What Makes Tokyo's Tower of Terror So Great

Ойын-сауық

Which version of the Tower of Terror is best? How does Tokyo's version tell it's story in comparison to the classic version? Where does the Twilight Zone fit into all of this??
I'm back a lil quicker this time! Every month is probably never going to happen but I'm gonna try and stick to a bi monthly thing. I am a twitter too, go follow me there

thank you so much for discussing these attractions as literary works--you perfectly summed up the way i felt about the twilight zone tower of terror after leaving the ride. it's fun, the theming is beautiful, the work that went into the preshow was spectacular, but even with rod serling's posthumous introduction to the story, it just didn't feel like it had anything to do with the twilight zone. it was an elaborately themed bouncing ghost story. the cautionary tale of hightower being cursed is so much more in line with the various stories the twilight zone tells. it also fits in beautifully with mystic manor over in hong kong, with themes of bizarre happenings occuring due to curses and enchantment rather than any form ghosts or spirits and a member of the society of explorers and adventurers as the central figure.

Thanks so much! I love mystic manor too but I haven’t ridden it yet so it doesn’t feel right to do an episode dedicated just to that. Someday though I will get to Hong Kong and it will happen.

When I was actually at the park, I wasn't fully aware of how incredible this ride was....it didn't hit me until after I was out of the park that Tokyo's Tower of Terror is my all time favorite Disney attraction even more so than Orlando's version.....and I can say the same for Tokyo DisneySea as a whole park....it's unbelievable and I'm promising myself another trip soon

Thanks for doing this great analysis! It helps people to appreciate better the original storytelling of this incredible ride. I love how you touched on themes of morality and colonialism behind this attraction, which when I think about it again, it’s a very relevant message even until today ...

That was fantastic! Tokyo's Tower deserves more love! I totally agree that the Twilight Zone version is not very faithful to the source material. Another thing I feel the Twilight Zone version lacks is something that simply can't be recreated in a theme park attraction. Isolation has always been a facet of The Twilight Zone, a feeling that there is no one to turn to for help or understanding. It's just the protagonist(s) left to make sense of this bizarre, other worldly scenario. No narration to guide them, no prior context or story to allow them to understand their predicament. While the Rod Serling dialog is an iconic aspect of The Twilight Zone, having it explain the story and narrate the ride as if you are a member of an audience and not a character with in the story ends up betraying the what the imagineers wanted riders to experience, to feel like you are on an episode of the Twilight Zone. The fact that you have to experience it with massive crowds doesn't help the atmosphere either (though that is a problem that can't really be fixed at a high capacity theme park.) The Tokyo version implements the preshow and ride narration WAY better. Rather than having some disembodied Rod Serling voice talking to you just because it's the Twilight Zone and you need to know the story, the Tokyo version integrates it into the story by having the ghost of Hightower telling his story and warning them to leave and save themselves. Very cool! Also, the Tokyo version's score is fantastic!

Dude, I don't know how it took me so long to find your channel, but this is great. I totally agree that DisneySea's ToT feels way more "Twilight Zone" than the original. I haven't gone on it, so I cannot judge for certain, but it does seem like this may be the best version. I do think that the Hollywood Studios version still deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest theme park attractions ever built. It may do a poor job of capturing the essence of the show, but I believe that its approach to storytelling and atmosphere is still second to none. Also, I find it interesting that Mystic Manor in Hong Kong is kind of like a bizarro version of the Harrison Hightower story. That one is about being respectful when collecting artifacts instead.

ytctc 1 so so true about the Hollywood Studios attraction. It’s a world class attraction and everything great about Tokyo is still just building off what it established. It also has the superior ride system where you move forward into the drop shaft in the 5th dimension scene! I’d love to do a video on mystic manor because it looks like one of the best Disney rides ever! Haven’t been on it though so I kinda want to experience it in person first

Very interesting video, honestly I saw a comment the other day talking about the same points that you brought up in the video about how the Twilight Zone version of the towers is pretty much just a backdrop. Honestly if you were to remove the Twilight Zone from the Towers nothing really would change from its main story. I honestly love the DisneySea version of Tower of Terror from its looks to its story to its atmosphere I really applaud all the imagineers behind that version. Now to answer your final question about the tower being a self-critique, normally I would probably infer that but...well...**looks at Mulan 2020**

I think both towers are great but I love original and I think it matches the Twilight Zone theme just as well as the Tokyo theme because not all Twilight Zone episodes are about morality. In Little Girl Lost a similar thing happens where a little girl is sent to another dimension and there’s no moral but that episode is pretty iconic

You best to appreciate the original or you would have never got all the copies in the other parks. While tokyos is great theres no denying the fact that all other towers built since orlando are mechanically identical and nothing more than cheaper scaled down versions of the original. What they all share is the original ride system copied from Orlando. There is something much more special about the elaborate retro trip through the hollywood tower hotel in orlando. Tokyo's is great as far as theming. But the actual ride is a scaled down version of the original. Same goes for mission breakout. Great ride but nothing more than simple drop towers. Orlando is a much better and more elaborate ride system

I highly doubt they will do that, keep in mind the Disneyland Resort in Japan is owned by the Oriental Land Company. They just licensed the Disney theme from Disney in order for them to have their own Disneyland. They have final say on what is approved or not so Disney can't touch them
