I’m 47 and grew up watching my Dad build. I received a kit (70 Chevelle) and gave it a shot, and found your videos. I’m beyond addicted, making mistakes and learning my way. But boy is this fun and addicting. Thank you for all the advice and being so kind to us new builders.

My wife bought me a '66 Shelby GT350-H kit as a retirement gift, to make sure I had a hobby so I would not drive her crazy. I am about halfway through the build, and I must say that your posts have been invaluable in helping remember what I forgot and learn what I never knew. I am taking my time, learning from my mistakes, and enjoying myself. Thank you so much!

Hi Donn and thank you for what you do. I'm 70 years old and dove back into scale autos once again. After having so many frustrating builds over the years, you have given me direction and the patience to understand why so many builds did not meet my standards. Thank you and may God Bless you for your dedication to this hobby.

I for one appreciate the hell out of your videos. Im 37 and have done models occasionally since i was about 12. Very basic builds. I decided to make models a family affair with my 9 and 13 year old and found this channel while searching for an answer to a question. I can now learn and teach my kids how to do this hobby the best way possible and hopefully they will love it for a lifetime as i have.

I started building with a group of my friends when I was 9 years old. I would mow lawns for money and run down to Kmart and buy another kit. Back then, spray paint was never used by us. We hand painted everything, even bodies. I would give anything to have those old kits back! Got back into it a few years ago and went all in. I didn't know how much I didn't know until I started watching all the modeling you tube channels. Yours might not have the production value of others, but it is the most valuable to me. I feel like you could have been one of the guys I built with back in the day. When I want to learn something I go to your channel. Great work and thank you for sharing your years of experience as to what works and how you do things. You have inspired me to use your knowledge and think my own to create my own little takes on doing things. From one old man to another, thank you!

You’re supposed to learn something new every day is what my ole man taught me. I do learn something from your videos and other good guys out there. Getting back into it with all of this great technology and plethora of information is great. I do remember those black and white scale auto mags and making mistakes with friends. A great time to be modeling and encouraging anyone who wants to build better. No time to be buzzard to others. Thanks again for all you and your crew do for the hobby.

Thanks for sharing your advice to do all of the things that you discuss. I'm 50 years old and started modeling when I was 9 or 10. Started out building and no paint. After doing a few, I got into painting them. Got side tracked for a while and didn't build any. I've recently got back into it after maybe close to 15 years and and I've found that it has come a long way with different tools and equipment to make things easier and seeing all of these modeling channels on KZread with ideas, advice and procedures for things.

What a great visual imagining you building models with a group of buddies on a porch in the rain. As a 52 year old guy that has spent his childhood building alone, adolescence building alone and adulthood building alone I never thought of modeling as a group activity until getting into KZread recently. Very cool.

Hi Don, thanks for these Q/A and Fundamental sessions. I've spent years watching many channels but your mini sessions still give me new information in a concise format. I'm revisiting this hobby and as I approach 60 I may be in old man territory by age only, not by skill in the trade. I've done two models in two years but I'm continuing to try new applications and getting better with the craft and it is due to all of you that make these videos so those like me can see the techniques and hone our own skills. Thank you!

Donn... I'm 75 I live in San Diego California I just got reacquainted with model cars right around 2 years ago after not having done anything with him since I was 16 years old back in 1963. When I was a teenager I had probably 200 model cars AMT mostly. And they only paints that were available then we're testers in the tiny jars ant spray paint. Now I'm interested in 1/18 scale models diecast... And I have a couple of 18th scale Danbury mint model cars. Which I've been. I know they say don't customize the event the mint models but I don't care nevermind I'll do what I want with them. You've been a great help to me. I want you to know that, Donn.. especially with the cutting buffing technique. Long live model car builders and The Craft. God bless you.

Hey Don, thanks so much for sharing your experience both as a vehicle for others to improve their own craftsmanship and as a beacon to show what may be possible with effort, patience, and experience. The young man asked what YOU do to get your paint looking so good and you shared what YOU do. He didn't ask what the minimum standard was, and maybe the person who "piled on" gets awesome results with 4-600 grit (like you, I kinda doubt it), but he's behind-hurt because no one asks him stuff. Probably because they look like they were sanded with a rake, but that's being snarky (which you avoided...kudos!). Like most kids my age, I built models in my pre- and early-teen years in the late 60's-early70's and they were satisfying to me at the time. I've been trying to get back in now for a while and am getting started. You are absolutely correct that the information available to us has never been better or easier to find. I'm looking forward to continuing my modeling adventure and appreciate very much being able to tap into your experience to see my own skills develop. I can only hope to complete anything as nice as your blue '62(?) Impala I saw yesterday...but if "this" model is better in some way than the last one I built then it was a successful adventure. Thanks!

I'm 55 and about to get back into the hobby, but I didn't build much when I was a kid. I appreciate what you said that it's a hobby and that it doesn't matter how you build yours as long as you are enjoying doing it. I myself am watching your videos because I do want them to have more details. So like you said, whatever someone says or shows, no one else should have negative comments about it.

I wonder how you do it, I can only imagine the time you answer questions. I found the best person who would enjoy my building. It's my dad. He loved cars and what we would do when he was good we would go to looks at car lots (Only at the lots my dad knew so they would let us alone)and after get a pizza. I could build a car and have a big thumb print on it and he would tell me its the best one so far. Dad has gone home to be with the Lord but I can still here him say that. Thanks again my friend. It's nice to know there are nice people out there. I'm thinking you was a Engineer or a teacher

You hit the nail on the head with the MOJO blaster Donn. More often than not this is how I have nipped it in the butt. The biggest take away is find something. Do a major clean up of your work area. Clean up your tools. Re organize your paints and supplies. I find with a nice clean work area makes me happy and want to get it a messy again lol. Sure they have nothing to do with the build itself initially. Think of it like being a chef, clean work surfaces, good ingredients, and a passion for it. same same same. KUTGW my man.

Lots of nice tips. The biggest thing a modeler can learn is to take your time. When you take your time it is amazing what you can do with the right tips, tools, and supplies. Keeping the paint area clean and not paying attention to assholes are the biggest tips here.

Hi Don love what you do I am 52yrs old and I have a very aggressive form of rhumertoid arthritis which unfortunately disabled me out of work. I built models cars as a child loved it trained to be a car mechanic it's been my trade for 30 plus yrs also built a couple of custom vans etc it all came to an end 7 yrs ago when I became ill, so started building models again in an old damp shed in my garden (I am in the UK by the way) I found that the handling of the smaller parts helped keep the dexterity in my fingers plus kept my mind occupied. I strived to make better models every time but my environment I was in was the limiting factor. When my mother died 2 years ago she left me and my sister a little bit of money not a huge amount but it was enough for me to buy a very nice heavy duty 12foot x10 foot replacement shed, insulated floor to roof and wood lined it's heated and I have great extraction and ventilation. When you mention about keyboard professionals dissing your advice etc it surely is frustrating my issue isn't keyboard professionals it's the rest of my family they think that I should not have spent 9000 pounds on a shed to play with toys in. They will have a stroke if they new that I also spent the remaining money on fresh materials, paints, airbrushes, and of course kits lol. The cost of it all may sound extreme to allot of people and a couple of friends think I am crazy but I need a hobby but I want to build better kits in a better environment plus its mine and I can control it also the naysayers don't have to live with an extremely painful disease day in day out so I just ignore them lol. Do you send dvd to the UK..

I ran into this on my most recent AMT build... the thing was COVERED in stone kind of sticky residue... seemed like cosmoline or something, and I had a hell of a time getting it off. Also had fisheye problems on a galaxie trailer kit that I made sure to wash everything first and STILL had problems getting paint to stick to it.

I hate to see the negative comments. I see a lot of the new or even old builders coming into the hobby say that don’t want to share there builds because there not as good as others. I always tell them to always build for themselves and not to build to please others . Then on each and every build after that to try something new or different. Regards to your response to the use of a dehydrator. How soon do you put the body into it? Do you let the paint lever out before or do you do it as soon as you are finished the coat that you are doing?

Oldman, what do you do for battery cable connection?. How do you connect photo etch to the wire?. And what tools do you use to make a nice connect? Please consider a video on how to do this procedure. No one has produced a video on the subject. What is your take???

Have you tried to strip any of the MCW enamels? I shot my color and it came out with a heavy texture. I tried wet sanding but have come to the conclusion that I’ll have to strip and reshoot it. I normally use the dollar store degreaser, and it’s worked well so far, but this is one of my Holy Grail kits. Any advice is greatly appreciated

What paints do you recommend I've started doing car models. I use acrylic and enamel paints. When I polish my model cars with acrylic paint when paint them the paint comes of the model.
