What's in a Backpacking POOP KIT? | Miranda in the Wild

Спорт

Make the most of your pooportunity and pack a poop kit! Yes, you do have to manage your waste in the backcountry, and a poop kit keeps everything you need to bury or carry in one convenient spot. Here’s what I pack to be prepared when nature calls. Do you have a question about managing hygiene and health in the outdoors? Let me know in the comments below!

I just want to say I tried out the "backcountry bidet" squeeze bottle on a backpacking trip this past weekend and it was potentially life-changing...and I was so excited I stood up too quickly and scraped a butt cheek on a log so bad I was bleeding. Hahahaha. Ya win some, ya lose some I guess.

Fun and informative video, thanks!! I definitely pack out all my TP. I keep some sammy sized ziplocks in my kit. Fold up used TP carefully, stash in ziplock, and into a dedicated opaque trash bag (used grocery bags w/ rubber band works well). I just don't like seeing TP strewn across the backcountry where I'm camping!

There are actual backpacking bidets that will work better than what is shown here. They are nozzles that fit onto a standard bottle like a Smartwater bottle or soda bottle and have an angled spray. It's more ergonomic to "hit the target" and you can use a lot more water to get the job done if you need it. Personally, I highly recommend this approach, especially when backpacking where water is easily obtainable. Not needing to pack out used toilet paper is a game changer, plus your rear end will be cleaner than using toilet paper, which is a major plus.

Those are actually a little hard to find right now--at least the hard plastic Hygienna ones. I thought I lost mine on my last trip, and had a hard time finding a new one to buy. Even ordered one from WalMart, but the order got cancelled. Luckily, I found the old one, but it's a little disappointing to see that they might not be manufactured anymore.

Nicely done. These days I tend to either day hike or off-road but I can't tell you how tired I am of seeing toilet paper and excrement roadside or trailside. Not the scope of this video but the PET Cleanwaste Toilet is an excellent portable toilet for those car camping - I consider it standard gear these days offroad! With a vehicle, I always try to wag bag it as it's easy to pack out with a truck and I'm soooooo tired of seeing poop and toilet paper on the trail. I know this is an old video, but as nobody has responded I thought I'd add in. If I were female and hiking alone (or even a small female group) I would probably have a can of pepper or bear spray on my shoulder strap regardless of the local bear population. Other than the typical things anyone should do in hiking such as communicating plans, maybe a GPS locator, etc., some self defense tool like a pepper spray would be critical. Knives and trekking poles could help if you knew what to do. But in my mind, they allow people to potentially get too close to you. It'd be interesting to see if anyone has ever taught a self defense course for women using typical hiking tools. Best of luck out there.

Get a Glock (or any semi auto handgun in 9mm). Mace will also blind you if used in the right (wrong?) windy conditions. Tasers don't always work, especially the stun gun style. Nobody wins in a knife fight. Copper jacketed lead at ~1100 fps ALWAYS works. If you're not a gun person, get over it or have fun living like prey.

I’m binge watching these videos :) 1. Learn how to use TP properly. Two pieces of TP doubled up gets you three wipes, as you fold it over itself three times. The last one is known as the ‘polisher’. 2. If you use packets of tissues then tear one in half first. Then as per Point #1. 3. Try using Vaseline around your brown sheriff’s badge first. Then the poo doesn’t stick to your fur…much easier to clean up after! 4. There are some times when it all goes wrong. Make sure you carry enough TP to your cat hole to cover this eventuality :)

I joined a tour to the Sahara in Morocco in 2017 and 2015. The first camp was in the Zagora , it has proper western toilet and showers but the showers didn't work, so a lot of baby wipes. During my 2017 tour to Mazuga, the red sand dunes, that camp didn't have any toilet whatsoever 😢! The Berber said just go behind a tent! Its shifting sands does wonder, very weird but we must drink lots of water. I was so stressed out about the number2 part, that I couldn't go, which was good. Luckily it was only a one night trip to the Sahara and we were back to a normal hotel 😪 The Sahara is so mysterious and beautiful!

I can highly recommend using tablet towels that you soak up in water. They're lightweight, multi use and as they're wet when you use them it takes far less of them to clean your bum AND you can also use them right before to wipe your face, clean your ears or other even more private parts since you're alone anyway (hopefully).

I like the thought of a renewable power source, but I also like to pack light so I'm picky with my gadgets.

  • @rei

Good question! On short trips I sometimes carry a small battery to recharge my phone, but overall prefer to limit my power usage than to carry extras. Solar is fantastic for longer trips or when I'm hiking or climbing in areas that get full sun for many hours of the day. If you're not going to be spending time in consistent sun for at least six hours, I'd say solar panels will wind up just weighing down your pack. I hope that helps! - Miranda

Using a Kula cloth and bidet in a bottle has eliminated my need for toilet paper entirely. I take a 5ml dropper bottle with unscented Dr Bronners Castille soap, use a few drops on my fingers and wash my butt. If you are making hot water for coffee, you can dilute that for lukewarm bidet water. Seriously, test that on your wrist like a baby bottle first! Nobody wants a scalded butt. A nice warm bidet wash is so comforting. Usually I have enough water left after rinsing my butt to wash my hands. If not I wash at camp.

Since COVID, I’m am a portable bidet person. The one you have is not great. There are many on Amazon. I chose one with a dedicated bottle and a wand. It sprays, is lightweight and easy to use. I don’t recommend the cult-clean because you must use a water bottle and when you squeeze the water out, it is NOISY.

I keep my bug bag in my poop kit bag and a lighter to burn the paper in the hole before I bury it in case an animal digs it up.

Btw, you should only use back country flora for wiping, not the fauna... 😂The poor deer & bunnies do not want you using them to wipe & I am guessing if M doesn't eat meat, she isn't hunting...

I think you should have added your "Backside" Backcountry Bathroom needs. I think the "B" words exceeded the "poop" word.
