That’s a fly-off handbrake, for racing starts. No need to lift-depress button-release: just tug and release the lever and go. Every second counts. It also makes handbrake turns easier, by removing the automatic ratchet mechanism but still leaving a working handbrake. That’s probably why we call it a handbrake in the UK; because it is not just used for parking, but for locking the rear wheels when enjoying some spirited driving.

Best thing you can do to a classic mini is leave it alone. Wrong colour white, wrong colour green, wheels look odd because of cheapo wheel trim thingys. Apart from that. Nice one 😁💪🏼
