I lost weight quickly over 6 months on a low carb diet about 15lbs but still ate 2 slices of rye bread per day, 2 very small portions of pasta per week (no rice) and no eating after dinner until the next day for breakfast. You don’t have to deprive yourself of carbs completely.

Retired at 56. Found intermittent fasting early on. One meal a day once weekly. Twice a year go 48 hours fasting. Try to skip breakfast and eat in a 9 hour window, all my meals. Don't eat anything after supper, ever. This helped my reflux so amazingly. Lost 15 pounds so far and lots less inflammation in my body. Feel like I'm 30 inside as a 60 year old.

My wife and I just love you guys. We retired January 2023, now living in Cuenca, Ecuador. We have been doing intermittent fasting over 2 years now. We have both lost a lot of weight. We eat as many calories just in a smaller window. We also have given up processed foods and commercial breads. The beautiful city we are now living in has great public transportation at an affordable cost. Residents travel on the tranvia (light rail) for seventeen cents. We are currently renting a modern apartment in an elevated building with 24 hour security. We are here 7 months now and love it, it feels like home.

I used to be hypoglycemic and wanted food the minute my feet hit the floor in the morning. I have done intermittent fasting, avoiding sugar, and wheat. I lost 22 lbs and my pain level is down. We are 73 and doing pretty well. Two meals is good for us. We eat at 5 pm and then 11 or 12 brunch . We have coffee early morning. I am so happy, I no longer need food every three hours.

In our early 70s.. We've started fasting and Keto because husband has just been diagnosed with Stage 3 C. Our blood pressure and weight are suddenly perfect after always being too high. But we're doing it for the cancer. We're keto for life now, but we'll let you know if we succeeded beating the big bad C with fasting, exercise, meditation and other alternative therapies. 💗

All good advice. We just morphed into two meals since retiring, as we usually work out by biking/machines 3-4 days per week in the morning. So first meal between 11-12, then dinner about 7 with minimal snacking in between or after. So fasting 12-15 hours. Feels good, weights are pretty good and stable. Mostly fresh food, low starch, no processed food, rare sweets. Also eating out rarely compared to before retirement. Just back from 4 weeks in Europe, lots of walking, also late breakfast, and then modest evening meal. We often share one salad and one entree to avoid the restaurant glut when eating out due to necessity. Rare desert usually shared. Money can’t buy health once you get past the basics.

Brilliant advice Tina and Norm, retirement is not all about the money. Your health is undoubtedly your wealth. We’ve been working on that as well since we retired. Protein smoothies are our go to now for breakfast, not before 0900. Coconut milk, protein powder, avocado, spinach, almonds, turmeric, frozen berries

I retired 21 years ago at 45. Sure, health is everything. I'd rather be homeless and healthy than unhealthy in a beach house. One thing it took me about 10 years to figure out was to give myself permission to walk 2-4 hours a day. I was walking, but felt 2-4 hours was "wasting time". Silly, I know...now. That's when I really felt "retired". About eating and hunger...Take a look at lions in Africa (not the zoo). The pride sleeps and sleeps and then all kind of wake up at the same time. Soon they go looking for food. No alarm clock. So what wakes them up? Hunger. For humans (Westerners) what hunger triggers is a 10 second walk to the kitchen to start eating. That's not the purpose of hunger. Hunger is to get you up and walking around for food. for 99% of human existence that walk lasted hours, even days to find something to eat. So when I'm fasting or wanting to scale back I wait until I'm really hungry and then go for a walk...normally some food shopping. 2.5 miles one way and carrying 5-15 lbs of food back 2.5 miles. I have different routes so normally longer. Hunger goes almost completely away. I feel good, light. I live in Phoenix so normally when I get home water is what I want. It can be another 30-60 minutes before I feel hungry again. The trick is to control how much I eat then. Often fasting, long walk, feeling light, my brain says I deserve a reward. A mistake I often make unless I'm really thinking. The tip of drinking water to fill up never worked for me at all.

Nailed it. My retirement income streams are set. So I can focus on health. This is so often overlooked, particularly mental health. Along the lines of your skipping breakfast, intermittent fasting can be an effective strategy, Often, sugars replace fat. Low fat can mean higher sugar. I’d rather higher fat than higher sugar. And, carpe idem.

It stood them in good stead; my Dad lived way beyond predictions (which I am eternally grateful for), but the early deprivation unintentionally left me with issues.... Good for you taking good care of yourselves, but stay on the right side of that line!

Good advice for any age! Without good health you have nothing. I retired a couple of months ago and now eat twice a day. I no longer have to get up at 5:30 am or have an assigned lunchtime as I did with my job. I also realized I am no longer "stress eating." I eat around 8:30 am and again around 4:30. I might have a small piece of fruit in between if I feel hungry. Going to the gym daily is now in my routine. I am no longer too tired to go. My husband now goes with me. I bought him an ITouch watch to keep track of his heart rate. I think his doctor will be pleased with the results at his next check-up.

Hi Tina & Norm, Health is the number one priority for me, but money in retirement is very important as well. Old age, poor health and no money is not a good combination. Again, we don't have a national health care system in the US, and it is expensive here if you have health issues. I had a hip replacement, a heart attack and am diabetic. So, need money to buy all these expensive medicines. My wife and I did 'Whole 30' diet (not that I am overweight), but for my diabetes. It did help bring my A1C down. In German, they say ' Breakfast as an emperor, luncheon like a king and dinner like a beggar, which means the breakfast is the most important meal there. Happy that intermittent fasting is helping you, way to go.

You are absolutely right, too many retirees neglect their health. I am 78 and we go for a challenging bike ride or hike just about every day - it is important to exercise hard enough to be short of breath and muscles complaining. We don't buy processed food at all, everything is from raw ingredients, I even make our own pasta using a machine, a hundred grams of flour and an egg. We eat a bowl of mixed fruit for breakfast and after every meal. As a result, and a bit of luck, we are both in great health, no aches and pains or stiff joints and plenty of energy.

We also started cycling or jogging before work. When we retired we took our bikes to Europe every year and toured a different country each time, Denmark, Holland, Italy, France, Down the Danube, Switzerland. I have always eatten 1 meal per day with no snacks in between and i am never hungry. I weigh 140 @ 5'9" that is how i have always controlled my weight it is easy for me because I've always done this. If i feel low sugar coming on i drink orange juice or eat a Snickers candy bar and 99 percent of the time i feel great. That is a real good diet for me. My meal i eat lots of protein and lots of potatoes rice and veggies and anything i want for dessert. Usually 2 large servings of everything

Hi Tina and Norm! Alan here from Lehigh County, PA. I am a recent subscriber and highly enjoy your content. The diet that you describe is very similar to what I have been observing the past year. I intermittent fast, exercise and try to watch my carbs. I have become a canned fish enthusiast, particularly mackerel in olive oil. Norm, I like your tee shirt. I had the good luck to see Rush twice, ironically about 40 years apart! I appreciate you both. Take care.

Thanks Norm and Tina. My rule of thumb for fasting is to eat all meals within a 12 window which therefore means 12 hours or more of fasting every day. Good for you for making health a priority; you may want to consider adding annual blood work including A1C, Lipids, Cholesterol (HDL,LDL) and any other testing your physician recommends.

Health in retirement is definitely very important. We also eat just 2 meals a day and we are satisfied that it is helping us to retain good health. We also like to eat eggs often and salmon (wild caught, of course) and sweet potatoes (less starch than regular ones). Also, if you can find cauliflower crust pizza in your grocery store, you might want to give it a try. The ones we have tried have been pretty good, especially if we add a few peppers, etc. to it! We are looking into the possibility of being more/totally carnivorous for a while, too, to see whether that may help with some of our weight loss. We don't need to lose a lot between us but one of us definitely has further to go than the other, so we both go on the same 'diet' for support.

Excellent! I believe that what you are doing with your diet will do more for your health than anything else. I have type 2 diabetes and for the past year have controlled my blood sugar by doing exactly what you are doing, except sometimes I eat breakfast. Today, I have decided to return to intermittent fasting, since I have gained 5 pounds. It is so sad to see people who are financially able to travel, but cannot because they have so many health problems. They are convinced that they need to follow the USDA food pyramid and eat lots of grains and fruit with little fat or meat, so they are always hungry. Thank you for spreading with word.

I have a little wrist blood pressure unit and comparing it to what they measure at the doctors office it doesn’t seem bad. Once day I was feeling a lot of pressure in my head and neck, so I measured my blood pressure and it was super high, so I was going to wait and try again, but decided to go to the clinic where they tossed me in an ambulance and I got the arteries roto routered and some stents put in. They said because I acted quickly there was no heart damage, but my arteries were really blocked from my typical North American diet. So now that they were cleaned up, I have been trying to do better but our food is really bad with all the sugar and salt they hide in almost everything. I have been mostly avoiding meat except Salmon burgers and a little chicken now and then, but I think I am going to take some research trips to Asia and the Mediterranean to learn some better habits. One of the things the doctors told me in my classes was that during the Korean War they cut open a lot of Americans and Koreans and found that the Koreans didn’t really have any artery blockage while the Americans had quite a bit even though they were very young adults and we have only become more sedentary since then with a lot more processed food than was available in the 1950’s

You go! I find that when I eat higher protein and fat and cut out the carbs that I really don't get very hungry at all and 2 meals is very do-able. I space mine a little differently though - just because I naturally seem to get hungry around 10a...so I eat around 10a and 2-3p but sometimes I'm not even hungry at 2-3p so I'll skip that meal too occasionally! So it's good for health - and money! Less food = less body fat and less grocery bills :)

Gluten-free is not a diet or a choice for many people. It is an allergic reaction to wheat. I broke out with hives, and it brought me to the emergency room twice. I am the lucky one for being wheat sensitive for over 20 years and keeping 90% of my diet clean. My couple of friends that are celiac must keep 100% of their diet clean, suffer from stomach problems, and are subject to stomach cancer.

Great advise as always Tina and Norm. Absolutely right that without health all the money in the world means nothing. I understand how the Gluten free diet was a disaster for you. There are some decent gluten free products out there but usually triple the price of regular products. Seven to ten dollars for a loaf of bread that is half the size of regular is criminal. My wife has Celiac disease so gluten free is is a necessity not a choice. Most things I will eat with her but I just can't do any of the bread products. Mostly just terrible. Thanks again. Search for the topic or check out the Oct 17, 2014 Science Alert article *Reheating Your Pasta Makes It Significantly Better For You* for more info, but the gist (from article): "When pasta is cooled down, your body digests it differently, causing fewer calories to be absorbed and a smaller blood glucose peak. And reheating it is even better - it reduces the rise in blood glucose levels by a whopping 50 percent." I also ran across an article / study later that advised this is true for potatoes as well (with potato type not necessarily mattering, but baked having more resistant starch than boiled).

I am a vegetarian for many reasons including environmental, animal cruelty and health. I love veggies so that makes it easier. Losing weight is easy when eating mostly vegetables but if eating the pre-made non-meats, that can cause lots of weight gain also. I tired fasting from 7 p.m. to noon but I got shakey, and dizzy and not feeling well so I took the time down to 11 and mostly it is okay. I did the 7 p.m. to noon for about 5 weeks and didn’t lose much weight, about 4 pounds. Cutting out sugar is really necessary for healthy eating. Good luck with your “diet” and staying healthy.

I am fortunate to live somewhere where I can get outside most days so this is pretty easy and does not require a lot of will power. We don’t restrict our diet but are not big meat and potatoes types. We would prefer a salad for dinner over meat or pasta. Also, we try to eat more in the middle of the day and less in the evenings.

Another great conversation Norm and Tina. Health is always #1 as it determines the quality of our retirement life. Money is important but secondary. Health = Wealth. I have been on a 2 meal diet for last 40 yrs, since teenage yrs. First meal is always late lunch between 1-3PM. My food is mostly home cook from scratch. I am one of those rare shoppers who go around the perimeter of the grocery store - Produce to meat to dairy & then check-out. Anything that is packaged is a turn-off. I avoid processed foods as much as I can. I believe this is also the main reason why I am rarely ever sick - Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, all good. My medical record file is so thin, couple of pages that my family doctor complained that I never see him. I only see him every few years to maintain an active status with him. To this day, I actually don't know how it feels to have a headache.

Great stuff as always. Part of that health is learning strategies during the years preceding retirement on how to relax, how to say no at work, and how to treat your self the way you would your grandchild - with loving care and kindness. It’s the absence of stress, good diet, exercise, and rest that make up the four legs on the table called Life. Stress causes inflammation throughout the body as well as engages the sympathetic nervous system which doesn’t allow the body to digest food which prevents the body from absorbing nutrients and from eliminating harmful waste. That’s a lot but move your good idea back or step to the the decade or two before retirement where the accumulation of healthy habits or otherwise will determine the consequences we experience at 45, 55, and 65. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Most important 1 health 2 family 3 money.. I believe that if we sincerely follow the instructions of our medical professionals as to diet exercise cholesterol alcohol cigarettes on a daily basis, we are doing all we can as to our health. Don’t want to get anxiety ridden rigid and or feeling deprived… retirement is, after all, to be enjoyed.

I've lived the low carb lifestyle for over 10 years now, it has been great. Dropped 24 lbs initially, and have been able to maintain that. You really can't think of it as a diet, but a new way of living.

Great content guys. You cannot overestimate importance of health overall, but particularly in retirement. I always recommend low carb and intermittent fasting for all of my patients and I see their health improved over several months even. We all have to talk much more about that No joy if you retire with multiple health issues and our SAD diet is obviously not helping

Health, for sure. I have had health issues that require a gluten free diet. Meat-fruit-veggies. It is challenging, but I want to be able to walk. Thank you again for the great video. 😊

I fast from 5pm dinner until about 10:30/11:00am. I have my water and maybe a tea. Therefore we only eat twice a day. In the afternoon maybe a cup of tea and a biscuit at 3 to keep our sugar intact. It works keeping our weight at normal
