What New Army Cadets Go Through On Their First Day At West Point | Boot Camp | Business Insider

We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Over 1,200 cadet candidates arrived on campus on a sweltering July morning for "Reception Day." After an emotional farewell with their families, the new cadets took the first steps of a rigorous six-weeks-long basic training regimen.

One of the biggest regrets in my life was not taking advantage of an opportunity provided to me while in basic training to go to a year prep school, then attend west point. Throughout my time in service, every west point officer I met was top notch. Everything came together for me after serving. The GL Bill paid for my college education at UT Austin, which I loved, I bleed burnt orange. But for me, and who I am, west point would have been a better fit.

It all leads back to government contracts which the poor never get to benefit from or profit from. This scene which endangered both men, started as a thought in the mind of United States Senators and United States Congressmen. Back in 1985 i joined the Army as a 19E. ONSUT at Ft Knox and then off to Ft Stewart, GA for my first duty station. I was there about 2 months when I got a letter through the unit ordering me to attend a meeting on post. It was a meeting about attending the West Point Prepatory School, at the time in Ft Monmouth, NJ. I kick myself for not completing the paperwork and see if I could gain acceptance to West Point. At the time I believe I was identified due to my high ASFAB score. If I could go back to my 18 year old self, I'd impress upon him how beneficial West Point could be in a future he could not possibly imagine.

@@sherbaum1985 just rewatched, looked liked what you said was true, but If I heard that and it resonated with me at this distance, what impact would it have with a new cadet, the rebuke or order we were given was “Do not anticipate the word of command!” Initiative is required at all levels of command, “A field marshal’s baton in every knapsack” indeed from my Corps during the First World War there was a lance corporal acting as Company Sergeant Major during a particularly heavy engagement

@@mickbourne3028 I mean the guy said "Wait for (all or the whole?) commands without doing things on initiative" which isn't really the same as what you said. I believe he's saying make sure you have all the information, and act according to that information instead of acting upon misunderstandings or incomplete orders. We are obviously both missing some important context to the situation, but what I assume happened, is he gave part of an order like "Put on your camelbacks and pick up....", some cadets started acting upon those orders preemptively by putting on their camelbacks, and he's saying "Wait for all commands without doing things on your own initiative", meaning wait for me to finish my mf sentence lmao. Plus, the cadets in the video were brand brand new, so taking orders and ingesting all of the information, an important aspect of life in the military, may be something that they've never learned. Also, these instructors are also cadets, so they obviously get some training in initiative throughout the process.

DooBick I didn’t necessarily say I was better than these guys. I can see why you might think that but I should stress that I did almost the exact same thing through basic training, so I’m not in a position to assume superiority. In fact, I don’t even think that the initial “basic training” environment is a bad thing since it gives every soldier something in common and standardized the way we communicate/work on certain tasks. My main point is that forcecomm emphasized how I need to think for myself and get out of the by the book mentality thus the way I’ve been conditioned in the actual military is in direct opposition to the very first lessons everybody coming off the streets who puts on that uniform learns. Hopefully that makes sense, I’m not making fun of these young soldiers just thinking back on my own experience with a little irony.

The haircut, the uniform, the drills etc. are all a part of stripping you of any individuality. The military is all about teamwork and your first lesson is that everyone is equally worthless. It's particularly funny that women got there by screaming for equality, and yet they are spared the training which is designed to make you equal !

The cons of being in military 1. You lose the right of being appeal on regular court house 2. One mistake say bye bye to all your training for years, regardless of what good thing you had done you will most likely dismiss if you messed up 3. Fighting for the rich and losing your life, never. They use you for few years, then throw you out, if you survive. Lately I sat with a soldier in a bar for an hour, he had so much demons in his head from the ecperiences he had gone through, he told me he had more fun during that one hour then he had in two months. Be your own man, not someone else solider.

Thamometer As someone who just went through cadet basic training at West Point, I’ll tell you it’s actually very good leadership experience for the 1st and 2nd class cadets. It’s not just yelling, though there is a shitload of that too, but also lots of good training for everyone involved
