I sometimes fall into the trap of not doing the things I enjoy (games, watching shows, etc..) only to find myself with too much time and end up doing the things I actually would like to avoid (eating too much, too much youtube, etc..)

This is why you need to replace your habits with new habits. James clear explains this: doing nothing doesn’t feel rewarding. Your alternative must feel rewarding

It is actually strictly necessary to quit video games for ever ? or can I play after 6 months of full video game quiting play like 1 or 2 hours per day

@@Darkaz77 I personally think it's best to quit for 90 days and then re-evaluate after that. Use it as an experiment to learn more about yourself and then if you want to try moderation afterwards you'll be in a better position to succeed.

Hi, I know your post is 2 yo, but I want to ask you about it. It says that you should quit any games for a while, but there are some solo games like Witcher 3 or Skyrim, where you can really spend some good time and chill after work can they be like an exception, they are not the same games as a multiplayer or something that can really eat your time.

He's only quitting because hes being targeted by the game creators or the developers to make it increasingly hard on him by handicapping his gaming account. They do that to gamer Tags that have been around for a while. Change your gamer tag and you'll see that you will do better. Just in the last year gaming has become increasingly hard for everyone. They try and blame it on age it's just they're trying to shoot off the veteran players. I know this because I haven't lost any reaction time and yet games have been come increasingly heard of my gaming account. Just mine If I play somebody elses I dominate. My younger cousins if I play them I will destroy them And they will destroy other people on their stuff but when it comes to playing on my system with my gamer tag the same game the same everything it's as if I've been targeted with people cheating or a handicap.

don't know if you actually did something about it. But in case the answer is "no". I'm here to help. You must download an extension called "hide recommendations". De-activate your youtube history and search history. What this does is making youtube dumb. So it won't know what you are addicted to. And you will find yourself bored because of the content you are being exposed to. And with the hide recommendation, you won't be exposed to any content at all. So you do the history thing in case you deactivate the extension.

I used to have an average of 17+ hours on youtube ._.
I stopped playing video games a few years ago when I started learning web development. Now I'm employed as a web developer and always learning new tech to increase my value. Also started learning the piano and electronic music production at the beginning of the year. Even though I probably spend too much time watching youtube and browsing reddit, I still feel like I have more time than ever to work on and learn new skills. With that said, I also miss diving head first into an immersive game. But whatever, I'm too old to keep fucking around and not develop myself. Video games do eat up a lot of time with little to show for it when it's over.
I stopped for 2 weeks and realized how much time I have. Now I try to fill up with that time with studying and socializing with friends.

I tried to do that with my phone for 24 hours and the realization you get of how slow time is when you’re in the present is insane
I quitted video games around 4 years ago mainly because I wasn't interested in playing them anymore, and when I tried to come back last month, I quitted after 2 days.
This was such a helpful episode! This is probably my third time listening to it all the way through. I give it a listen every couple of months and get something new out of it each time.
I had a similar problem, I loved watching Netflix. It sucked all my nights away and I had no free time from it. So I've had to quit and now I'm playing around with leather and I'm finding much more fun.
If I didnt play video games for a month I wouldn't be that productive. I would legitimately be bored after I did my chores.
This that you have accomplished is amazing, congratulations! You were very brave. And you are very wise. It was very inspirational for me to listen to you. I have a KZread addiction and listening to you has made me want to do a similar thing ❤️ thanks
I have spent countless hours collecting music CDs and at least $7000-to 8000 on one hell of a stereo system but fell into the trap of playing video games to escape. Since quitting I have started going through my extensive CD library and feel so much better, less stressed and reactive.
Truly helpful. Thanks again.
I’m 37 years old, and video games are a big part of my life. Im talking console to pc. It gets to the point that, while im at work, im dying to get on battlefield 5, and as soon as i get home, and hop out of the shower after a long day at work, I just crack a cold one and watch KZread. Lol. I don’t even watch tv for crying out loud. KZread is pretty much my go to. Even when i game, its never more than two hours, or two games of conquest 64 player maps on battlefield. Sometimes its just one.
I quit for a month and it drove me crazy...but now I moderate my gaming time to 30 or an hour a day
I was totally addicted to video game while growing up. From 5 years old on. I wanted to build video games of course, and I built some. Surprisingly, it faded away more and more I was going on my 30. I don't like "hard limit" like "I won't do that". The problem with this approach is: you don't allow yourself to fail. which is essential to learn and even being successful. The other problem: since you forbid something to yourself, you need to think about it more not to do it. If you think about it more, you will be more attracted to do it. What I did is: I do something before playing, for at least 10 minutes. I like to create stuff as well, and most of the time I won't play because I'm totally in the stuff I began. At the end we should only do stuff we really want to do, not the instant gratification thingy. We have the chance to be able to choose how we spend our time, we just need to wire our brain not to go into every dependencies industrial try to put in our way. Sugar is another very good example.

I quit gaming 3 weeks ago. Been a gamer since 9, now I'm 28. Currently I am working on making games! I still have the itch that doesn't go away, but I'm sure it will die out eventually.
38:00 In my experience: things are new to you whenever you experience them, so it really doesnt matter if you experience it after someone else.
You got me when you started talking about "what progress could I make on (x) with 60 effortful hours of not playing the Kingdom Hearts series? " Love the podcast, keep up the good work!
I identify as a gamer but I also barely play these days unless; a) it's the weekend and I genuinely want to unwind; or b) I'm listening to an audiobook and I want to keep my toddler brain awake. This is the reason why I still haven't finished Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag :D As an author I found it easy to nick story concepts from video games. Furthermore, they were a great way for me to learn about things which I hadn't tackled at school yet - Assassin's Creed again with the history. Still enjoyed the podcast, though! Only play games if you want to, not because it's your 'duty' or 'chore.'
I read a joke once: Aliens come to invade Earth and the commander sends his top three lieutenants to each bring back one of the most important things from Earth, so as to weaken it. The first alien brings back the codes to all the missiles and the commander says "Well done, now they can't attack us". The second alien brings back the US president and the commander says "Well done, now they'll be without a leader". The third alien brings back a TV and the commander asks "What the hell is that?". The lieutenant replies "I got something better, I brought back their god".
Really enjoyed
Why can't I see this podcast episode on Spotify? My weekly college town/ hometown commute became significantly more boring.
Thanks for not just making a commercial against gaming. This was a honest video. All other videos I found on this subject just guilted everyone that plays video games into stopping. But this is a real take on quitting!
26:34 just described how my apartment looks 💀 just a lot of weapons
How could i quit playing with my best friend (Pc) ?? He has veen with me since i was 8 years old and never let me down. I take care of it, upgrade and clean it, and he takes care of me .
I’m coming to terms with the effects of video games on my life, (not with any hard feelings of course) and cutting my game time down to size to improve upon hobbies, social life and skills. However I still have an innate desire to create games, but I am met with the moral quandary of “if I need to turn my life around away from video games, wouldn’t it be hypocritical to develop games that could have a negative effect on other people’s social lives?”
We only ever see desk job looking/sounding guys take this experiment. Why not someone like a martial artist or tennis player where a potential effect would _actually_ be visible
I'm 36, grew up with very little access to video games, my parent were able to maybe get me one game per year or so. When Steam started to get big it was the time I also started to earn my own money and buy lots and lots of games, trying to do what I wanted when I was a kid.. However at one point I felt like Martin, trying to finish ALL or Most games I had been buying for years, at one point I told myself "finish what you have, and THEN you buy more".. But that was not the solution to "the problem", I used to feel guilty of having so many games that I couldn't finish. The real solution I found was to just forget about all these games, and from that point on just buy the games that really REALLY caught my interest, and if even after playing them I just wanted to stop and never finish them it was OK. After setting that in my mind I stopped feeling that urge to finish them just because and started enjoying a lot more the few games that really entertained me. The same mentality can and should be applied to things like food (just because you bought it doesn't mean you have to finish it and get fat), movies (just because you got into the theater doesn't mean you have to finish a bad movie and lose your time). Remember that one thing that differentiates addiction from hobbies (in the case of video games) is that if video games take most of your time, you are most possibly addicted, but if you are trying to find some time during the week to play video games it's just like any other type of entertainment to relax, like finding some time to hike on the weekends, to go to the theater and watch a movie, to build a model car, to try photography, read a book, etc. So, drastic behavior require drastic changes/solutions, Martin was drastically wasting his time, so he made a drastic change, it doesn't mean everyone will have the same results.

Outstanding video. Especially when you said "IOWA" anyways dope shit keep it up doods.
What is martin's youtube channel?
Yeah, I've definitely been feeling a bit overloaded and can't enjoy gaming, outside maybe a Visual Novel. I think I'll also pack away my consoles for unspecified amount of time and see if I can get into my older hobbies again. If not, then I guess I'll just clean up my place and maybe see if I can do something to improve my finances, like change my home insurance or electricity provider. Even if they are "boring" things, right now playing a game is about as exciting as cleaning my toilet.
This video is great at double speed!
when I didn't play for a month for some reason when I finished that 1 month I just didn't like playing games for like 2 months and than I started playing again.
The real problem with not going completely cold turkey is that even with moderation you’ll likely find yourself thinking about games all the time, just like Tom was thinking about note taking apps. Even just a taste sucks your mind into it for hours after you’ve stopped. You’ll be thinking about games when you’d rather be engaged in the present or thinking about something else.
Celeste has C sides? I thought there were only B-sides. Man now I'm totally obligated to beat the game to its fullest! ;)

Whooo it’s Monday!
I feel like this could be applied to anything relaxing, yet useless, in my case that would be watching the same 5 KZread videos for comfort and then going on weird insta rabbit holes
Should I quit or keep my gaming to a limited amount of time per session?

Generally I give up playing games when they frustrate me. The difficulty? OK. There's not problem with the difficulty, but this is a question of skills. I hate sucking at games and not. I'm not a casual gamer, because I played so much. Simply I don't know how to be good.
Martin, you look so much like Finn Wolfhard.

I also quit video games and significantly increased my performance in school. I would go on for 2-3hrs a night after work, which would cause me to wake up around no earlier than noon everyday. I believe quitting video games was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Video games aren't bad; excessive use of it is. I am 21 years old at the moment, I've started gaming way back when I was, I don't know, 9? 8? Maybe even less. During my high school years, I didn't have a PC, so I'd just go to a Gaming Cafe and easily spend up to 16 hours there. Now, on the other hand, I have my own PC and limit myself to 4-5 hours a day. Not bad compared to before.
Indeed, playing video games and this channels philosophy don't fit in one life.
I quit video game for 3 month.
