The PAP had decided to turn the presidency, hitherto a ceremonial position, into an elected post with executive, albeit limited, powers. Its new role requires the president to oversee the country’s reserves, approve the national budget, and ratify key civil service appointments. The caveat was that the candidates have to be approved by the government. Therein lay the problem. The president had committed the ultimate sin in Singaporean politics: he resorted to using logic. “You see, if you ask me to protect the reserves,” he explained, “then you’ve got to tell me what I’m supposed to protect.” And why did the government not want to give him the information? “Don’t ask me, because I don’t have the answer,” Mr Ong said.

From what was mentioned, it seems like the powers the president has is ceremonial at best, in this case, we need to ask ourselves, do we really need this role in our system? If there is no president, what do we lose? I know we certainly will gain some tax dollars back, as it is one lesser headcount.

This is quite a norm in the world. The USA is more like exception. See countries in Europe without king/queen or India, Bangladesh, Pakistan. The system it is just the parliamentary republic.

Well, all parliamentary systems are based on the UK model (hence called Westminster system) where the head of state is an unelected monarch that cannot legitimately rule as he/she has no mandate to enact policies or govern in his/her own right in a democracy. Therefore, a separate head of government (the prime minister) from an elected legislative body (parliament) and commands a majority of members in it assumes that role. Now Singapore like most other countries that adopts a parliamentary system doesn't have a monarch (and installing one without any historical context would be simply insane) so instead we have a democratically elected President to assume that role (who has more powers than an unelected monarch). Instead of viewing the cons of the presidency as having limited powers, think of it as having something better than a head of state that has no mandate from the people. Singapore could opt for a presidential system like the U.S. instead of a parliamentary system that it has now, but that too has it's cons. In a parliamentary system, the executive branch is derived from the legislative branch and is accountable to it. It's not the case in a presidential system where the composition of the legislature could be at odds with the executive branch (where you can expect major inconveniences like government shutdowns and the governing party's agenda not being supported and blocked by the legislature, nothing gets done and no one is happy. They could compromise but just ask anyone in the US how they feel about that). Incompetent leaders like Boris Johnson and Liz Truss could easily be shown the door in a parliamentary system where someone like Trump needs to be impeached by virtue of 2/3 majority vote in the Senate and actually needs to be charged with an actual crime to actually warrant it (incompetence is not a crime). So, it's up to everyone which system they'd rather have but I'll choose a parliamentary system where a majority government could be easily formed any day of the week

For the sake of having one maybe? A redundant role. Most Singaporeans see our president once a year at the NDP parade. In the corporate world, i think they are call non-executive chairman/director.

The most important work of a Singapore President is to sign pre-death certificate for prisoners to be hanged in Changi prison. And to obey all government directive. Other than that it is almost like costume and decorative display. Whoever will be the next president, he or she will make at least S$9 million dollars after a 6 years stint.

Do not believe in all these lies of president is not a powerful person. Singapore's president who has votes of Singaporeans in the whole nation or many Singaporeans' votes if no walkover, is a very powerful person. Singaporeans in the whole nation vote for the person, the person will have more power than a GRC. The person can make changes in politics. He/She can change your fate. Vote wisely.
