What measurement is a DIY traveler's notebook cover - plus how to make a size template

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

What size is a TN cover so I can make my own travelers notebook cover? This tutorial aims to answer this and shows measurements for wide TN covers I have made. I also make a paper template for a travelers notebook TN cover.
Sizes included are Pocket, A6, Standard, B6 and A5. All my sizes are for wide covers so I can stuff them full of inserts. If you don't need as many inserts as me you can cut your template to be less wide.

    You can just fold the paper in half and punch 1 hole next to the middle hole and when you open up you will have 3 holes evenly away from the centre hole.

    Hi, thanks so much for watching. Currently in my B6 I buy printable inserts from Annieplans and print them myself. I have bought inserts online in the past from the US but I love printables. I don't even bind the inserts as I find the elastic holds all the pages in place. Just print on a heavier weight paper than standard paper so you can use pens etc without bleed through 🏃‍♀️😁

    I love your covers! What inserts do you use for your pocket wide TN? I’m making my own but I’m not sure if the insert size is 3.5 x 5.5 inches for a wide?

    Hi, the insert size is whatever the TN name size is. The wide just means it is a wide enough cover to wrap around at least 6 inserts. The width of the cover needs to get wider as you put more inserts, dashboards etc inside it. I know some companies have recently developed non standard sizes such as A5 wide with pages wider and taller than A5 but with my covers I'm referring to internationally recognised page sizes. I hope this helps 😁

    Hi I am seriously loving this vid. Thank you so much for making it. I have a question. Do you have a video showing the size of inserts for all of your TN 's?. I am trying to figure them out. But do better with step by step.

    Hi, thanks so much. I haven't recorded a video showing the size of inserts but that is a great idea. I have made wide covers to fit lots of inserts etc. TN insert sizes are consistent sizes. For example, when closed, pocket (also called field notes) inserts are 3.5 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall, A6 is 4.1w x 5.8 inches h (105 x 148 mm), standard is 5 x 8.25 inches, B6 is 4.9 x 6.9 inches (125 x 176 mm), A5 is 5.8 x 8.3 inches (148 x 210mm). A6, B6, A5 are metric sizes so measured in centimetres/millimetres and converted to inches. There are also other sizes like nano, micro, personal.... This may be confusing on the face of it but to work out the size you want to use I recommend cutting paper for each insert size and see if that's a useful size for you. It's best to work out the insert size that works best for you and then make a cover to fit that size. I hope this helps.

    Hi I've enjoyed some of your videos and I was wondering if the leather helps keep the Tn from tearing at the holes. Because the first one I tried with a place mat,I didn't even get to use,by the time I completed it 2 of the holes tore.

  • @itsycrafty

    @itsycrafty

    5 жыл бұрын

    Oh no, that is sad. Was the tear from the hole to the edge of the TN? I haven't had any of mine tear and I don't know if the leather makes the difference. Some of the leather I use is thin garment leather so I don't know if it would make much difference. If the placemat tore to the edge I could recommend moving the holes further from the edge of the TN so the distance from the hole hopefully is big enough to not tear. Another thing would be to insert metal eyelets in the holes to reinforce them. If you don't have a We R Memory Keepers cropadile you can pick up hand held eyelet tools which you use with a hammer to insert an eyelet. I haven't made a TN from a placemat but it's a great rest affordable idea.

    Is the placemat strong enough by itself to use as a cover? It might work better to bond some card or other material to it to strengthen it? I haven't had any holes tearing but myncenter holes can get some stress so i often add eyelets to them.

  • @itsycrafty

    Hi, thanks for watching. Passport isn't a size I use alot but I allow extra around the insert size. The holes should sit on the edge of the insert size and then have extra for the hole to edge of the TN. I'll get back to you with a size that I'd cut for a TN passport in the next day or 2. Cheers!

  • @itsycrafty

    @itsycrafty

    Hi Paula, the lines around the spine are just to symbolise a spine. I like to have my TNs about 1.5 inches wide and that it the space between the lines. As there are 3 lines each line is 3/4 inch from the middle line. I haven't made a solid spine so it just wraps around the inserts but I want to make my TN wide enough for all the inserts, tabs and pens. I hope this helps.

    Hi Lorraine, I'm very sorry about that. I have no idea what is happening there. Sometimes KZread is random and some days my channel has disappeared and you can only see the videos with the direct page link. I think this has only affected some channels and not all. I haven't posted the link to this video anywhere so anyone watching it has seen it from KZread. I can send a query but whenever I have in the past I haven't received a response. What device are you trying to view the video from? I hope we can clear this up for you.

    Hi there. I did pick up your last reply through another of your videos, so thanks so much for that. Yes, its very frustrating, but absolutely not your fault. I can still watch every other video of yours, but still not this one (and trust me, I try 20 times a day). I was definitely one of your viewers that asked you about the template, so was super excited when I saw you had done a video. I see that you now have 30 thumbs up, so obviously others are seeing this. I do understand though that you are wondering if others are having problems also. Its definitely weird as this is the first time I've ever experienced it. Not to worry, I'll just keep trying. Thanks for your replies, I really appreciate them. Big hugs. Lorraine x

    Couldn’t you just put the template over the appropriately sized piece of paper and then pencil in where the holes go?

  • @itsycrafty

    @itsycrafty

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi, I often need to punch the holes through leather or other things than paper and I want to get the holes lined up without leaving pencil/pen marks on the cover so I clip the template to the cover to punch the holes. You can of course colour in through the template if you have something that works on the cover and you're comfortable doing it that way. Either way the template is useful for indicating where the holes go without having to measure every time you make a cover 💕

  • @itsycrafty

    @itsycrafty

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi. Not a silly question at all. I have used Cricut Design Space to create my templates and numbers need to be entered with a decimal such as .7 rather than a fraction. .7 is just a tad smaller than .75 which is 3/4. Also these are just my sizes and you can alter yours to your desire. I just used a decimal to fraction converter on google and 8.7 inches is 8 45/64 which is hard to find on a ruler, so just use a little less than 3/4. 7.9 inches is 7 29/32 so use 15/16 on a ruler. I hope this helps 💕
