What's Going on with the Heralds? (FULL COSMERE SPOILERS) Cosmere Connections Ep. 6

VIEWER BEWARE, FULL COSMERE SPOILERS AHEAD.
Hello!
This is the sixth video in my series exploring the Cosmere, its magic systems, and its inhabitants.
This has been designed for more experienced cosmerenauts, so come back after reading some if you have not yet been introduced to the Cosmere.
What is the Cosmere, you ask? the Cosmere is a collection of Brandon Sanderson novels, series, and short stories that make up one gigantic shared universe. Its pretty freakin' cool.

    I just figured they'd been insane for their entire time since the last desolation, driven mad by the supernatural torture.

    At the start of way of kings, we see the recreance, and they were all lucid. One of the themes, like in Tolkien, is that everything decays and gets worse over time. We see that the Fused are also going insane over time, and they weren't tortured.

    @@CHIIIEEEEEEEEFFFFSSS Seems to be a side effect of being a Cognitive Shadow for too long. Eventually you lose your original personality and complexity and your entire existence becomes nothing but trying to follow a single overwhelming obsession or impulse to the exclusion of all else. You become a Spren, more or less, a being driven by a single concept.

    @@Osyrous I am on board with the theory that breaths somehow preserve your sanity. Breaths grant some interesting mental characteristics. Maybe part of the agelessness heightening is that it preserves you both mentally and physically. Regarding Hoid, if our breath theory is correct, then I think it's possible that his immortality is due to breath. All we know about Hoid and breath is that he has reached *at least* the second heightening. Could be higher. But I also think it's possible that he has a more unique or divine status than just being highly invested. And that something about him /his race has unique, almost godlike/shardlike properties inherently. But lastly, I want to point out that we really can't say with 100% certainty that Hoid isn't insane. My personal longshot Hoid theory is that he eventually becomes the primary antagonist.

    A new oathpact will have to come to pass, and the one who started the oathpact has now fallen traitorous. We can assume that at least one other Herald will die, and that a few of our beloved characters will become Heralds themselves as they form a new oathpact or something greater that will lead to the eventual defeat of the Shard known as Odium.

    Voranism: And lo, the Heralds chased the Voidbringers back to the Tranquiline Halls, and verily they took the fight to them there, to drive them even further into the Great Void and reclaim the Realm of the Almighty for all True Believers! Reality: Actually, we uh... sorta blew Heaven up with unrestrained Surgebinding? But some of us were able to escape death and came here! And the nice crab people let us have Shinovar which was more or less like the world we came from, but it was so small, we just had to take over the entire planet and trap their minds in an Unmade! Oh yeah, we also stole their less angry God from them and in return, we let them have our old crappy one! I don't understand why everything on Roshar hates us so much?

    It seems quite obvious to me that their madness is related to memory. I assume spoilers for Rhythm of War are fine here, given the title of the video and all, but in the epilogue of RoW, Taravangian/Odium says to Hoid that he would had to have stored his memories in some way to avoid going mad. Of course, Hoid is older than the Heralds by far, but it seems safe to say that just straight up getting too old will make you mad if you do not control the amount of information stored in your brain. I think it's also quite obvious that torture has some part in their madness. While it has been mentioned that they seem quite lucid at Aharietiam, the last Desolation, I don't think that means it had no effect. They were all clearly tired and incapable of going through more torture, but the memory of the millenia spent being tortured remained. Madness is not some instant thing that happens after you hit a breaking point, but rather a slow decent from lucidity to complete insanity. They might have been experiencing some symptoms of madness already when they made their decision, and the constant memory of what they have experienced slowly bringing them further and further away from lucidity. I would not be so quick to think that Honor or the Oathpact is at all relevant to their madness. We have seen quite clearly that mental health is not cured through investiture, even Honor's investiture specifically. All the Knights Radiant suffer from mental health issues and not a one has been given a quick fix from bonding a spren. I would thus conclude that a connection to Honor is not what drives them mad, nor what fixes them. Taln clearly reacted positively to Dalinar opening the perpendicularity though, but whether that was because of investiture or a close connection to the spiritual realm is hard to tell. I do believe they mention in RoW that it doesn't work anymore after the first time though.

    This was written before I had a chance to read Rhythm of War, so take everything you see in the video with that in mind. But yeah, it's tagged full Cosmere spoilers, so spoil away. All that said, after Rhythm of War I would argue that both memory storage as well as abandoning their oathpact have had a role in shaping their individual madness. Before the next stormlight, I would love to revisit this topic, because there is a ton of new information regarding cognitive shadows and memory that was revealed. In the meantime, in one of my newer videos I mention this topic briefly when talking about Hoid, Odium, and their interaction during the epilogue. You'd probably be interested in that video specifically. Enjoy!

    @@LoreoftheWorlds Oh, I realized that this was posted before RoW came out before I hit send, so I hope it didn't come across as I thought you had missed something, as that was not my intention. I already saw that video right after this one XD And I think you did a good job wording some of my thoughts in a more clear manner in that one, which I really appreciate! Makes it a lot easier to spot potential flaws in my reasoning, as well as understanding better why I feel the things I might not be self-aware of after reading. You make really good videos and I think I'll be watching a ton more

    I dunno if that'll work. If Honor himself and one of the Wisest Heralds - pre-insanity - working together could only come up with the "constant torture, clearly doomed to fail eventually" Oathpact, how are Honor's Shadow and bunch of pants-on-head, cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs Heralds going to come up with something better?

    Blind Justice doesn't usually hunt down specific people. While he takes no consideration for nuances, he can't really be considered blind justice. He is more Letter of the Law, applied when needed. That is the single worst type of injustice, since it defies the actual blindness of true justice.

  • @Colonel_Overkill

    @Colonel_Overkill

    I would argue Nale is the most blind justice can be as he executes the law to the word regardless of any other factors. He also basically rapes the spirit of the law in this process however.

  • @CNNBlackmailSupport

    @CNNBlackmailSupport

    @Colonel_Overkill Nale uses trick workarounds to go after people that are otherwise safe from harm twice, if I remember right. He asks someone to quickly designate him a position, and he uses ambiguity in the wording of a law in a tenuous "if then" chain. Regardless, blind, in the context of justice, means without prejudice, not without cause. Blind justice writes speeding tickets to both the 60 year old rich guy and the 17 year old poor guy. It does not follow one guy around until he goes 1 mile over the speed limit and then throwing him in jail.
