    Thank you for sharing! I used to see wheelchairs as a symbol of all the things that a person couldn’t do, as a sad thing. But when my dad got sick, his wheelchair was a LIFESAVER for him and the whole family. Now I see them as fantastic tools for giving folks safety and independence. Keep posting!

    I have a genetic disability and use a wheelchair for longer distances. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrom and my joints dislocate a lot every day. Yet I have a lot of problems using it and feeling valid because no one can see that I need it and am in pain about every second of my waking life. I feel judged when I stand up to load it in the Trunk of the car. I am scared to use it so I push myself too far and walk with a cane. I even noticed myself making excuses as to why I didn’t deserve it or need it. I have to admit that I am sometimes a bit envious of people like you that have a visible reason for using a wheelchair. I know I shouldn’t feel like this but I just always end up being told to stand up for that little grandma or not being taken seriously when I ask for someone to move their bike out of the disabled seating in the trains. I know sometimes I am lucky to pass as able bodied but it also makes my life so much harder sometimes.

    I have EDS also, go through these feelings everyday, but we definitely have a valid reason. Dont ever feel bad about using the chair. Someone looked at me weird one time and scoffed when I was using the car as a crutch to get from the trunk after I put up my chair. I pointed to my knee going backwards and bent my fingers back. That shut him up real quick Haha

    I just found your channel! When I was a young teenager in the mid-90s, my family moved to Central Russia. There was a man in our town whose disability manifested itself visually in the same way that yours does, although of course I don't know what initially caused his disability. But the area we lived in was like a third world country, and there were no wheelchairs. He still ambulated using his arms. The lower part of his outfit was made of leather, almost like the bottom of a shoe, and he wore thick leather gloves. In Winter, the snow and ice would be deep, and no one had cars. Like everyone else, he traveled by public transportation, on sloppy, muddy buses and trolleys. I was always filled with the deepest admiration for him when I saw him. He was busy and obviously had a regular job. But my heart longed for Russia and other countries of the world to improve in the area of disability access and support. I have a disabled sister, and my parents were very courageous in bringing her there. During the year that we live there, my parents advocated for disabled people, and years later people still tell me that meeting her there and seeing a family that was inclusive and loving with their disabled child was impactful for them, because the Russian society still shunned most people with any type of disability. I hope that things are better there today. Thanks for bringing awareness about your disability to people on KZread.

Unfortunately Montreal isn't very chair friendly, so as university students we ended up on some pretty wild adventures involving her chair in some kind of predicament. I love how you use humor to educate people about disabilities and share with us the cringey things people say and ask you. “Orlando Bloom...” LOL! I’ve always wondered if the reason your chair has no handles on the back of the seat is because you prefer for no one to push your wheelchair? Remember way back when I first met you in person? I was trying to help you navigate the big crowd with 5 fives and offered to push your chair. Educate us on wheelchair etiquette.

  • @Spencer2TheWest

    @Spencer2TheWest

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey G! As always your questions are beautiful, thoughtful, and educational. I actually remember that day! This would have to be a much longer answer, perhaps in a video for the future. However, it really hasn't been a conscious choice. Every chair is different and some have the push handle options and some don't. My current chair does have a bar that someone could use to push, although it's quite low. The main piece I'd say about etiquette for any mobility device is that many folx with disabilities see their mobility devices as an extension of their body. So to touch it without asking would be like touching their body without asking. So, before you touch anything, it's best to ask if they need the assistance and if they consent to you touching their mobility device. That's the short answer!

    I understand how ignorant and rude people can be. As an openly gay man married to another wonderful man I've had people ask who's the woman in the relationship. I usually answer, we take turns in the saddle.

    So patronizing. It would seem respect and religion don't go hand in hand, unfortunately.
