What percentage do galleries take?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Is there a typical percentage or fee that an artist incurs to use their space or services?
Generally, the standard is a 50/50 split.
0:28 The percentage the gallery takes may seem like a lot, but running a gallery is expensive, especially when galleries which sell more tend to be in high rent areas where they can attract the clients who have the money to buy the art.
1:33 Galleries take on a lot of risk when they take on new artists because the artist's work may not sell, and the gallery still has to cover the cost of operations and rent.
1:48 There are also artist cooperative galleries, (you can start your own!) where a group of artists can share the cost of renting and operating a gallery space. This is a wonderful way to build community.

Translation: Galleries want to make as much as artists for doing nothing more than hosting a space to sell. Thank you, I'll just keep selling online and at live events and keep all the profit.

I was reading a blog post from a gallery owner the other day, who posed the question: Should galleries take a 50% -60% commission for your "commissioned" work done privately outside the realm of the gallery." It was an interesting question I'd never considered. The same reasons you mention, were also mentioned, simply because, if the "commission" of art is coming from the customer who had previously viewed your work in that gallery, then the gallery should receive a commission on the sale. Some thought 50% might be too much though, and some thought it fair. Your thoughts? Love your posts, Michele. Kathryn Uster collage Art

I have only done commissions directly through the client or with art consultants. If the gallery secures and negotiate the commission, then it seems they should get a percentage. Generally it's a lower percentage for a work not exhibited and sold in the gallery by the gallery.

@@MicheleTheberge I would agree. I have given galleries a commission as well, even when the work was advertised on my website. They direct them to my site to see other work, therefore, they are selling. I always look forward to your youtubes . Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
