    I spent ten years in the Navy. I had the privilege of working with half a dozen other foreign navies around the world. The U.S. has the most powerful and fearsome military on the planet because of the people in it. They may not be the best and brightest society has to offer. But they are committed to their mission in a way that is the envy of every other military organization in the world, and that dedication also makes them the most formidable and deadly force anywhere.

    This video fails to mention the vast upwards social mobility that becomes possible for non-seriously-injured veterans during and after service. Coming right out of high school and into the Army, I left after 4 years with a car fully paid for, 20k cash in the bank, and a GI Bill that covered me for the next 4 years in college. That is the opportunity for you even if you came from the ugliest poverty area in the US. The military doubles as a massive training program and jobs program that massively benefits the poor while encouraging solid personality traits like discipline which might have otherwise been missing.

    Ellis Magnuson, it will always be like this. When shit hits the fan it's all "please america we need your help!" Then when it's over we are back to being hyper-violent imperial pigs. You can't ask for the most powerful military on the planet to come to your country and kill the bad guys for you, then act shocked and horrified when we give you exactly what you asked for, total domination of your enemy, it's a way for them to feel like the blood isn't on thier hands.

    What's Jim so mad at Edgar about? Did I miss something? I love when the left and dems go on the personal attacks and especially when they say the right is dumb and educated. College degrees use to be a lot more respectable but w the shit these teachers are teaching to brainwash weak minded kids it's become a joke. W the internet and great seminars about business and making money I will definitely not send my son to a university unless he wants to. It's a great experience but no longer needed for most people to have a great and successful career. Looking down on people like people r so smart because of some paper that says u memorized things the best. Having a Great memory does nothing to help u succeed for 90% of Americans. A great memory is awesome but not needed for success. It shows you don't have much of an argument or don't know how to expess the point your trying to make when u attack attack attack and most of its cussing and belittling. Ronald I'm definitely not happy w the special interest bullshit but who other than the govt would the military answer to. Special interest groups are part of America and if u were leading a large group w a lot of money or a group without much money at all but a lot of members then u would also be doing the exact same thing. People only hate it when they don't have their own special interest group that can wine and dine politicians for your interest. I'm a proud NRA member and we pay them to look out for gun owners best interest. The Dems move their agenda forward by one small step at a time. If u give one inch to them they will not stop until all guns are gone. That is the real agenda. Ar15 are responsible for such a tiny % of murders in America. I dont even thinks it's above .000002% but they say they won't to take because they kill so many even though the fact is that about 80% of all gun murders are done w Hand guns. Guns in general are responsible for about 63% of all murders and "assalt rifles only make up apprx 2% of total murders in 2015 and in that 2% it also includes any hunting style rifle and semi auto rifles. The ar15 alone is not even 1%. What should we do about the other apprx 40% of murders that are done w knives, fire, poison, blunt objects like hammers, etc.? Ban knives and hammers and now the most dangerous weapon of all which is the car. Apprx 50,000 people killed in car accidents. Ban cars and definitley the carbon monoxide coming out that 25000 people a year commit suicide by. Not sure how i ended up on guns but to say some interest groups are a great thing like the NRA. It's the way the system works. Our system not perfect but Like Winston Churchill once said " Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others."

    @Tucson, $15/hour has only been established in a few places, mostly where the costs of living are very high, and I doubt it will become widespread anytime soon. Also, US still has the highest wealth inequality of all developed nations. We have the most wealth, but increasingly, its all at the top. From a wealth inequality standpoint, we look more like a developing nation. In any case, I'm glad we have a strong military, but there is not reason we need to spend more than the next top 8 nations combined.

    Kevin Yancey yeah there’s a misconception about America. We’re not the wealthiest country in the world, we just have the wealthiest people. If those people leave, we’re just a smaller China without the work ethic.

  • @cheesemccheese5780

    @cheesemccheese5780

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@nimrand Although America does spend more than the next 8 nations it's a bit misleading because 1, chances are China's lying about their budget. And 2, some of the next 8 nations spend more as a percentage of gdp. I think part of the reason why America has high income inequality is because it has a shit economic system. The taxes have become high and the regulations have become indelibly making it harder and harder to have a small to medium sized business. Also, income inequality isn't necessarily a bad thing. Many poor countries are more equal than America. Afghanistan is one of the most equal countries. Another issue with saying income inequality is bad is that it assumes anyone who's in a certain income class will stay like that their whole life which is wrong. Something like 3 out of 4 americans will get in the top 20% in terms of income at some point of their lives.

    I watched a video where people in Afghanistan and Iraq were shown pictures of the twin towers in NYC and asked what they knew about them. 90+ % had no clue. When told what happened, still no clue. When told that was why the US military was in their country... no understanding at all, many insisted we were a conquering army and would be defeated... which is exactly opposite of why we think we are there. Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying we should or should not be there... that is above my pay grade. Im simply saying that the reasons we think we are there have nothing to do with reality.

    He says that the difference between the USA and empires throughout history is that the US doesn't take over the land that they invade. This forgets that all 3,717,813 sq miles of US soil used to belong to someone else. The difference between the USA and, for example, the British empire is that the US wiped out the native people so successfully that we often forget that anyone else ever owned the land.

    War is murder, that’s kinda the point. When one threatens another’s life or something imperative to their well being the United States steps in to ensure that doesn’t happen. The United States has a strong military to protect our and others way of life. I’m honored and feel it is a privilege to have family members who are veterans and hope I can live up to that honor of coming home a hero.

    We have support bases in allied countries mostly. Japan, Germany, Greece, Djibouti, Bahrain (etc...) all welcome our presence. They are spaces held for staging of equipment and personnel, and expeditionary support to surrounding areas. We don't "occupy" any of these countries- we lease the space from these countries, and it is symbiotic. We get our people and parts closer to the objective, and the allied country gets revenue from our government and from the personnel that are stationed there. Not only that, but those countries also know that if they are attacked, or they have a devastating natural disaster, our support (which happens very often) is right down the street. If there were massive hurricane that devastated the southern coast of Greece, it is much faster to fly 15 CH-60 helos full of corpsman, and medical supplies from the shore of Souda Bay to Athens (about 170 miles) than it is to move our closest carrier (without an allied base in Europe, that would be Norfolk, VA, which would be about 5,200 miles away) carrying those same 16 CH-60s. We have relatively few MOBs and FOBs in what we label "combat zones", or "imminent danger zones" in areas such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, and the majority of those are small FOBs (some are even just a square mile or less, unmanned radar fields surrounded by cyclone wire). You can honestly argue that our invasion of, or presence in the forward deployed countries is bad, but most of our "bases all over the world" are in allied countries, which welcome us with open arms, because of the fiscally, and defensively symbiotic nature it provides. Our military is also the largest humanitarian aid organization in the world, and all of history- even giving aid to the citizens of the countries we invade (which has also never been done on a large scale in all of recorded history). War *can be* quite a racket, but it is also necessary. It is even necessary to war with countries far from our shores. If our military was solely tasked to defend our border (from within our border) then we would only have a National Guard, which would have to wait until we *are* attacked to war with those attackers inside our own borders. I don't know about you, but I'm willing to fight far, far, far from our shore to keep from having to fight in it.

    America always has amazing intentions and is constantly voted for being the most generous country and many first world countries that are really high on many lists for being the happiest and free us in the world are largely due because of the US military however and this is true since Lyndon B. Johnson the United States American military has been very controversial and has actually done more harm in major wars and certain military conflicts including covert ops then good. And it’s not only democrats but republicans that Devastate countries look up the Contreres wars and the current Honduran crisis that was started by Hillary Clinton as well as the Syrian and bengazi failed states. And Nixon’s (good intentions) but disastrously failed Chile Chop by replacing an elected leader with pinoche. As well as the funding the mujihadin in order to help the Soviet Union fail. But America has given an enormous amount of food and protection to many countries and freed thousands of slaves from captivity. American troops are true embodiments of what the chivalrous knight is but some of their causes have failed with dire consequences.

    Gotta say, I think you're wrong about this John. I would argue that we have no right to behave like the world's policemen, and on top of that, Congress has now given the office of the presidency the ability to enter into "extended military engagements" which are wars that they don't call wars. We have been at war now with an undesignated enemy simply known as "terrorist" for almost 18 years now. This isn't about defense, because we can hold our own against the rest of the world indefinitely, this is about power.

    Special interests are the military: people who directly and or indirectly financially gain from being involved with it (troops, corporations who make weapons/tech for it and any individuals/corporations foreign or domestic involved in policy to make contracts and feed it!!! That is a shit load of people getting some kind of welfare from taxes. Many of those people pay taxes as well but directly get more benefit from a military beast that consumes resources whether it protects the USA or not. Other special interests are farmers of all stripes and government K-12 schools and government universities!! Lastly special interest lie with police and law courts. All of these entities are "on the dole"---financed by taxes and supposedly for the benefit of the commons--us but more often to the benefit of the people who work in it!! That is where the corruption is!! Lastly your city/town government (schools already mentioned). The city/town/muni worker gets 100% benefit (salary) at the expense of everyone else!! LOOK AT ALL OF THE WELFARE!!!!! We have to much government and many of it is corrupt ("War on Drugs", illegal asset forfeiture, prisons/jails for profit and cronyism)!!!! There in is the problem with our country and why our country is fucked up in debt!! I only want to pay for law courts that are not corrupt and police that are not corrupt (Zero war on drugs and the corrupt asset forfeiture that goes with it) and a military that defends the USA not some other country and or countries. Let other countries develop their own militaries and or pay us to defend them.

    I think it's good to give aid to countries after fighting a war there. And that we have a big military if needed. I dont have any moral problems with invading other countries on human rights issues. I just don't see how the huge costs can be justified. I suppose the original wars after 9/11 were in the expectation of an age of massive terrorist attacks. But we do spend a lot of money on the military.

    *Point 1:* Stossel is a "libertarian" supporting a big and imperialist military. It shows you two things: 1) How pervasive the pro-US terrorist military culture is in US society and 2) That US politics is so corrupt that political ideologies that once supported intellectualism/centrism have shifted right. *Point 2:* Notice they don't debate the morality and ethics of the US terrorist military invading many countries and nations. *Point 3:* The bar and standard that they compare the US terrorist military are to brutal (almost all-white) colonialist terrorist regimes/states. *Point 4:* They argue

    and do you know why America made Japan and South Korea what they are today??? to stop soviet influence... especially in Korea... in Japan America wanted a good pacific foothold/ military base........... Japan and Korea also are made capitalist for a VERY good trade partner for America as well.. think of all the brands and trades.... thats also why the Marshall plan was put into action.... to stop soviet influence and to make euro rich enough to become big consumers and a plentiful trade partner. I am not saying America is in the wrong.... but americas reasoning behind it is Extremely selfish
