What Makes This Singer Great? Geoff Tate - Queensryche
When I think of Geoff Tate I think of someone who was incredibly innovative and who made music that definitely raised the bar.
As frontman to Queensryche, Geoff pioneered a progressive sound that was led by his big, thick, wobbly vibrato.
Also known for his incredible tone, Geoff had a knack for being very theatrical and melodramatic in his approach.
Able to easily shift from singing light to heavy, he used good mixed voice and could hold those long, epic notes.
As I explore what all I think made Geoff great, I'm going to dive into a few of his performances to get a broader feel for what set him apart.
I'd love to hear what you loved about Geoff so please be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Back in '1999, my old band was talking to the 2 ladies running the merch booth at the Queensryche show for quite a while. Turns out it was Geoff's wife and tour manager, Anita. They then asked if we wanted to come meet the band and hang with them after the show. We did and then got asked to hang with them again at consecutive shows. After hearing our demo,we got offered a 2 week spot to open for them. All was working toward it and we were ready to go......until our band had internal fighting and broke apart. At least Queensryche and their whole crew were awesome people to hang out with. ....

The thing about Geoff Tate is it isn't just about the range of his voice, because LaTorre and other singers can hit and sustain all those high notes Tate has to be cautious about nowadays - but it's the tone and timbre and emotion of his voice. It's like the difference people can hear between a newly made violin and a classic Stradivarius.

You compared Tate and LaTorre. Tate is a baritone and was capable of hitting the E-5, LaTorre is a tenor therefore it is much easier for him to hit that E-5. Tate most likely can not hit those notes anymore, but there is more to it than just notes. Tate sings with emotions that very few can. Without Geoff and Chris queensryche is nothing more than a clone of iron maiden.

Geoff is magnetic like a ball of frenzied energy always moving. His mannerism on stage is captivating. Of course his vocal range is amazing but his true gift is his dramatic stage performances. Its not overstated either he balances his high energy kicks spins etc with the softness of sensuality. He's very imaginative in his gestures. At times watching him in concert makes me feel like I'm in a full balcony theater watching some great opera to make me cry. No other heavy metal band has this effect on me. Geoff Tate is one of the most powerful vocalists of all time. It’s not only about his amazing vocal range and his beautiful unique voice. I was already blown away by Tate's voice but not only was the whole show unbeliveably great (Operation:Mindcrime in its entirty with the video screens telling the story and the light show, etc) but Tate himself was amazing. Too bad you couldn't show clips from the Operation Livecrime release. I've seen him live 11 or 12 times now and Tate is usally pitch perfect live and he impossibly sounds better the longer he sings. He's the only singer I know of who is consistantly performing 1.5hr+ shows. He still has it in his early 60s, even after decades of constant touring. The past few years I've been seeing amateur video where he's hitting those mythical heights. Can't wait to see him live again!

I last saw them in 1993. When they played live, it was like listening to their recordings. I saw them live three times, each concert had security everywhere. Last concert was in Peoria, IL. I was so disappointed with the crowd, it was s like no one knew how to yell for an encore. I was just about escorted out for not remaining in my assigned seat. I would work my way to front center stage section, would be ok until I woulbstand in the chair to sing and dance. The crowd was just bumps on a log...not too enthusiastic and not too energetic. But the band was spot on like always. Shameful that two people screaming for an encore couldn't make it happen.

I saw Geoff Tate on his tour closer and on his birthday (1/14/23). He just owned that stage and even though this was the closer for the tour still could belt out the set strong from start to finish. I was so very impressed that he's kept up his ability into his 60's.

I remember listening to Queensryche at school and feeling like I was the only one who knew about them. Then they hit my town on the Rage for Order tour and suddenly everyone was wearing the logo. Yeah, I was listening to them before it was cool! I recently introduced my wife to their '80s music and she can't get enough of Geoff. Silent Lucidity introduced her to the band, and it was great to expand their audience, but it's far from their best song.

Saw Queensrych, in 2006 they did a "Operation Mind Crime" Show in Knoxville Tn . The show was most excellent. Tate and Halford and Dio . Are the best Opera style singers .. Dio is part of the "Operation Mind Crime". This is the only show I have seen of Tate .. Awsome range and showmanship. If concerts come around again in this day in age .. I will go see Tate again .

It was like they were telling a story through song like Pink Floyd.

Thanks for doing Geoff Tate, Ken. Queensryche is one of my favorites, and I agree that *_Operation: Mindcrime_* is a true masterpiece of Progressive Rock. My first Prog bands were RUSH! & Kansas at age 14, so QR is in great company. In this age of "instant everything" I still relish listening to these bands' albums (well, lossless FLAC files, lol) from start to finish. Great video & it's a highlight to hear you sing some of the vocally gymnastic parts during your commentary. It's obvious you love the music & teaching. Kindred spirits, we are. 🎶 🤟

@@kentamplin - This unfortunately will not get many views or huge likes, because still today, Fates Warning (note: Are considered the 2nd founder of Prog Metal next to QR) are very very underrated, if its the years with the unique vocals of John Arch (and now with FW's sister band "Arch/Matheos"), and then with Ray Alder. Ray had a great range for the 1st 5 albums, and then it matured (personally, I think better than Tate) but still solid vocals from Ray on EVERY album. But I have to say, Arch still has that range from his early days, even after being away from music for quite some time, and at 61 years old. Ken - please checkout the catalogue of FW, and Arch/Matheos (2 albums so far), and Ray Alder's years with the band "Redemption" and his solo album. I'd link my own FW Playlist, but this comment may be yanked by Yt unfortunately. I've probably seen Fates as much as QR (from Rage of Order, to Q2k), maybe more. And FW dropped a new album last November (2020).

I have seen Queensryche 5 times with Geoff Tate as the singer once at the World Arena in Colorado Springs in 2000 I think once at the Ogden in Denver, twice at the Filmore in Denver and the one time they played at the Colorado State Fair Grounds. Along with the band their music always captured my imagination. Empty Room is one of the first songs I remember hearing from them when my uncle had Queesnsryche in the tape deck in the truck taking us camping. They have been on my playlists from then on. The story telling abilities really speak to me, some of my favorite songs are not their most popular Lady Jane and Someone Else from Promise Land, Anybody Listening from Empire, and Breaking the Silence, Speak and Mission from Mindcrime. among others of course. I am sad to see that Geoff Tate isn't with Queensryche proper any more... I think Todd La Torre is pretty good too and appears to have the package to do a good stand in. I need to see Queensryche live with Todd La Torre for my final opinion though; and I still need to see Geoff Tate with his new band too. anyhow thanks fro your time. nice show case.

Queensryche was introduced to by back in 88 or 89 I think when Operation Mindcrime came out. I saw them with Def Leppard. I was blown away. The music, lyrics and vocals made me realize this guy is a master at his craft. It deserved so much more recognition. It makes you realize real singing talent has to be worked on. Sure some people have natural ability but you don't get to that level without years of practice. Anyone can build a tree fort. This was the Sistine Chapel. If you want to be this good you gotta work at it. He did the work.

I still have my calendar from 1985 marking a concert they played in the Bay Area but my parents wouldn’t let me go. I did see them twice - once in 1988 with Metallica at the Cow Palace and once in 1991 at Day on the Green with Metallica and Soundgarden. I discovered them on MTV’s Headbangers Ball when they played ‘Gonna Get Close to You’ and was instantly in love with Geoff Tate’s voice. My very 1st CD was Rage For Order. When Operation Mindcrime came out - everyone said it was better than Rage For order and I refused to believe it…..: and then I heard it and was blown away! It’s a true masterpiece and I can’t play it loud enough! I was disappointed in Empire - I thought they sold out and was very ‘ commercial’ however the song I do love on that album is Jet City Woman. He is one of the most underrated rock voices - in my opinion.

Ken, I saw Queensryche twice on their Operation: Mindcrime Tour open for Metallica on their And Justice For All Tour in Hartford,CT & Providence,R.I. back in 1987. We were able to meet Metallica Backstage, but they wouldn't let us meet Queensryche. Both Nights Were Phenomenal ! 33 years later this past February at a small club in Fairfield,CT We saw Geoff Tate & Friends perform the Rage For Order & Empire Albums in their entirety. At 61 Geoff still sounded great. I was expecting maybe some loss of range, control, or power, but you couldn't prove it to me. They didn't get all the Guitar Tones right, but they tried really hard on all the arrangements. It was a really enjoyable night. Little did we know it would be the last show before COVID-19 Locked Down Every Show For Over 6 Months Now.

Operation Mindcrime is still one of the greatest concept albums ever made. Crazy how Geoff would alter his vocals to fit the feel of the song...the needle lies is a perfect example. Geoff sounded like he was strung out on the drugs, portraying the character of the story and conveying that to the listener...to eyes of a stranger at the end of the album...cooler and more mellow, almost talking to the listener and accepting the fact they’re condemned to a mental ward for the rest of their existence... I think I remember hearing some Rumor/fact that for the lady wore black, he actually did sing the song by a solo lit candle so he could get the feeling and emotion just right. Don’t know if it’s true but wouldn’t surprise me

First album I bought was the The Warning and the VHS live in Tokyo.. Mr Tate's voice transcended my imagination to the stories they were singing about. Not a lot of singers are able to do that (similar like Dimash). His vocals on Rage for Order are from another world like watching (listening) to an amazing SF movie. Mindcrime was also out of this world especially that epic collaboration with Pamela Moore. After Operation mindcrime somehow the magic was gone,... But still a great band.

Love Queensryche got into them when Rage came out, I saw them a couple of times, one show he hit all the notes and the other he sang a lot an octave lower but was still professional and on pitch. Being a singer in a metal band at the time it was reassuring that he was human and maybe needed to rest or lay back a bit during that performance. He always had a clear tone to his voice back in the day which I liked when all the gruff growlers were starting to take over on the metal scene.

Tate lost some of his vocal range and power here, for whatever reason. I heard because he smokes, but when I went to their concert in 1990 or 1991, he was incredible. They did the whole Operation Mindcrime in it’s entirety, for the Empire tour, at the Long Beach Sports Arena. Since they were now headlining a tour, they were able to play all the songs, and still do several songs on Empire, plus their other best songs from Rage For Order, Warning, and their self titled EP. I love how Queensrÿche used a basketball hoop stand, like the video for the song “Best I Can” and Geoff made the layup both times I went to the concert (Friday & Sunday).
