What’s in a meme? | Andrew Baron | TEDxSacramento
Information and messages can be transmitted instantly around the world thanks to the Internet. Since speed of delivery is no longer solely responsible for front page news, what makes things go viral? Find out why Andrew Baron thinks understanding of our world lies in understanding memes.
The rise of internet video caught many off guard, but not innovator Andrew Baron, founder of Rocketboom, KnowYourMeme.com, and now HumanWire.org. Rocketboom, the internet’s first large-scale video program, began in October 2004 and is recognized with pioneering the democratization of the moving image while defining the online video distribution and business model popular still today.. Apple Founder Steve Jobs used Rocketboom twice for product releases:the first video iPod, and the first AppleTV. That should tell you something. Rocketboom Know Your Meme, the preeminent online resource for the study of memes and viral spread, was described as “an informative romp through internet culture,” by The New York Times. Now, as a “result of [his] frustration with the war in Syria,” Andrew started HumanWire.org to provide direct, one-to-one support to refugees. The site takes no fees from funds raised for refugees. Andrew has taught at Parsons School of Design and MIT.

I guess UrbanDictionary does define some things better than actual dictionaries.

Yes but almost just as often they misrepresent facts. . . . . . deliberately.
this is definitely not how memes work
The end of time... time is irrelevant... High Frequency Trading guy talk - so what we did to stop HFT was coil a couple miles of cable in our data centre so that the signals take a few micro seconds longer, and this really helps balance out the playing field
Excellent! I came here after learning about memes on a documentary about brain evaluation, this guy has too many ideas and information crammed in one video but really good.
Finally a relevant answer to the question What is a meme? Time for a more thorough understanding of this powerful mechanic.

Memes have been with us since newspaper print. They called them cartoons which conveyd exactly what memes of today do. Today's memes are nothing less than an impostor of what has been around for a long time. Buy a Mad cartoon magazine and it is nothing but memes.
What’s his thesis? What’s the message of this talk? What did I learn here??
They are weirder today than they’ve ever been
