What moss tells us about air pollution
Ғылым және технология
A sprig of moss is growing on a tree in the Duwamish Valley, the most polluted area in Seattle. While that moss might seem ordinary, it has a secret superpower: It’s keeping a record of the pollution in the air - from the trucks, trains, planes, cargo ships, and hundreds of industrial facilities that surround it. Now, a group of community scientists are using this overlooked plant to take control of the air they breathe.
This is the first video in our new science series, Proof of Concept.

Citizen Science can help save us all
Great storytelling and summation! MOSS - Maybe Our Streets Stink??
Very well-made, this was very interesting!
So cool! Loved this.
Very cool video! Nice job Grist and Jesse 👏🏼
This account is going to blow up. Amazing content.
i loved this. I am from the UK. this year i am collecting moss from a mini forest near me so that I can transition from grass lawn to moss lawn. this makes me wonder if more people did this, would it help purify the air more? It could help really congested cities like London
Amazing videos! I’d love to see videos geared towards students looking to pursue green jobs. Just an idea, thanks!
Super cool video. Excited for this series!
Excellent research and production, would love to see more about this in Seattle
Really cool work- maybe Sarah, who is just amazing and bad-ass for the idea and the implementation, could detail a bit about the analytical methods used, or link the paper :D
Great storytelling about an important environmental concern and the power of low-tech data collection to create real change by citizens participating in science projects. Kudos!

Thanks for the support!
What are the substrate used for moss growing? Please help me.
Cool little vid Like to see one done on air pollution from aircraft
Best to spot check industry every year and prosecute and or advise.

Moss has something called rhizoids, which are somewhat similar to roots, but are a lot less complex.
Stupid KZread allowed me to post - then silently deleted! - my comment with URL for Forest Service webpage "The Portland Moss and Air Quality Study". (:-( #KZreadSucks #IHateKZread
Lol
The awful music sounds make it impossible to listen to the content of this video. Why not just have people speak without distracting sounds in the background? Sorry, but I have to stop watcing this.
I want to be surrounded by people that look like me lol
