I think the idea was that the outside edge of each star was the same distance from Earth as the Sun is, but yes, if placed where the Sun is now both Antares and Betelgeuse would have swallowed up Earth, and in Betelgeuse's case, Jupiter as well. And yet, UY Scuti dwarfs even those...

@@bernardogouvea No, it's not that the video is wrong, it's that the scenery of earth never changes, for any of the stars. The video only shows what they would look like from our view on earth. In those last stars, they engulf the whole sky as they would. That is the closest the video, as it was set up, to show those stars engulfing the earth.

Alex that is wrong. the 150 million km is the orbital radius of the earth, not the distance from the surface of the sun to the earth. Earth would be well inside the last two stars on it's orbital path. the problem is that the orbital paths for planets on those stars would not be where earths orbit is around our sun. The exercise was to compare the size of the stars to our sun using our perspective from earth as a basis. and in that exercise from that perspective, earth would be inside of those stars.

The largest star shown here, Betelgeuse, has a radius of 820,900,000 km. UY Scuti, the largest currently known, has a radius of 1,188,426,400 km That's almost 1/2 as wide again at 367,526,400 km larger!! Or to put it another way, an extra 528.3 of our suns wider!! Now that IS scary!! :-((

antares, which is still smaller than Betelgeuse, is 2x bigger than the maximum possible star diameter, if the star should still be visible from the earth without the earth being INSIDE of it.. so Antares and anything bigger than 300 km wouldn't be visibble in the same way, because the earth would be inside that star

The last two stars are so big that if they replaced our sun they wouldnt be visible in the sky because they would eat up our whole planet

Thats not the point of the fucking video. Its how they would look in the sky if we were 1AU from them. The radius / diameter of each star makes a circle in the sky of x°. Its just a visual representation. For fucks sake.

Well from the title of the video i assumed that even though the sun was replaced by bigger stars the earth would remain in the same place, not go farther away from its original position whenever a different bigger star was introduced

Антарес и Бетельгейзе, будь они на месте Солнца, никак бы не выглядели с Земли, ибо их собственные радиусы больше, чем радиус орбиты Земли. То есть Земля была бы внутри них!

И таких нюансов больше, а самый критичный - разная масса, разное распределение силы притяжения, а значит, реальная стабильная орбита Земли будет так же на других расстояниях и будет другой орбитальный период. Другое отклонение - звёзды показаны приглушенно по свету, а реально они выглядели бы так же с ярким засветом, с небольшими отклонениями в сторону голубого или красного. На мой взгляд так же интересно было бы смоделировать, как выглядели бы все эти звезды, с Земли, если она бы находилась на приемлимой по температуре орбите. Меньше и слабее звезда - орбита ближе, ярче и больше - дальше, но чтобы количество тепла доходило такое же как сейчас от Солнца.
