot which fits two mouthpieces and a silk swan. Because of this limited space carry a backpack with everything else: The Hercules alto/tenor stand, my wireless mic setup, which is way bigger than Jay’s, my book of charts, my reed container (which contains all my clarinet and sax reeds), ear plugs, extra batteries for wireless mic. I drive a minivan, not a scooter, so I don’t need all the super compact stuff!

As my reed case I'm currently using a small plastic container that used to have pepper in it. I lightly soak two cotton pads in hydrogen peroxide and put those at the bottom to keep moisture, then I put the reeds on top (still inside their individual plastic protectors). Not a very fancy solution, but I'm yet to see any mold, and the reeds seem ok. I'm not sure if I'll ever need a proper reed case, but I'll keep an eye out for the Vandoren one just in case.

There’s a secret compartment under my sax that I keep spare reeds and my lyre. Unfortunately my sax stand is way too big for my case. I recently bought a stand that folds up into almost nothing and fits in my backpack. As you can tell most of this is for concert band 😂

Loving the rocking entrance and of course the video overall ! Would love to see you demonstrating some Baritone Sax playing as well . I 've got a question, i'm planning on buying my very first alto sax, since i am renting one at the moment. I know it's always the player that makes the difference of course, but i would like to buy a student's sax that would last the test of time with the proper maintenance, sound ok in gigs and be suitable for jazz repertoire, all without breaking the bank ( around 840 usd i suppose) . Any recommendations or maybe a video of yours about this subject that i may have missed ? Any particular sax brands ( yanagisawa, trevor james etc ?) Thanks in advance mr. Jay !!!

Hi..Fantastic videos....Here are my opinions about Bam tenor case. I have a Bam for my MKVI tenor similar that it appears in the video. Fantastic case , very protective..buttttt.....in one gig , one of the straps has broken and the case fall down ..not a lot of damages but I had to go to the reapairman....the straps was broken in the device that fix the strap with the case...(sorry my english is not very good...)....Uffff...!! Not big damage in the horn ..but i played the gig wit some problems in the sax..difficult..!!! Perhaps it´s a bulky cae to go to a local gig..the weight is high...too heavy....but it´s very protective. About reeds case....What do you think about reedjuvinate and the trick of use the listerine to store de reeds..? Thank for your videos they are fantastic..Gracias.

Can I know what reeds do you use? I’m a young saxophone Jazz player and I’ve been using Green Vandoren Java 2.5 reeds. They really work well for me and they have a nice quality and I’ve been using them over a year now. However, I wanted to ask a professional to see if they were good or any other better recommendations? Also, I have a Yamaha YAS-480 and again, it works well for me. However it brought the Yamaha 4C mouthpiece. I’m well experienced (not a professional) and I feel like it’s for a beginner type. I did buy a mouthpiece but couldn’t get the sound out of it; sounded “airy.” An mouthpiece recommended and/or ligature? Any recommendations will be appreciated :)
