Simon d'Entremont and I walk, shoot and talk all things photography in one of the most difficult to photograph locations; Longyearbyen. Simon d'Entremont is a fantastic photography teacher who's KZread channel has helped millions of photographers around the world. It was a pleasure to meet him. It was a blast hanging out with you Thomas and going out for pics. It was a though environment for pretty pictures, but maybe that’s the educational tip in this video…if you want to exercise your photography muscles, go out in a tough environment with only one lens and shoot black and white. It will make you work hard for the shot and analyze every scene for forms, shapes and patterns without being able to rely on gorgeous colours or light to make the shot.

Coincidentally, my latest acquisitions are the Canon EOS R8 and a used Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD in EF mount, used together with a lens adapter. My mission is to show how to create a relatively low-cost kit capable of very high quality results, and this pairing is for nature, wildlife opportunities and it's highly capable, so I can highly recommend it. Other lenses in this basic kit include: *Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD in EF mount, as a standard zoom for general indoor-outdoor photography *Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro, for both macro and portraiture applications, and stitched panoramics *Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM, for low-light and portraiture applications, plus street and candid photos . Altogether, this is a highly competent kit for just knocking around, but could also be used for paying work. (Not recommended for wedding/event work, however.) BTW, I'm a retired corporate photographer of 30-plus years, with 4 large-format film cameras (3 - 4"x5" and 1 - 5"x7"), a Hasselblad film system with 2 "V" series bodies, 4 Rollie TLRs (both "Flex" and "Cord" bodies), many many digital systems, in mirrorless Canon and Sony, D-SLRs in Canon and Nikon, advanced digicams, action cameras, waterproof Olympus Tough digital camera systems, etc.

Yep, Simon reminded me about not being a stickler for ISO100 and Back Button focus on my recent 4 night stay at Pukaswa National Park. It was stormy as heck, but I got amazing wave shots, and Probably one of my favorites with a flock of Sand Pipers dancing back and forth among the surf. I did what he just said, and made myself a part of the landscape and went 'where they were going' they didn't care much about me, and for a minute I thought I was going to have Sandpipers flying into my face, and got some amazing shots because of it.

He certainly knows his stuff, but I think it’s entirely possible that much of his appeal just stems from the fact that he really comes across as a nice, regular guy. He’s not there to endlessly wow you with his adventures or photographic prowess, or to take up one banner or another in the endless gear wars, but to just pass on to his audience what strikes him as good advice based on his own experience. His catchphrase “I know you can do it!” really sums up what I think people like about him as much as anything. He’s inspiring just by being a really nice guy who’s found a measure of success in a field that all-too-often doesn’t produce nice people.

Thomas, never presume people are bored with repeating yourself. Because you're always talking to new subscribers, also repetition will mean you're voice will be in our heads when we're taking pics. Just don't waffle it. Simons quick about it. Step 1,2,3. I still have my driving instructor in my head because he spoke like Simon.

I think that Simon’s videos got me into more photography channels initially. I’m sure I was looking for something specific that he made a little video on - and the fact that he uses Canon was probably a factor as I also have a Canon. He’s a terrific teacher. Now I follow both of you, Nigel, Mads, James Popsys and others. You all have your own style. You have me dreaming of throwing a camp mattress, stove and cooler in my car and just hitting the road to get out with my camera. Gotta ditch my full time job first.

Funnily enough, Simon is the channel I've honed in on as as get back into photography (from the early days of film). That's how I discovered you through him interviewing you... What appeals to me is (pardon my deliberate analogies) that his videos are well framed and focussed subject wise with the correct, useful level of details. He doesn't feel the need to show-off; you're right, he's a good teacher.
