What New Year's at my Japanese In-Laws House is like
Spending Japan New Year's Holiday at my Japanese wife's parent's house in Aichi Prefecture. This is what it is like living in Japan outside of Tokyo and how Japanese families spend New Year's Eve together and what happens the following days. Life in Japan can be different than most countries, but as long as your able to appreciate Japanese culture and the differences, it can feel like home. We spend time with Maiko's Japanese family including her sister and new husband. Also, Wolfy meets grandpa for the first time in his life. It’s been a lonely few years for many Japanese families, as they’ve avoided returning home for the Holidays and even this year, many areas urged their city family members to avoid travel in fear of getting sick. Luckily for us though, we’re all able to finally get together and welcome both Wolfy and Junya to the family. As many of you know, from following the channel this last year, Maiko and Wolfy had quite a few health issues so I’m personally thankful that our family was able to get through this year. It’s nothing but struggle city when trying to create content while tending to sick family members at the same time. I can wish for nothing more than a healthy family for 2023.

So glad that grandpa has recovered from his cancer and finally got to meet Wolfy! So cute! Happy new year, Paolo! 🎉 I hope you and your family will be healthy and happy in 2023! 💪

yes, it occurred to me grandpa might have been in some pain, if so he was thinking about others not himself, I liked the home made burdock, a way of the old man showing his sons-in-law, "I am old, but I have value :)"
Maiko's dad is such a sweet individual. Something about kids brings out that youthfulness. Was great seeing it come out of him.
While I understand and respect tradition, I just have to say, I personally hope Wolfy never loses his penchant for showing physical displays of affection towards his grandparents. It warmed my soul seeing him with his grandfather and watching his grandfather in awe of him was just beautiful.

yes, children that age are very adaptable when it comes to languages and should be encouraged
@tevarinvagabond1192
Жыл бұрын
@@wmtarr886 False...children don't learn languages better then adults. The reason it SEEMS they do is simply because children have a LOT more time on their hands to absorb language through their parents constantly speaking, TV, music, and other sources. Also, children have no inhibition and feel free to make mistakes when speaking and learn over time through those mistakes while adults can often be afraid to make mistakes and thus don't speak as much as they should when they first start learning a language. Adults that are actually trying to learn and put effort and time into it are vastly superior
@isaacvolern6704

Adults have just as much lingual interactions, just at work & outtings. Adults use more complex vocabularies also. Nobody ever notes that children have most of their education involving language & parents teaching at home, an active effort.

What I love about Japanese culture is they are so simple in celebrating special occasions like New Year. They just enjoy each other’s company and savor the time they are spending with the family. It’s so nice to see you living life. Not worrying about what could be next. Just enjoying the present moment. - Nikkei Jin from Ph
Nice video, Paolo. Kind of bitter-sweet because it reminded me so much of New Year’s at my own Japanese in-laws’ place…which we couldn’t do this year because mom’s health has been bad and they didn’t want a bunch of people over. But… on the lighter side, I noticed you were drinking a “Dank IPA”, by IseKadoya. That’s actually brewed just down the street from me (Ise, Mie pref). But since you live in Tokyo, I guess you got it at Don Quijote? Anyway, here’s to health and happiness in 2023! 🍻
Great video Paulo. I’m Japanese American and know of the traditions of New Years in Japan. I’ve never been there during New Years, but deeply appreciate that celebration. It’s awesome that you were able to celebrate with family on this day.
The last scenes of Wolfe playing with Ji Ji are so precious!! I appreciate Paola’s cheerfulness as he narrates this video. May there be more memories like these. 🎉❤😊

Man it's so heart warming to see how a family is supposed to act like. It's same for me as my family is quite big, lots of aunts and uncles and we all get along very well.
Did they tell you Japanese New Year’s Day is termed “Oshogatsu?” And it’s the most important day of the year in Japanese society. You had traditional Oshogatsu foods which each have cultural significance (gobo or burdock root = good harvest, kuri kinton or sweet potato/chestnut = wealth in the coming year, kazunoko or herring roe = fertility, etc.) You started the New Year off with the temple visit and eating ozoni, hope you liked the mochi! And your mother-in-law must’ve liked you if she made karaage(Japanese fried chicken), it’s labor intensive.
really loved the vid!
Please make a video about the cost of living in Japan and the recent economic situation there. Lots of viewers are interested.
I love that your voice over inflection and pace on this video is soooo much casual and leisurely. You can tell its much more warming.
