As a German my impression is (and it matches with your observations and other expats, also from the America): In Germany you are "underdressed" when you go grocery shopping in jogging pants but "overdressed" when you waer high heels and superfancy unpractical clothes in the evening. So when I leave the house I wear Jeans, T-Shirt, Sneakers. No matter if it is for grocery shopping or going out in the evening 🙂

As a german, please wear whatever you want. I cannot see the neutrals and basic fashion anymore. It lacks so much personality when everyone has the same style. I think many people are scared to wear whatever they want, because you will definitely get the looks and people will judge you, that is for sure. You just need to learn not to care anymore. Also the most people are buying their clothes at Shein, Zara, h&m, primark. As long as you know how to combine everything well, anything can look pricey. I think germans just don't like anything tacky. There was a time when everyone wore leggings everywhere. I think it was from 2012 - 2014/2015. :D We learn about wearing layers instead of one thick sweater since being kids. It's called Zwiebelschichten. :D It's so much easier to control how you feel, when you have the options to take clothes off or on.

German here I lived in the North and the South and I totally agree. We like pastel Colors and down to earth things. Nothing loud. At least not the Adults 😉

I live in Berlin and I feel like here you see just about anything when it comes to looks. Thinking of it I am actually surprised I have never seen anyone walking around naked in the streets or something like that.

Ich lebe auch in Berlin, ziemlich am Rand und im Osten. Und hier ist das nicht so alternativ, lodderig und abgeranzt wie in Mitte, PBerg, etc. Das geht hier Richtung konservativ chic. Aber bei Frauen / Mädels auch tendenziell sexy. Letzteres trifft auf die In-Bezirke meiner Meinung nach kaum zu.

I'm a German living in Dortmund in Northrhine-Westfalia and I see people wear these things here every day. So I think it's really a local thing about what you wear or not.

Dort leben ja auch viele Nichtdeutsche, und dort sind vor allem die Frauen mehr auf Weiblichkeit und Sexiness getrimmt (Osteuropäerinnen insbesondere).

Your thermal underwear and big sweaters may come in useful this winter, when energy costs are high and people may try to cut down on their heating bill. I think it's crazy to have super warm rooms in the winter anyway, I would never survive in a cotton top or blouse in my house.

I'm a goth so I always wear black, I get the occasional dirty look here in Spain, but I didn't in Germany, and let me tell you, I can confirm the toasty warm inside, because I was getting cooked while I was in a concert in Braunschweig last year,! loved the video :)

It depends very much whether you live in a big city where people wear whatever they want, and smaller places where people know each other and the social control for "acceptable" dress is stronger. I have lived in both kinds of places, and in big cities there are really no rules at all.

German here and I'm a huge fan of colors, my favorite brand ist Desigual. But unfortunately, the overall "fashion landscape" in Germany is very basic, pale and monotonous; I really hope, that will change in the future.

I look half dead in pale colours and try to wear as much bright hues as possible. Lots of others do that as well, but mainly in the summertime. Winter fashion is dull in Germany.

I know right? It's so bland and frumpy! Greys, black, beige and navy everywhere, all colors that I don't like to wear, except black as a neutral color. This is why I get most of my clothes online and hardly ever find anything in stores, because I love colorful clothing.

I agree with you for many parts of Germany, but here in Berlin people wear a lot of sweat pants, clothes with holes, logos and neon colours. And of course LOTS of black!

I completely agree. I am wondering I had observed this so often but never consciously. The toned-down bright colors are also one common thing Germans wear.

Hi Antoinette, fellow kiwi living in Germany. I definitely agree with the points you brought up, especially the jacket rather than sweaters. One needs to be able to get layers on and off easily. Quality shoes definitely! Huge brand label I find quite tacky myself... As for not wanting to stand out.. I am a self proclaimed Goth in my mid 30s, I currently have purple hair and wear a lot of unique clothing with a splash of bright colour here and there topped with a full face of vintage inspired make-up (full lipstick under my mask even!)... It definitely stands out even here in Hamburg, I get a lot of looks. But normally (generally older) people will stop and compliment me, say Hallo or Moin with a smile or ask if I am off to a performance, curious as to why I am 'dressed up'... I am one of those that says if you dont want to stand out or draw attention then tone down but if you aren't bothered or want to wear something but aren't quite sure go for it.... In my experience Germans are appreciative of the daring to wear something that they may not and are quick to compliment and unlikely to say anything if they don't! LG and Aroha nui!

@@jabberwocky143 sorry you feel that way! I have identified as Goth for over half my lifetime and that likely won't change anytime soon. While I agree somewhat that there is a prevalence of suicide and self harm in the culture it is not as common as one may think. There are those that may or may not self harm who are drawn to Goth and it may be a passing phase. Then there are those of us who are or will become 'Eldergoths'... Because first and foremost Goth is a subculture based on music! The style is secondary. Art and movies and books with darker spooky or macabre themes are secondary. I enjoy all of it AND wear my clothing and makeup everyday. It is not the shock and disgust look that people may first think of. A lot of us Goths grow older and adjust tastes to suit, I wear black yes. Mostly very feminine clothing. My makeup is more vintage inspired. With colour accents in makeup and accessories. Heavy 'shock' looks and makeup are for going out or for festivals spent around other Goths and alternative people.. I stand out yes. But I wear what I do because I like it, and compliments make me smile because someone else appreciates it too. Goths are not all about dark and depressed. And there is plenty of beauty there that can be seen. Check out romantic goth or victorian goth. And though I said earlier I will say it again, Goth is a MUSIC based subculture. I agree with not wearing neon colours but I do like some pretty floral dresses and I wear some of them even in winter. I do wear some plain clothes such as leggings, T-shirts but like some colours, patterns on my blouses and dresses. I struggle to buy clothes in Germany and don’t do mustardy colours, browns and certain greens... I’m not a big fan of shoes here... I also love practical and good quality shoes but can’t find them! I’ve noticed recently that many summer dresses, blouses and tunics have long sleeves!

As a French it’s difficult because we overdress a lottttt 😅

I have an Irish mother and German father grew up I. Australia. I do not wear black ever.It doesn't suit my very fair complexion.I feckless and burn.Habe had 2 Basil cells on my face removed.I keep black for funerals.

Just got back from my weekly shop in Edeka and this time I took extra notice of the clothes people were wearing. I have to say every colour imaginable was on show and lots of people in what is classed as sports wear. Lot's of cheap sandals and shoes also, let's face it if Germans only wore quality shoes then there wouldn't be a Deichmann's in every town.I think the earthy colours you mention are popular in every European country, especially Scandinavia , in Autumn and winter but in summer anything goes.

Me being a german in the country side, almost only dressing up at home and being afraid to go out and be looked at as snobbish and fake so Jeans, T-Shirt, sneakers and Jack Wolfskin it is 🥲 I mean I like to wear it but sometimes I wish I could dress up without feeling out of place. I am always happy when I am in a bigger city seeing all these well dressed people 😁 ✨ Also it is nice reading comments from people feeling the same way 😊

Of course, in Germany you can wear a big fat Norwegian pullover. But: 1. They are very expensive. 2. due to climatic change, the winters usually are too warm for these. But I remember e.g. the winter in 1986/7: there have been -36 degree Celsius in Munich: Of course we had long underwear and thick, fat pullovers - and stayed outside. But no Norwegian pullover if the temperatures are above zero. What is happening quite rarely in the last years. Nevertheless: IF wearing them, you might wear a nice t-shirt below, so that you can remove the pullover as soon as you step into a warm house. Alas, there's hardly any snow any more in Germany :-(

personally in winter I wear a thin thing below my hoodies so that if I go inside at a friend's I can take it off but while (short) time going outside I put it on without a jacket, really depends on the weather on that day tbh

I totally agree. Same goes for the Netherlands. I was born in NZ, moved to the Netherlands when I was 5 and am 57 now. Personally I quite like colours, but it makes you stand out. Not always in that type of mood. Before people would wear warmer clothes in winter, but it's hotter inside nowadays. I spent a winter in New Zealand 35 years ago and though it wasn't too cold outside during daytime (compared to Holland) it was rather chilly inside.

Really good tips. I have the same experience being in Germany.

I love my chunky sweaters. I layer something light under them and just pull them off when I get too warm. Easy. Europeans complain about the heavy air-conditioning in the US and Canada but they do the same with the heating. It's usually, as you say, much too warm, especially in stores.

Heat doesn't have a point at high temperatures. A/C takes the moisture out of the air so you dont get mold or mildew. A house or building that has been closed up for a long time with out A/C running is 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢. This is of course for high humidity areas.

Why is it so cold in NZ-homes? No good heating or poor insulation?

Probably it also depends a lot on the region... I was living in the North (Flensburg) and I must say some of the things you mention don't apply 🤔 So interesting to observe this kind of cultural aspects btw 😁

My go-to outfit is jeans, a t-shirt, a cardigan, and sneakers. I wore the same thing in the US. On a rare occasion I will wear a sweatshirt with a logo, usually a uni sweatshirt since I teach for a uni. I have worn jeans with holes, but now that I am older, I prefer dark jeans with no distress. I avoid cheap shoes since I walk so much. These are great tips. My tip is wear what you like and what is comfortable for you.

I have no sense for fashion. That's why I wear very bright colours and sometimes even sweatpants to the supermarket, because the supermarket is three houses away and why should I change my pants for five minutes? But people do stare at me.

In winter it can get as low as -20 ° C / -4 ° F, but usually only for a week. A set of thermal underwear can be kept in the closet, just in case. But the last winters have been mild. Often it is enough to put several layers on top of each other.

Lol now i understand my Oma's stories of people talking shit and her clapping back at them. My oma LOVED obnoxiously colorful clothes (it was always a rainbow in her closet qnd in fact most of her clothes were a raunbow on their own) and other things that this list says not to wear (though she was definitely pro practical footwear) She had so many stories of people loudly talking shit in German thinking that she was foreign and having her respond in her mother tongue (she was originally from wilhelmshaven) and their shock that she had a recognisable northern german accent shocked them. Better yet she was a german school teacher so she would correct their grammar too before she walked off.

Im going to germany in may. Im worry now what to wear. But i only wear tone down so i guess im good at color.

Moin.... I like your videos very much, but I just can't agree. I lived in Ruhrgebiet for about 50 years - and I saw many colors (although I usually wear black), everything is possible and allowed. Wearing Sweatpants became modern, so you can wear them at the supermarket - combined with something "not sporty". You can buy cheap shoes for just one season or expensive ones for a longer time. Just as YOU like it and want it. Now I live in a small town in Friesland. Here it is more as you told in the beginning - but no staring, if you wear different things. But one thing is absolutely true: It should be comfortable 😊

I think it depends on the region for sure! I live in Ruhrgebiet as well and I can see how you can dress however you want and nobody stares or judges you. Love this area anyway. But I am sure every Land has their own advantages and disadvantages

Nice video :) I am a German, too and especially since COVID 19 I see more people wearing sweatpants/joggers. I am wearing them too. They are so comfy! Only when meeting someone I would choose something else.

I'm always cold so I wear biiig sweaters starting in the fall in Germany! It sounds like I would freeze to death in NZ

my chunky sweaters are for autumn evenings when it gets darker earlier and already a little chilly even though it is not time to go inside or home, if you are enjoying the last evenings with friends grilling and hanging out in the garden, on the terrace, at the campfire. the chunkyness make them awesome to keep mosquitoes away that come out in the evening hungry for your lifejuice.

I was given feedback at office for wearing White shocks, in in south Germany it does not fit to the cultural.

I'm not caring much about fashion, and I like to wear bright colours, but not two of them or with crying patterns. And jogpants? In the gym! Nowhere else! It depends very much on the season what colours are out. And maybe just now you see more earthy colours than last year it some years ago.

I just bought three items from "Ana Luisa". I really like their designs and what they supposedly stand for. I just wish they were more upfront about where their company is based and where the products are shipped from. I was able to find out that they have two manufacturing sites: in Mexico and in Hong Kong, but I had to dig out the information in their "commitments". I just wish they were more upfront with those details... I hope I'll be happy with their products!

I live in Ballarat Victoria Australia and winters are cold.I only have insulation in roof.My gas central heating died..Has is too expensive now.I wore my flannelette pyjamas in Germany. I felt like a clown and was too hot .Their house are a consistent warm temperature. In Ballarat wr turn heating off eg going shopping due to cost.My family in Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Berlin leave in 24/7 at start of winter because if piprs freeeze cant turn on.

In Neuseeland habe ich gelernt, dass man auch mal im Schlafanzug zum nächsten Takeaway laufen kann, ohne überhaupt eines kritischen Blickes gewürdigt zu werden. Das war ein sehr befreiendes Gefühl. In Deutschland hätte ich das nie getan. Die meisten Kiwis verurteilen einen nicht wirklich anhand der Kleidung, das ist zumindest meine Erfahrung.

Yeah, sweaters are so nice, but so warm. ^^ I wear them instead of a jacket in the colder but dry autumn and spring days outside. Indoors, just nope. (unless they have a zipper to be actually being worn as a jacket)

So they wear very soft colors and simple styles. Omg they would die, here in china where I live, Chinese dress with huge logos everywhere, colorful, is like fashion from other world, no words to describe. And a little bit of that have affected me a little bit, but I don't like too colourful or showing brands, but 'll be moving to Germany, oh no, now what to do with my nice clothes and shoes :( well I'd need be more conservative

Germans are literal thinkers, and they tend to be tone deaf when it comes to the “figurative” ideologies and thought processes (the big picture). I’m visiting Germany for work for the first time on September 8, and I’ve prepared a wardrobe that is somewhere in the “middle” of what you’ve said. Hopefully, I’ll present myself as “interesting” and not “loud” or “obnoxious”. Lol

Don't wear socks with sandals, if you have to wear socks its too cold for sandals.

I would definitely wear socks in sandals. Why? Because first of all my feet are ugly and second of all when I was a kid I had this one pair of sandals that would always rub on the back of my heels. I would never walk around in public showing my feet except for when I am going swimming because they are ugly like I said.

You can wear sweat trousers in publik, but probably people will ask you if you have done sports....

We don't have this heating system either where i came from. i was even sitting with my down jacket on in the room during the first years until i realised that people just don't do this here🙈🙈🙈. But even today i prefer sitting with a thick knit jumper on and turning down the heating. It's more energy saving🤔🤔 and i will be even ok with wearing thermal underwear to save energy. But other people won't agree with me I'm afraid 🙈😬

I am American and have lived in Germany for 40+ years and I agree that the Germans in the areas I frequent from large cities of Frankfurt, Offenbach, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, college towns like Darmstadt, and Heidelberg and to smaller towns and villages. Yes the tones are kind of neutral basically and thinking you are speaking about a specific generation of people. But the trends are leading to brighter colors in the last 10 or even 20 years for those in their late twenties to early fifties type groups. Colors not worn by ladies in their 40s and 50s would never think bright yellows, oranges, and neon blues and should only be worn by children and teens have these colors in sweaters, pants, shoes, etcetera. Speaking of shoes I can not understand how (mostly) women of school age children whether kindergarten or gymnasium (HS) in their 30s+ and 40s+ wearing those Ked sneakers type footwear all the time. I find everything is an age thing in Germany and applies to fashion as well and what one 'should' wear. The environment of Germans women I experience are definitely about age appropriate when 60+, which is now I realize is about retirement age. I frequent many of Germany's catalogs over the years and have now my go to few; Bader, Baur, Witt, Bon Prix, Creation and Sieh An to name a few. Most are of average pricing. Creation is fairly new but styles to a definite younger thinner or those who want to be younger or thinner crowd. Sieh An is definitely lower priced with the basics that can be worked to accommodate any style. Some catalogs not mentioned from earlier years were not fuller figure friendly. But now all have realized the addition of larger sizes brought an huge increase of sales, although some charge more for a larger size and those like Sieh An all sizes are the same price and often a third of the former named catalogs. Most people you describe would be older or at least middle classe people. Working class people, young people and immigrants from eastern and southeastern European countries, they do all the things you describe as not done in Germany.

As for shoes, I would not recommend buying used shoes, because they will have adopted their former owner's shape of feet and might be uncomfortable for someone else. You can still find good quality shoes that don't cost a fortune in stores...

Glad to hear Germans don't wear active wear every day unless they go to the gym. I really dislike this trend which I understand came to NZ from the US. Funny you mention Germans don't wear a lot of colour. I feel they do and that was something that always stood out when they came to NZ. But maybe they have toned it down a bit now.

So true, cheap shoes are tempting. But buying cheap shoes usually results in being more pairs cause they break or hurt your feet. I have spend too much money in Deichmann shoes that I didn’t end up wearing for long. Now I just skip the shop altogether!

Only people who dont have a good shoe maker throws away shoes when they are "broken." My daughter has shoes that were 20€. The sole wore down all the way to the shoe very quickly. I took them to the shoe maker and he charged 10€. The shoes are still going strong 1 year later.

@@jessicaely2521 Yes and no at the same time. I have leather shoes I use for 10 years and I resoled them multiple times. Thats great! But plasticky shoes are not worth it in my opinion. They never fit right, make feet smell and are not anatomic for the feet. Of course this is my experience, you might have a totally different one and thats ok.

Everything you are talking about hits to Bavaria and also to the north of Germany. But in Northrine-Westfalia many people wear cheap clothes, shoes and sport wear. They go shopping in joggers and Deichmann slippers callt Adiletten . Its disgusting.

that's because most of germans don't want to get attentions. the ones that do actually wear stuff like you said. they exist in germany as well. for the colour maybe It's also because of our skin tone because bright colours look better on darker skin. for the clothing with brand names on it, there are people wearing it, they want to show off that they could afford the brand. actually since a few years the young ones really think they need exactly brands to be accepted. the influence of america is pretty big on those. and they are as well the ones who think sweat pants in the public is alright, I hate that. for me it's like someone wearing PJs all day but you would never go out with that as well, right? for the knit sweater I don't get what you mean that's how I get through our winters I need those for cold times. I think there are people that dress like you said in the video but there are as well german people who doesn't. in a city you see more individuality. actually something that could get you to think that we only wear earthy stuff is because the clothing in the stores is like that the last 3 years, but that's just the trend right now in those and a lot just go in there usually store every year and wear what they have. I think COVID has a meaning in this as well. and it's always different which season it is, autumn is always earthy that's right.

So boring, that all the people wear same clothes in Berlin. Like pointing mütze hat. Over shot pants, with socks showing. With Fjallraven packpack. Boring 🙄 boring.

Natürlich gibt es auch in Deutschland Menschen die günstige Kleidung kaufen, da deren Einkommen nichts anderes zu läßt. Richtig und da gebe ich dir vollkommen recht ist, das wir in Deutschland praktische Kleidung bevorzugen, Marken und Preis unabhängig. Da Wohnungen, Einkaufszentren, Geschäfte gut isoliert sind, da es Baunormvorschriften gibt, unter anderem einen Energieausweis für Gebäude, der deren Energieverbrauch ausweist und somit Kosten transparent macht. Natürlich gibt es auch Vorschriften für Temperaturen am Arbeitsplatz und in Wohnungen, deren Einhaltung gesetzlich geregelt und überwacht wird. Also wenn mich Freunde im Winter besuche benötigen sie keine lange Unterwäsche. Für lange Aufenthalte im freien lieben wir deutsche und eingedeutschte Funktionswäsche weil deutsche das Wort Funktion lieben. Abschließend, leider gibt es auch hier immer Menschen die schnelle und günstige Mode und Kleidung bevorzugen, statt nachhaltig und qualitativ hochwertig also langlebig. Second Hand ist nicht so verbreitet und sozial akzeptiert, schade. Mir war das in englisch zu viel Text also in deutsch, sorry.

Not very often I would say. Unfortunately many Germans who dont live in big cities can also be kinda harsh if you dont fit in. That's part of why I don't want to live in a small town or village.
