I retired six years ago and decided to dive into photography. About 5 years ago, I attended a photography conference where you were the keynote speaker. You encouraged the audience to start channels and that stuck with me. So in 2020 I started a channel and it's given me a real purpose. It's definitely helped my photography, for the exact reasons you stated. Thanks!

Doing this switch in your head from photo to video shoot is I think what makes your videos so enjoyable to watch. I often have my mind blown watching all the b-rolls you do. Walking away, walking towards, parking your car, driving away. I'm astonished by how much you focus on that and I would never have the patience to do all that. When I'm thinking that all those times you have to walk back, or stop your car and get out to get camera, I just can't grab my head around it how much additional work this is. I think this makes your trips at least twice longer (if not more) than they could be if it would be just photo shoot. But in the end I think that is the very important reason, why your videos are so enjoyable.

When I discovered your channel, 5 or 6 years ago I started watching all your videos from the beginning because there was a peacefulness coming from them. You hiking to a spot and setting up your tent, and of course taking pictures. And since then I am hooked. I never miss an upload no matter what the subject is ! Thank you for your awesome content and for making me want to go in the field and take pictures... maybe now I am going to start a channel too ! You are so inspirational !

I've been watching your channel Tom for the past 5 years and let me tell you that you your videos have 100% percent inspired me to firstly get into landscape photography and then to start vlogging my photography adventures and record them to look back on. I'm also loving the direction you've taken your channel, the travel photography and the campervan photography trips. As a fairly new YTer it's great to hear your thoughts, good and bad, about growing a channel, it's a very demanding job and it can be a difficult balance trying to get the photography and videography right every time.

Thomas I have been along for the ride for probably 6-7 years. You were one of the first YT landscape photographers that I came across. I do marvel at all the work that you put into making these videos. I think about how much time you take for us to feel part of your journey each week. At this point I don’t plan to start my own channel but who knows what the future has in store. I can relate to the emotions you go through each and every week when you pour your heart and soul into a video and it just doesn’t work. It takes a lot of courage to stick to your original mission for the channel when you see a dip in your numbers. I do appreciate the variety of your topics, it holds my interest and keeps me coming back. I just admire all the work that goes into making your channel a success, I tip my hat to you for your work ethic and passion that comes through in your channel.

Timely advice, for me personally, as I recently launched my own channel. It does take a real effort to shift to a video producer from photographer. I started a KZread channel about a year ago. My channel is not about photography, it is about finding yourself in retirement. I started it because I was into photography. I loved using my camera. And I love tech. It is not easy to get the channel going. One has to commit to doing a video almost every week. Which I have not done. Since my income does not depend on it I have not worried about it. But it is fun to do. I love your channel and watch every video you put out. Don’t ever stop!

From personal experience, the amount of work you put into your in the field videos is so impressive. It really is a complete juggling act to think of everything for the video as well as focusing (excuse the pun) on the photography. When I decided to start my own KZread channel, I had zero experience with video. I hadn't even watched any KZread videos at that point. I just knew I loved landscape photography, searched for landscape photography on KZread, and watched my first Thomas Heaton video...and every video since then.

10 years, wow, I started watching your channel back then simply because it was a relaxing watch I had just become disabled and was struggling with the sudden restriction of movement and pain management. I used to love walking around the country enjoying sites and now I could not walk across the room lol, Daytime TV was a horror show and back then KZread was great to watch channels that I was interested in without the crap back then adverts was few and far between. Your video stood out because it was well presented unlike a lot of other video of people with no idea what they are doing, yours had a story to tell, since then I have seen lots of copy cats but its clear that they don't understand the theory behind good story telling thus not worth watching. Hell I even blew the dust of my old Canon 1D but alas things have never really gotten better so I have switched to Macro shooting instead today I have since lost an eye but I still find the time to kick back with a coffee and watch your videos. So congratulations for 10 years of keeping me interested and for a few minutes each week I can forget about the world of crap I am currently recovering from. Thank you.

Like you say Thomas, the KZread viewers are the older generation. I am just coming up to my 64th birthday and I believe I have been following you from the start and before when you were on Flickr. Way back then you gave me advice on where to park up for the night at Glen Etive and I loved the fact that you were so willing to share the information. I do also understand now why so often the details of precisely where a view is located is best kept to yourself. I don’t share myself if i think that all the individual wants is to bag a shot and then go. When it is someone who understands nature and landscapes, are passionate about it and caring, only then will I share. But this is about you, and your birthday on KZread. If I had to choose a favourite video it was the one when you parked up and took us along with you, blind folded, to the shore. This showed just what a wonderful poet you are with the most amazing ability to find the right words to describe the beauty around you, where others are so often lost for words. HAPPY BIRTHDAY. 🎉

Another fantastic video Tom, whilst I was away with you in Mongolia we spoke about this quite a lot. I was amazed at just how much work you put in, all the stuff people don’t get to see. But I guess that’s the difference between making a KZread video or a very good KZread video. Keep up the good work pal you know I’m a huge fan 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

There is a TON of content out there, and I only have limited time for watching. I consistently watch you, Ben Horne, and Fototripper, but any other photographer KZread channels only receive occasional views from me. I would guess the same is happening to you from other people, and it's not something to worry about, IMO. Love your content, can't wait to see what your summer "challenge" is this year.

Really appreciated this video Thomas. That point at the end about not attaching your self worth to your channel is a timely reminder... it can be difficult when you put so many days and hours into something and it doesn't get rewarded as you feel it should. Personally I have to remember that being outside and capturing photos of nature is such a relaxing, exciting, and rewarding hobby in and of itself - if a video gets views, thats great, but it shouldn't take my focus away from the initial experience.

Excellent advice Tom, especially the point about going out to make a video rather than going out to take a photo and filming it. Your point about negativity probably was the one that will strike a chord with most people we all like to think our work is enjoyed by those who watch the work produced and it is difficult sometimes to take criticism even it may be justified. Your channel is and always will be one to take inspiration and encouragement from so keep up the good work.

Thanks for the tips. They are super helpful and great reminders. Your channel is inspiring and I've learned so much from your videos. We started a KZread channel four years ago and have experienced the ups and downs as well. Our channel "crashed" for no obvious reason too. My mantra became, "It's not personal", but we looked long and hard at why we were willing to invest so much of our time, money for gear, and energy into creating videos about our van life travels and capturing the beauty of the amazing places we go. After a few weeks off, I realized that I can't not make videos. It brings me/us so much joy. So, instead of quitting, I invested in a Canon R6 with an awesome lens and set out to make even better videos. We aren't a photography channel, but we use photography to add a little extra spice to our story. This year we're placing more emphasis on going to places where we can explore photography. Learning photography is keeping us inspired and motivated and hopefully keeping it fresh for our viewers. Cheers and thanks ~Kristina from Colorado

I think this may be your most meaningful video, for me, that you have done. Thank you. When we were instructors together back years ago in Moab, and we rode up to the LaSalle Mountains with Ryan Smith, I thought to myself I really need to do videos to be more relevant. As I started doing more videos, I felt my photography did suffer, and I started losing the joy of what I was doing landscapes for to be begin with. I rarely do videos now, but my enjoyment of what I am doing is back to where it should be. Thank you for you informative honesty! Cheers.

Thank you for this and I know that I will not be thinking of a KZread channel but really enjoy yours. Photography is for me, fun, an escape, an interest and my hobby. As always, an interesting update and giving both sides of the coin. 👍👏

Honestly I’ve tried to film tester videos in the past with an aim of getting the skills and vibe together for a channel if my own, and always struggled. But your advice about distinguishing between a photo or video shoot is so useful, you’re so right!! Thank you

Thanks for sharing this. I am planning to start a you tube channel but I am struggling to create video and photo content while on the shoot. What you mentioned in the video to flip a switch to say that this is a video shoot and not a photo shoot was an eye opening. While I may have realized that, it is a very hard pill to swallow especially when you are facing amazing conditions or light. I will continue on practicing and take inspiration from lot of your videos.

What I like about your channel, and others is the talking you do throughout the video when you are on location. I watched some the other day, they were doing the same shoot in Spain as yourself. I didn't finish any of them because all they did was take photos and added the talking after the shoot in the comfort of their hotel room. For me it wasn't real. Keep up your excellent work.
