What New Border Patrol Recruits Go Through At Boot Camp

In April, as the crisis at the US-Mexico border began to reach a fever pitch, Senior Video Correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days inside the United States Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico.
Before they serve in the Border Patrol, trainees must graduate from the Academy’s six-month basic training program.
While a majority of the training is focused on law enforcement operations, the Academy also emphasizes instruction in the Spanish language in order to enhance communication between agents and the people they encounter in the field.
The agency has been the focus of intense scrutiny in recent months due to revelations about reportedly squalid conditions at Border Patrol-run detention centers where migrants, including children, wait to be processed and released.
During our time at the Academy, we did not see any training - other than Spanish instruction - that was specifically designed to prepare the trainees to work in the detention centers or to care for migrant children.
This begged the question: is the training that occurs at the Academy adequately preparing the trainees for what awaits them in the field? In a statement to Business Insider, a United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokesperson said that, “The Border Patrol Academy does not conduct training related to detention officer duties… Once a trainee graduates and arrives at their station, depending on their geographical location, it now becomes the duty and responsibility of their station to further train the new agent on local policies and procedures.”
In regards to how trainees are instructed to work with children, the CBP spokesperson told Business Insider that “The Border Patrol Academy trains and teaches agents about policies and regulations related to the Flores vs. Reno/TVPRA. This is the current case precedent that governs children in short term custody.”
The 1997 Flores Settlement requires that immigration officials detaining minors provide food and drinking water, medical assistance in emergencies, toilets and sinks, adequate temperature control and ventilation, adequate supervision to protect minors from others, and separation from unrelated adults whenever possible.
According to CBP, trainees are also trained in first-aid and basic lifesaving measures.

It was about 3 months of training and 2 months of LEO Spanish for those that don't speak the language back when I was going through. I was fortunate enough to go through with a class of all Veterans/ Combat veterans. Its very difficult to intimidate a class full of Veterans, the instructors stopped trying after 2 days and left us to ourselves to march from class to class. Definitely solid training, especially when it came to firearms training.

As someone who lives in El Paso, Texas this isn’t exactly how things are going. Most of those politicians have never even been to the centers or see first hand the issues. It’s not the border patrol officers fault for the bad detention centers it’s just that there are way to many migrants to monitor, especially since they made a large holding center so far from the border there are less officers to control illegal border crossings.

So every meal I was eating so much fried chicken and cheese burgers and mashed potatoes and gravy and biscuits. We had to weigh in every Monday at PT. The instructor says, "Williams! You are the ONLY one gaining weight! How in the hell are you gaining weight? Is running 5 miles every other day not enough? Stop it!" So I went on a semi-diet and lost a bunch of weight. 😆🇺🇸

@@Charlie_Loves no, you are. The reality is that it is not called the Border Babysitter Agency. It never has been and never will be. The facilities they have in place were never, ever, designed to comfortably hold the amount of illegal migrants flooding in currently. It's the most it has ever been, and the people to blame are the politicians and lawmakers who undermine the original duty of Border Patrol by loosening restrictions and openly welcoming illegals into the country without prosecution or deportation. Border Patrol is looking for drug smuggler, human smugglers, and violent cartel members. Over-running the border with illegal migrants is a tactic used by the cartels in conjunction with democrat policies to overwhelm BPA resources so that cartels can push their drugs and gang members through in the commotion. Democrat politicians pull the rug out from a tried and true federal agency, sabotage their job, and then come down for one day to take pictures and make claims of "poor conditions". In other words propoganda. They made a mess, filmed it, and blamed Border Patrol. It is that simple, that is reality. Don't come here expecting to get away with your half baked propaganda and meager insults. If you don't have borders, you don't have a country. Resources are finite and need to be tracked. Cartels are pure evil and allowing them to function is inexcusable. These migrants know better than to come here. Democrat "sanctuary cities" are all bark and no bite and hypocritically refuse to house illegal migrants. These are some _realities_ you need to grow up and accept.

They arent necissarily out of Shape. Round is a shape. For example in the Army for those training to go to Ranger school its always advised to show up meretng the minimum standards but to be a bit overweight because your going to lose a whole persons worth of weight only eating a little less than one MRE a day for 65 days and doing extreme phisical shit round the clock. Its great to be able to run and all that but when you have to manhandle suspect its harder to do when your 120 or even 160lbs. So consider some of that weight is there for a reason.

A couple of my favorite catchphrases I've heard are "STOP BEING WEIRD, TRAINEE!" and "NOTHING WILL EVER BE OKAY EVER AGAIN, TRAINEE!" Business Insider did one of these for each branch - Army, Marines, Coast Guard, etc. In KZread just search Business Insider Boot Camp - they all come up. The Coast Guard is my favorite.

I attended the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco GA in 1992 for the 8PT class. We would be dragassing around the campus in sweats or the FLETC uniform and the BP folks would be marching in formation to and from class, mess hall, ect. Always felt a little sorry for them. They were not allowed to have vehicles on post, so they would be coming up to you and asking "Are you going into town this evening? I need to go to Walmart". Even if I wasn't planning on going, I would anyway just to take them. They had a couple of guys desert in the middle of the night. they left their uniforms (neatly folded) on their bunks with a note "We quit". I hope the guys and gals that I met during my training have all retired now and are not in a thankless job, handing out welcome packages at the border. ICE and the USBP are a joke now under HLS.

Comparing anything to nazi concentration camps demands enourmous knowledge and respect to what they actually are. I do not know how bad the conditions were in those border patrol thingys but I can certainly say that the concentration camps are on another level. If what she says is true then I am truly horrified but I cannot take such a statement seriously without getting a proper historian or someone who is extremely competent on the matter, until then DO NOT COMPARE NAZI WORK with this.

They didn’t call the training facility a concentration camp, they called the detention centers concentration camps. And either way a concentration camp, while it does have a negative connotation, doesn’t mean a holocaust like concentration camp, which is an extermination camp. A concentration camp is a location where people are grouped together and held for a time.

But Anthony Carrillo Aoc was referring to the holding centers as concentration camps not because they hold people for a certain period of time she was referring to them as concentration camps because of the conditions in the camp. Also they are nothing like the concentration camps that Aoc was referring to because you can leave you don’t have to stay there and the staff of these holding centers aren’t trying to force you into labor and torture you. Aoc isn’t even intelligent enough to know the alternate definition of a concentration camp. Aoc and the Democratic Party also passed the law that made the “concentration camps” possible.

I like the judgment part on the firearms training. I wish local police academies would adopt that philosophy. The scenario based training in most police academies is where the subject always has a gun always fights you to the death. Never drops the weapon under any circumstances which is why some new officers go out onto the streets thinking that’s how every confrontation is going to go. Sometimes a person doesn’t know. An officer is around the corner or on the other side of a door. They have to be shown what it’s like when a person is trying to comply or if they were a threat. It’s not always the latter. I once knew a former officer who was told by his FTO “when in doubt start shooting”.
