One thing I forgot to mention that scares me with Ryan Bates is the 2 games he started at center in 2022 he had pass block grades of 52.4 and 55. Not great 😬

I like him as our #1 backup, who ever needs the break, whoever gets hurt, he can theoretically fill each and every position on the online so necessarily dont have to stack multiple o-line positions

Poles I believe will trade down to stack picks this draft has a lot of talent to help build this team also believe they will draft a QB in the later rounds to develop them in Shane's offensive

Exactly and using a draft pick hints at trading back for more picks. Why use a pick?

This is a home run. Dude is not gonna start but he'll be very good off the bench when Tev breaks, Nate takes a month off and [insert Center name here] gets injured.

Good move, getting Bates. Veteran. Reliable. Poles will draft an OC (JPJ, Zach, Van Pran), and develop him under Bates. Bates is a depth piece, IMO.

They needed interior o-line depth and trading for a guy they like, is position flexible and has a track record might be a better situation then relying on a rookie or missing on someone in free agency. I don’t mind the move. Their interior line stunk last year.

Bates will be our interior line depth. He comes with a better grade than any of our other interior line grades except Jenkins. We will FA sign a center and probably draft another depth piece.

To me this could mean a couple of things! Poles wasn’t comfortable with our back-ups and the second is that he is planning another trade to acquire picks. There is no way that with how the combine went you trade valuable draft capital in this year’s draft class, it’s too loaded to not have more picks..

love your videos... keep it up! IMO trading a 5th round pick (assuming it would have been a rookie O-lineman) for a proven "average" starter at center/guard... is a good deal for us. It is an upgrade from what we have currently and better than what we could have drafted.... look at history... we were initially disappointed trading a second rd pick for Sweat, and look how that turned out. We will end up loving this once the season starts. Plus, I think it makes the "trade back" even more of a reality now... which hopefully means MHJ! Bear Down!

The important thing this tells us is we are almost 💯 going to trade down in the draft.

It would be logical to think that Bates was acquired because the Bears plan on using a relatively high draft pick on a center. Bates would represent depth and contingency as the rookie is developed.

Bates is interior depth for two starting OGs who during the past two seasons have been unable to start 17 games. Bates can also play OC but I doubt Bates is who they plan to start at OC unless somehow it can't be avoided. I believe Poles will look to sign a vet OC because unless he trades that #1 pick or he can trade JF for at least a 2nd round pick it will be tough to draft one. If Poles takes CW instead you don't want him playing with rookie OC.

it’s going to be interesting to see if poles and co really value the center position. many teams don’t. i think Center is very low impact. there is no reason to spend a high draft pick or money on the position.

go through every fifth round pick over the past 2 draft in the nfl. how many of them are starting or doing anything? it would be really interesting to know. a quality back up with you fifth round pick is fine. if you get an average starting center then it’s actually a really really good use of the pick.

  • @creightonc8147

Bates is not a Center he played 2 games there, his entire career. Dumbest trade, FA is just around the corner, you can easily find a backup there without giving away draft capital. Played 35 snaps last year. As a backup he’s fine, you just didn’t need to trade a pick, when FA is right there. They were trying to teach him to play Center, it didn’t workout, he was bad. Again FA is right there with better options. Made no sense. He’s not a starting Center, he does not play Center well, it’s his worst position. Grade F, you don’t waste draft capital 10 days before FA for a backup.

GRADE - F, PolesMIA has failed to meet the moment and continues to BOTTOM FEED in order to SKIMP on quality - Bears need QUALITY O-Line help. Maybe it's the McCaskeys or maybe it's just his inability to understand the NFL. I see this imploding ESPECIALLY after what he did to Roquan, JF1 and now Jaylon ... Bears players are watching and PolesMIA is certainly not for them.

Poles needs to be careful not to fall into the trap many GM’s fall into. First, falling too in love with a person then over committing. Second not taking care of their own when they deserve it. Johnson needs to get a deal done. Not only is he a key piece to the D. Second it sends a message to other players about coming to Chicago. If you don’t take care of your own players who deserve it other players will not want Chicago.

Poles is a joke, what's he thinking. I guess this is the Foundation he was talking about. If we don't draft one of the top 5 centers in the draft, whoever is playing QB is going to be running for their life. Again!!
