Yes ! I started building in the late 60's - up to 1977 when I moved out of my parents home. Don't know what happened to all the built kits that I left behind (probably Mom threw them all away). I started buying kits again in the early 2000's and was just setting them aside because I was still working. They were still relatively cheap back then and I created a huge stash. I retired in 2017 and have been steadily opening boxes and building since then. I like the slow pace of retired life and I can spend as much time as I want on each build. I also found that the "junk yard lots" on eBay to be a good source of spare parts to customize kits. Good luck to every one getting back into building.

As far as painting goes, I used to dread painting because it was always the most frustrating and weakest element of my builds. Once I started following the processes on Donn’s DVDs (I have them all) painting is now my favorite part of my builds and my paint jobs are orders of magnitude better. The tips and tricks videos are very helpful also, and Donn’s Patreon channel helped me take my builds a few notches beyond what I thought I could ever produce.

I do love hearing about people trying to argue with Old Man and literally not having anything to back up their arguments. Don has done great things for the community and when he speaks regarding this hobby you will always benefit by paying attention, he's literally no nonsense. People always want to argue with veteran builders until they are blue in the face. I've got 40 years of building experience across hundreds of kits and multiple show wins, yet some people still want to tell me that I don't know what I am talking about or debate things that I say. Oh well!! That's just more knowledge and tips to pass on to people who actually WANT to learn !!!

I'm 60 years old and been building models since I was 7 and I'm still learning and enjoying the hobby.

You said it and I say it constantly, "I learn something new everyday" ! I'm 52 and am constantly listening to the people who have been there and done it ! It's so easy to learn from other people's work and mistakes ! Appreciate your work. 🍻

When I first saw your work I stopped building tanks and went back to cars. I love building tanks and airplanes but IMO being able to build a model car correctly is the pinnacle of model building...you can't fake it...you can't hide mistakes behind weathering. I started watching your videos, joined your Patreon and purchased DVD #1. I love your "old school" approach. You offer an apprenticeship that as far as I know nobody else is offering for model cars. As far as nippers go I use the cheap Hobby Lobby pair but if I need a precise cut I use the knife. Anyone obsessing over a tool probably doesn't produce much from that tool. Don't let 'em get to ya buddy. The proof has always been in the pudding and always will be.

I never ever use super glue to attach glass to my models. Modge Podge is the best thing I've found in recent years to use for this IMO.

I use clear silicone to glue my glass in have time to adjust and can clean up boo boo's wipe off but need to find low ammonia silicone and different drying times too

Hey Old Man , I know you like doing a lot of your modeling old school stye , But have you ever tried : Molotow Liquid Chrome Marker ? They are made with different point sizes , I hear they are good for doing the chrome molding / trim , If you did try the Molotow makers what's your thoughts on the product ?

I recently got back into the hobby (the only good thing that came out of the pandemic, IMO,) last year. I built my dad a '56 Bel Air for Father's Day (he drove one in high school) and I used Bare Metal Foil that I bought over 25 years ago! It wasn't easy to use but it came out much better than the Revell Germany decals would've. The BMF was very thin, and the adhesive was not very good anymore, even though it was kept in the envelope it was just TOO OLD! I was just about to buy some more; I think I'll wait. This is why I watch your videos, thanks for the heads up on that product. Any other alternatives to BMF, like real aluminum foil?

You do really good work, I have just started the 1968 1 in 2 Dodge Charger Kit my first in 55 years... I wish I had watched Fundamental Friday before using telephone wire... But from this point on I am going to make my investment look good...

I love the Krylon killers who "can out paint everyone" with giant spray cans of krylon and duplicolor. When you go check their work the paint is usually so think they may as well have just dunked the body in a can of house paint.

Ive used both with less than favorable results. If I use a "rattle can" I try to use the Tamiya paints. The old model paints were far superior but because they werent environmentally friendly they changed the formulation, or stopped making them altogether.

@@dmgscalemodels2825 When I first started before I got my airbrush set up I found the Tamiya cans and had good results with them. They go down thinner and seem to pull tight to the body so you don't get that drown in paint look.

Hobby spray cans have a finer nozzle than what Duplicolor gives you so you will alway get better spray results with hobby sprays like Tamiya and Testors. Every car I've ever seen done with Hardware spray paint looks chalky and has orange peel in it. I have never ever seen a Car paint job done with duplicolor that looked even decent, others may have but in my 50 years I have not, and I've been to hundreds of shows over the years.

I have to admit that Alclad chrome looks great but I don't like to use it because it's too delicate. If you handle it too much, it'll rub off. I've been experimenting with AK Interactive Extreme Metallics. Haven't tried the chrome yet but the aluminum really looks good, and a lot tougher than Alclad.

The AK extreme metals are enamels. they are "quick drying" but I've still picked parts up 2 days later and put finger print impressions in them. And my experience with their chrome was that it wasn't any more durable than Alclad. Maybe there's something in the oils in my skin, I dunno, but that was my experience. I've tried several chromes and keep coming back to Alclad and aqua glossing it to save it from my hands of doom.

I'm 30 and grew up learning and being taught the old school way and these younger guys you are talking about that's hating don't like the older school.way of learning and teaching which is shut up listen to what the expert or pro or teacher has to say then keep your mouth shut about your opinions on it and take what you need from it and go on. Your way better at teaching and explaining on how to be a better builder and how to get better quality models then a lot of the other youtube pages. I bought your DVD on airbrushing and my builds went from good looking no orange peel kinda shiny paint jobs with model rattle cans or orange peel to hell with airbrush to beautiful shiny deep looking paint jobs right away as long as.ppl.follow it 100 percent and take no short cuts they can to get beautiful show quality paint jobs. Anyone is capable of doing it just if you wanna put the time in or not is the difference

I agree, Bob Smith Gold + is anti fog CA. To be on the absolute safe side though I personally use Testors clear parts glue for all of my clear parts, Bob Smith for everything else

Bickering has no place in a hobby that is supposed to be fun. Everyone has their own methods, techniques, and skill level. I like and have learned certain things from everyone. This is supposed to be a modeling COMMUNITY, where we all, support, help, and appreciate each other. If people want to bicker, they should go to channels that "discuss" politics. Has anyone figured out a finish to protect the Alclad when going for a chrome/shiny metal finish?

Alclad recommends using their Aqua Gloss clear (not their regular Klear) as it doesn't deaden the shine as much as a normal clear. Something to do with the way the paint works. I use it myself and the pieces I've done came out great. I've heard others claim to be good with other clears but I chose to stick with what Alclad says to use on their chromes.

Use scotch tape . Stick it on , pull it off , it will take the decal with it . You might have to do it several times if a particular decal is being stubborn.

For me personally if I'm in a dry spell or modeling funk what I like to do is look at other people's builds or watch videos of builds and real-world cars. Eventually something will catch my eye and start to give me ideas that I want to try out, then the building begins.

what about when you take money from a customer for a job then take forever, the paint is so thick the badges are barely visible and you burn through the paint polishing and then try to cover it up using a sharpie?

@@jeffmiller2682 I made the switch to Hasagawa’s mirror finish. A little expensive, but there’s 0 waste and at $15 there’s more than enough to do 10 cars easy. It’s flexible, so I just cut 1/16” strips and carefully placed it on my trim, and it came out great. With this stuff you could paint your trim black, then go over with the thin strip of hasagawa’s chrome, you can simulate the rubber in the windows.

All in all stay off facepage, it's designed to do what it does.keep up the good work

I hate to bother you but, Facebook and other KZreadrs is why I'm no longer building models. I built because I'm limited to what I can do, health wise. I'm not building for shows just to entertain myself so that's that. I closed all my club and users group because I was told that my skills are not great that I shouldn't be posting photos yet or the colors shade is wrong, ! was even told that I should find another hobby. So I watch once in a while. I have books now to help out. Do you know what i;m saying?

I do …. Everyone has a right to build for themselves and enjoy it while they are doing so . If one listens to the naysayers and trolls , they are living by someone else’s boundaries rather than their own . The easiest way to approach this is to try and build each successive model better than the last . Don’t be afraid to make mistakes , that’s how we all learn to better our skills . Have fun with it and tell the critics to go pound sand up their ass !

But, I was chatting with one guy and he said it can take almost 6 months to finish a car. I'm a "weekend builder" I could careless if I didn't match the body and hood color.

Hey old man $0.05 of advice don't feed the trolls. There are always a whole's who will try and tear you down because they are nothing more then losers who don't want to put in the time to learn and be better. Now whether or not that's their interest to learn more and get better I don't know. But they sure seem to have a lot of damn time bitch and moan about other people. And I can tell you will right now that everyone would be so much better off if everyone stayed out of everyone else's business. I don't understand why some people seem to think that it is their job to get into everybody's business. Are they lonely? Are they tired of living in moms basement? Eh, hard disagree with the fact you can't get amazing results with a rattle can . I have painted hudnreds of 1-64 scale cars with rattlecan's that look better than what most people who use airbrushes can do , and even some of my own airbrush work. You may just have crappy rattle can skills the same way many people have crappy airbrush skills . At the end of the day I polish my work so whatever peel is there is gone

Now I don't agree on everything he says because 90 % of his work is old-school hell he uses a single action airbrush and enamel paint but the man can make a beautiful car body also the Rust-Oleum thing you have this KZreadr who uses it and has a lot of followers but he uses the cheapest things he can find and dose crappy work but people still follow him 🤔 but that's the model car side of modeling which I'll never understand but like I always say you have model builders and you have people who just puts models together you have to pick which one you wanna do

Action of the airbrush is for detail not general painting, and Cars come factory with enamels and lacquers not Acrylics. If you are arguing dual or single action each has their purpose and both do the job equally, the only difference is one gives you great detail in small areas, while the other is 100 times more consistent in the spray pattern. You can do awesome work with both and body painting even fades and gradients can be done easily with a Single action if you know how to use it. Duals are great and most hobbyists will have and use both depending on the job at hand.

@@animalyze7120 now we talking about model cars not real cars and Yes I have painted quite a few real cars with acrylic paint ( auto air paint ) which is amazing stuff but a single action airbrush just blows paint on the model you have no control over it and it uses way to much paint and yes you can get the same result with both styles of airbrushes hell when I first started that's what I started with till I saw the results of a double action airbrush and never used a single action again in 25 years
