I know a lot of people are starting their dorm shopping, so here are some things that you probably don't need to bring with you to college and things you don't need to buy for your dorm.
Obviously this is just my opinion, so if you disagree or have something else you shouldn't bring, comment it below for everyone to see!!

Less is definitely more in college. The less stuff you bring the better of you will be. I definitely recommend not treating your college room like your room at home because it is a pain to pack back up for summer.

Depending on your major school supplies is a necessity. I’m pre-med and a bunch of colored markers, pens, notebooks etc make it so much easier to study and to keep All of my work organized!
don’t let this video scare you away from decor! I found that decor and knick knacks/ pictures from home brought me a lot of comfort and made me excited to go back to my dorm at the end of the day.
Another edit: DON’T BUY YOUR TEXTBOOKS RIGHT AWAY wait to see how necessary they actually are in class, and then for sure check amazon or other sites to rent first :) the college bookstore should be your last resort 😂

Would 100% recommend tide pods. They don't use plastic (is a biodegradable material that isn't made of plastic), and when carrying a hefty laundry bag, it's easier to pop a few tide pods into my pocket versus carrying down a container of detergent. The school supplies depend on the school because I have 4-5" ring notebooks for every semester of college I've done (four so far). They are completely full, and a lot of it is notes. I HIGHLY recommend taking notes by hand. There is so much research out there about how it is a lot better for studying and recall during a test. If you have trouble keeping up in class, ask the professor if you can record the audio of the class. I did it on my iPhone and just listen back to stuff I missed (make time stamps on notes, so you know where to go to in the recording). Decorating is also totally up to the person. I decorate a lot. It makes it a lot easier for me to transition back to school, and it makes my space my home. I was on campus as a counselor for a summer program a couple weeks ago, and I had no decorations because I was only there a week. I was so uncomfortable. I really didn't want to go back to my room because it felt so weird there. I was rarely in it anyway but just reminded me how much I like to decorate.

@@martinahedlund7919 I am an older student and have had 0 issues. I've found the only way to mess it up is to put them in after the clothes because they can get caught in the pouch area in front of the door. Mine still tend to explode and clean my clothes still.

@@martinahedlund7919 To say they rarely work would be a stretch. I would suggest asking but to make the assumption they won't work is strange. The only reason tide pods wouldn't work is if you overload the machine, the incoming water is too cold, or you put in too many tide pods (this can damage clothes). All tide pods are is detergent sealed in a water-soluble material.
There seems to be a lot of disagreements about the printer 😂 just a reminder I go to a super big school! There was a computer lab and printers right in my dorm and tons of buildings on campus that were always convenient. If you’re at a smaller school or not in a dorm I can see how a printer could be of use, but for me it wasn’t!
I'll just say that my college in PA is very small and we do get TONS of handouts!! So it really depends!
@ParisBoswell

Madison Hull thanks for sharing!! obviously I can only speak for my school which is really big but good to know for those going to small schools :)
a lot of this stuff is pretty subjective... i definitely recommend getting a printer. it's nice to print from your own room especially if the library/printing center is closed. school supplies really depends on you, your major/classes, and your study habits. and i think decor is nice to make your dorm feel like home, which is an important thing to do bc you'll basically be living there. futons are good for when friends come over or you can bring it if youre staying in another dorm!!! i 100% recommend bringing tide pods as that's just one thing to lug with you to the laundry room vs a bunch of different containers like of detergent or softener,, etc
I got a printer in high school, IT SAVED MY LIFE. and my school had one but it wasn’t always available

i dis agree with like everything she said every school is different. plus everyone hung out in my room and my dorm was cute af
I disagree with the futon. In a suite style dorm, it is very essential. My roommates and I my freshman year used ours all the time but we didn't buy it new one of us had it before college. We used our futon as our couch and when my roommate was being annoying I slept in the main room on the futon and it actually was more comfy than my bed. Additionally, I disagree with Tide Pods, even though they aren't "economical" they are very useful. My dorm's dryers only used them so they are worth it and much better than regular detergent. If the Tide Pod bursts or sticks to their clothes, it's because they aren't in the bottom of the drum. Some people might disagree but you do NOT need a brita. It takes up so much fridge space.
@ashleyt8207

While a brita does take up space in a fridge, it’s really the same amount used if you have plastic water bottles or a gallon of water in the fridge.

yeah I agree. this vid is rlly only applicable if you’re spending barely any time in your dorm room but if you’re having friends over, a futon is kinda nice or at least some chairs, otherwise people are gonna be sitting on the floor cause not everyone can fit on the bed.
I personally disagree about the school supplies point. I feel like it depends on the kind of classes you take. For example, in my physics class I went through 2 notebooks full of notes and drawings and homework in one semester. For my Anthropology class I kept all my notes in OneNote on my laptop and submitted everything in an online portal. So it really depends what kind of work you are doing on that one. But lol I feel you on the clothes one. I literally washed the same clothes every week and would only wear them I used like 10% of my closet.
The handout situation is different for every class, I go to UW as well (im a junior) and as a bio major with my chemistry and biology classes I got handouts nearly every discussion and lab. I had one large binder with compartments to keep each class separate and every time a midterm passed I would take the papers on that content out of my binder and keep it in a folder at home until I needed to start studying for finals! Its obviously different for everyone but just remember you can always get more things you might need after the semester starts so I would go easy on the supplies at first, then feel out your classes the first week and decide what else you need to most efficiently study and take notes!
gonna be a freshman in the fall and this was super helpful! 💕
I completely agree with the bags/purses! I never used a purse until I turned 21 and started going to the bars and would use just a small crossbody to hold stuff like my ID, credit card, phone, etc. But I disagree with the futon. If you loft your beds (which is something most people do at Mich. St.) there's plenty of room for a futon underneath and it's a great place to just sit and chill out without have to be in your bed leaning against a hard/uncomfy wall and it's really nice to have if you have guests or a friend that just doesn't feel like going back to their dorm across campus one night
I definitely agree with the "no tide pods"! They are convenient, but simply buying pour detergent (or whatever its called lol) lasts SO MUCH LONGER I've only had to buy detergent twice since I've been in college, and I'm going into my junior year. all of my friends that use pods have had to re-buy pods 5+ times.
I don't go to school in my home state so decorating 100% helps make that empty room my home. Yes, it may take a little longer for me to move in and out, but it's where I feel comfortable and know that it's my space.
I’m going to be a freshman at your school next year and your videos make me way too excited :))

I would definitely bring a suitcase or duffel bag to keep in your dorm for going home during breaks or weekends or what not. I didn’t and then I had to shove everything I needed in my backpack plus homework 😂
Personal opinion for a different school, having a printer was one of the best decisions I made. At my college there is one library and that’s the main place people can print from and it’s so much more convenient being able to do it from your room. Everyone I knew wanted to use it and regretting not getting one. Obviously different for different schools clearly.

Definitely get a printer unless you have a really good amount of printers at your school. I don’t know how many times the printers at my school broke down or just weren’t working or didn’t print something right. Everything else I definitely agree with, especially the clothes, only bring what you actually wear!
For the printer it’s best to ask someone who’s already at your school! At my registration a few weeks ago the group leaders were current students at my school and they made it super clear NOT to bring a printer because it disrupts the entire dorm buildings wifi and ruins things for everyone hahaha. But again, it depends on your school!
i brought all of my clothes. When I lived in a dorm, it was hard for me to find time to do laundry (especially if you also have a job to go to after class)

I loved having a curtain hanging in front of my closet, but I agree, I do not use throw pillows. I also only used wall decor such as picture collages or a calendar.
Totally agree with these. A printer is the biggest waste of money!!! Omg most schools have libraries or buildings that are open 24/7 and in big lectures you simply don't turn in papers!!!
Hey Paris! I love your videos! I’m a rising senior from Kansas City and your vids led me to consider Wisconsin as a school. I’m touring later this month! Do you think that people in Madison are welcoming to outsiders? I’m not sure what the environment of the school is like. Thank u!💞
“Nobody will see your dorm except you.” This is what I thought, but everyone always comes to my room 😭😭 Especially if you have other roommates. I always feel like I’m living in a damn museum
I went to UW-Stevens Point and we got a ton of handouts! I tried doing online notes but for me hand written was best, I always carried notebooks, folders, binders and a whole bag of pens. It all depends on the school and the person I think.

Necklace is pretty 💫
did you live in a double or triple though? i feel like storage and the organizer tip varies so much depending on what dorm style you’re in
Are futons beds that you lay on the ground anyway I like sleeping on the ground if its clean
I live off campus but my school provides 500 print credits a year that roll over and they’re transferable to other students! It’s very common at my school for graduating seniors in Greek life to give their print credits to underclassmen. I’m very thankful for the generous amount because we have a printer and it hates us 😭😭 it was a free thing from grad night but not worth it at all
My school makes us pay a lot of money to print so while I do use the school ones sometimes for small things I mostly use my own printer. Almost all of my profs wanted physical copies of essays and having to pay $0.10-$0.20 cents a page for a 10+ page paper is not fun and especially when you have multiple papers a semester
What type of laptops do most students use? iPods? Chrome books? MacBook or PC?
I disagree with the school supplies. I’m going into my senior year of college and I’ve only been allowed to have my laptop in five of the classes I’ve taken. Depending on the school and the professors you have there will be different styles of teaching. I have gotten so many handouts and worksheets in my classes (as well as many things online) but I feel that a folder and a notebook or a binder is 100% necessary to have because not everything is going to be available online
Where did you get your shirt from?
I am sending this to my daughter, she was planning on bringing most of this stuff. I always thought it was wasteful to buy a ton for a dorm. It’s 9 months.
My printer in house has never once printed so I think it depends what printer u get
Depends on the school
where’s your cute star pencil case from?
At my college, the laundry machines ONLY work with detergent pods
Futons are literally only good for if you’re someone who has people sleep in your room a lot. My freshman year roomate ended up dropping out for medical reasons but she’s still really close to our friend group and lives close by so we have an air mattress/futon for her (and for when people are drunk and we want to make sure they’re safe and if they can’t make it back to their own dorm), but otherwise? No you don’t need a futon they mostly take up space
I agree with the detergent, my roommate and I bought two jugs of detergent at the beginning of the year and it lasted the whole time and I still have like half of one left
I’m a junior in uni and haven’t used a personal printer. My university gives us a $30 printing credit so I find it a waste to get one and keep buying ink.
This video was amazing. I thought I would need to spend hundreds of dollars. Thanks!
where is your pencil case from?
These tips were very helpful! In my dorm there’s printers everywhere and ik one of my friends have a printer so ima just save money for my tuition😂😭
Tide pods are better because don’t just have detergent it’s fabric softener, detergent, and Stain remover, some even have extra sent (depending on what ones you buy) it’s just easier than carrying a basket and a big thing of detergent and fabric softeners and stain remover.
@ilhuriwjsn4951
5 жыл бұрын
I think it's unessesary, I'd rather be able to control the amount of product I use! Like fabric softer is not supposed to be used as much as a detergent, it also depends on e the clothes you are washing ! And stain remover is most effective when used directly on the stain, not just pour it in the washer
Buying your books early can be cheaper the latter in the summester the more you pay because there are fewer copies available
This video is very informative, thank you. Now I might not even bring a tapestry I'll just bring string lights
I know this is a video for what not to bring but I got an iPad and iPencil for notes and stuff and I save a lot of ink and paper ☺️
I was gonna go to that school 🙂 still might transfer idk though
Thanks so much x
Also don’t get those detergent beads, they get stuck on the bottom of the washer bins and ruin other peoples clothes. If you really want to get seating because you’re lofting your bed, I would get this circle chairs because they fold down easily. That’s literally all you need
“this isn’t MTV cribs” I’m crying lol. So true tho
Great spin on the video!

I do agree to not bring to much decor. but everyone should bring some. People are way less likely to get home sick and develop mental illnesses when your dorm feels like a home and not a prison box
Her eyes are so pretty
Dont go all out. I bought way too many school supplies. In all reality you only need like a binder (or 2 depending on your classes) a couple pens & pencils, a 5 subject notebook (so much better than a single one for every class) and a laptop. A planner is helpful too but you dont need a lot. Another is that you dont need lots of decorations AGAIN LIKE SHE SAID because its a hassle. My boyfriends dorm (shocker i know..) had a lot of decorations that seemed useless while I didnt have like any. Make your dorm cozy for yourself but trust me you don't need to buy that cute pillow! Also most dorms have rules on things you can and cannot bring! Go to housing and find this list or simply ask an RA once at school. Im a sophomore this year and i have a better visual on what i shouldnt bring. Watch these type of videos too! They are more helpful than the "shopping for my dorm" vids.
Would you suggest bringing Tupperware, plates, bowls, cups and utensils?

Things in this video i disagree with: 1 . GET A PRINTER!!! My dorms all had printers but you have a certain spending limit and for classes which require literally so much printing its just easier to purchase your own especially if you're running late you can just print in your dorm. 2. Also, I think decorating is a must it kept me happy through all the stress of your first year of college u may not need super extravagant things but keep it cute keep it fresh! 3. BRING TIDE PODS I LOVE THEM SO MUCH SO EASY!!! I am in my second year now and literally am still using the same pack of tide pods from freshmen year u actually save money especially if you don't know how much detergent to use. 4. School supplies depends on the major I need so many things for my majors so just be cautious some classes are all on your computer but others literally don't allow laptops in class
