What Makes The Ford Barra So Good?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ask any Australian what's the best engine for making a ton of power and most likely a Ford Barra will be mentioned most of the time. It is relatively unknown to the outside world, but Australians and New Zealanders know it very well. Its engineers knew it was going to outperform any competitor. What makes it such a beast?

My dad pulled 1,430,000km out of his Barra before the piston rings started to leak. A hone, some new rings and bearings and some basic maintenance has now made it my little brothers car. Now it spends its days travelling farm to farm so my brother can sheer sheep all over the outback.

Great synopsis! They're a sweet engine straight from the factory, but little appreciated (and little understood) elsewhere in the world. Historically, Europe liked their small cars with 4-cylinder engines for their narrow, twisty roads and high fuel prices..Americans preferred their V8s because of their cheap fuel prices and long, straight highways...and Australians had long distances to cover on poor roads, so needed something more efficient than a V8, but more robust and torquey than a 4-pot. And so we stuck with the venerable inline 6 as the best compromise.

GM The N/A's are ok for a daily commute, you can put boost through'em, but i wouldn't bother. Set of 3.27 gears & a decent tune will result in more than ample power for daily situations. The turbo can handle 2.73 gears, the N/A & lpg variants have such capped acceleration due to them s**t gears. The only FG falcon that actually got final drives done correctly was the EcoBoost and it's 3.27 rear end.

Also the first falcon six to introduce alloy heads too :) Myself i have an 84 Xe falcon ute with a 200 crossflow and i just love the motors so much for being robust, simple and sounding great and my mate has had multiple Au falcons for skid pigs and the cars mightve been wrecked but the motors still run beautiful and and never miss a beat.

Some N/A's reasonably low kms are selling for only $200 ... The cost of getting them to the U.S. and getting upgrade parts to turbo them though is pretty high .. I'm surprised that someone hasn't made a big business of it yet though because once you sample a Barra it's no going back .. That said the father of the Barra is the amazing SOHC Intech /VCT .. I'm also surprised that as they date back to 1988 the whole car from the EA Falcon to the late EL's from 1997 can be imported to the USA without the import tax what is essentially the Barra . Due to the 25 year rule in America the latest model Falcon in 2022 you can bring in without paying a fortune of tax is a 1997 model . In The bottom end/block of the Intech and the Barra are pretty much identical ..The Barra top end is where all the action happened ...Many Intech/VCT SOHC 's have seen 800,000 to a million kilometres with minimal repairs and they can be upgraded for huge power due to the incredible blocks ....

I was in 3rd gear accellerating to 100km/h and it let go when I up-shifted. Oil pump is a must on these engines before any other work is done.. Also, good tyres. I had an aluminium trayback and it hooked and it didn't spin even in the wet..

The Aussie 250 six started in our country in the 1970,s and the Barra is the last incarnation of it, in the 1980s we redesigned the old 250 and in effect put a Cleveland V8 type canted valve heads to on it first in cast iron then alloy, mid 80s we put fuel injectjon on it then in late 80s a hemi head with single over head cam like the 427 cammer ford V8 then 2000s came the double overhead cam vvti motor then the turbo was added, but it was making waves as the six was now faster than the the new ford double over head cam 5.0 in the 2017 Ford Falcon.

The most defining feature I think is that it's very easy driving because the torque from idle is so high. It's also pretty efficient under load, I remember a local magazine compared a lower powered Barra falcon against the commodore with it's direct injected 3.6, and from Sydney to Melbourne used less fuel. The writer put it down to the fact in hills and under load, it didn't need to revv. Honestly, the old commodore Buick v6 was like that too.

Had a couple of vehicles with these engines, great reliable engines. Never thought anything about them at the time but sadly you don’t realize what you had till they’re gone. As with all sixes, no matter what you did you can never give them a good note, just a roar.🇦🇺

My bf ute is 843rwkw on 35psi. Brilliant engines The original twin cam 4liter was supposed to come out in the el falcon days but Holden kept the old pushrod v6. Then Ford was going to to the au Still Holden kept the ecotec. When the ba came out Ford finally put it in the car. I remember working at Ford going to the development factory in Melbourne seeing a el falcon with a twin cam turbo. Broken front and back windows from the torque though.

If I understand you right Ford help off on the twin cam until the BA because Holden stuck with the Ecotec? I still remember reading about the XR6 Turbo as a teenager. Exciting times

@Ducko Until mightcarmods built the barra powered Cresta, you could buy a barra at ANY junkyard for about $200. Nobody wanted them.

Aussies has it so unique - mostly plane and vast terrains, that's why utility cars still a huge thing there. like trucks are so popular in US, or small cars in EU.

Yeah there a awesome motor. And if you cab get one at the right price there're the best money to power motors in my opinion. My older brother is going to swap a fpv barra into his ed falcon. And put a half cadge on to make it a bit more safe. Now they are around $2,500 to 4,500. And they will only go up so if you need one get one now.

Canadians love inline 6 motors too, why can't we have these here :( ford would sell even more f150's if they had this turbo inline 6 instead of the Ecoboost and it just flat out makes more sense than a v6

Towards the end of production they did make a dedicated gas version that I think the gas was injected as a liquid into the engine which produced more power than the petrol naturally aspirated Barra from factory 198kw
