It’s one of the very few remaining 3D fighters as well. But why exactly is it so popular and so hype? Well, everyone has their reasons, but there are clear patterns and explanations for many of them. So if you ever wondered: “What’s the deal with Tekken?” this video is for you!

Tekken is a difficult complex game, but it gives you feeling of control. So many moves that gives you a freedom to do what you want. 10+ frame moves allow you to see what is happening, read your opponent moves, build your own reactions, build some strategy. Endless self improvement.

#1 thing for me and my enjoyment of Tekken is the intuitiveness like was mentioned. Basic buttons of left/right punch/kick, add directions to get permutations, press in sequences to get strings, and order strings for combos. It just makes sense and allows a player to pick any character then through experimentation build a basic skillset with no prior knowledge.

As a vet from T1: Tekken's appeal is simply in the characters and gameplay. The games are actually SUPER EASY to pick up, but super hard to master if you want to go competitive. From the old days, you could always just pick up a character that looked neat to you and have fun with them on a casual level super easily. I remember having matches with random people, even complete newcomers in Tekken 3 days when I had two games behind me, and they were able to still have fun with me in a casual environment. It's so good at that draw. The music of course adds a lot too. It's just a great triple combo if you ask me. The music, the characters, and the fun gameplay. It just works, and I love it to this day.

The limb based combat gameplay and Tekken 4's story are the main reasons I play Tekken. It took until Tekken 8 to finally match 4's story, and thankfully the gameplay in 8 is better than 4, finally proving you dont need one or the other- you can have both good gameplay and story

@@quekZo95 Tekken complexity is just beyond comparison in my opinion, there's just so much you can do with just 1 character. For example, Kazuya has very few moves compared to other characters, but when you mixed it up, and change your strategy, it becomes complex as chess. Now imagine over 50 characters....I played SF, Tekken, and Chess, but I'd say Tekken is more relatable to chess because it's so complicated, just thinking about all those plus minus frames advantages, 50/50 mix ups, oki set ups, combos, walls, side step, counters, faints, parry, risk vs reward, punish, mind games, etc...just like chess, the higher your rank, the harder your opponents get online and not only do you have to learn every move from every character, but you would have to learn every mix up, follow up, and set up of that character. The execution itself is very hard at higher ranks and it's easy to mess up a combo and easy to lose once your opponent figures out your game style and habits. It's like chess on steroids.

I literally got into Tekken because of Tekken 8’s soundtrack. A few months back I would listen to music from Tekken games like Sparking, My Last Stand, Kitsch, Karma (Electric Fountain) and so much more. To me, Tekken looked a lot more easier than any other 2D fighter I’ve ever played (Injustice and Mortal Kombat) because you can escape some combos by sidestepping whereas in 2D fighters you can only block and parry.

What makes Tekken the best 3D fighting game? Hard to say but the soundtracks is one, the aesthetics, character designs, lore, world building, gameplay to name a few. I've been investing in Tekken since Tekken 3(which is my first Tekken game to play) and I never looked back. Don't get me wrong I've played KOF, DOA, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, Injustice and Mortal Kombat and I've enjoyed them but Tekken hits different and Tekken is and will always be the fighting game I'll enjoy the most.

But I like having a fighting game on the side. I was looking for a fighting game. Debating on Street Fighter 6. Then I saw the trailers for Tekken 8, and I decided to wait for that one. I love tekken after going from someone who just gamed for fun to competing. I ended up going to my first ceo tournament and I did better in tekken then I did in sf at the time which I thought was gonna be my main series. After that tournament I went home and studied I learned about tekken everything from lore to characters to moves to music. Everything. I then become know as the tekken guy for my job and more bc I worked in a game room and students and more would come in thinking they were the best at tekken. I got so good at the game I always had my arcade stick that was custom and built around tekken. Knee lever and all. I ran the tekken seen not only building it up the more people came by but even becoming our local tekken champ for the college when we heald locals. I even stream it on twitch and still compete even now. It's hands down my favorite series and game ever at this point. It's saved my life, honestly. I will always love tekken.

What makes Tekken unbeatable for me is that it's so damn fun to watch and play. Even for people who are not into games, seeing the characters fight so precisely and technically is awesome. That got a little distorted in Tekken 8, but still. Now, about soundtracks, Tekken 3 is still king. No other Tekken game came even close to that vibe. Edit: It also used to have AMAZING single player content and game modes... and hopefully it goes back to that too, without losing its current multiplayer quality.

One button for each limb just make a sense and it's the one 3D game that I feel plays closer to a traditional fighting game, Mishimas are like shotos for example , and I love that it's impossible to master Theres always some thing new to learn. Also I the character designs all motion captured by masters of the styles they represent.

Having played the Tekken series more than any other ones I got my hands on (Dead or Alive, Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Virtua Fighter and Under Night In-Birth - didn't play all of the entries, but enough to compare with Tekken), I have to say not only the soundtracks is the factor for why I got into the series fast (minus Tekken 7...dubstep is killing me! Except "Hatred" and "Desperate Struggle"), but one can easily pick up Tekken series and learn the basic gameplay mechanics compare to the other titles listed above. The other titles tend to use the direction buttons differently. Yes, they all serve as making an alternative move to an existing move when you only hit one of the right-hand buttons. But some of the other titles tend to overuse the direction buttons (for me any), like certain commands cannot be performed unless you do a half or three-quarter spin on the direction buttons or the left stick and this is like a common move for a character! As a person who sucks at button mashing, this is a challenge, also why it's hard for me to do a few EWGFs (Kazuya's "Dorya" move) in a row. Yet in Tekken, this is optional and only appear for certain characters' special moves that I only saw once in a blue moon in online matches. Even Kazuya's EWGF was hardly seen unless you go into higher ranking matches. Jin/Devil Jin and Reina's version of EWGF was hardly seen in Tekken 8 so far as well. Also, instead of having one button for guard, one button for throws, one button for punches and one button for kicks in some other titles, these buttons correspond to the four limbs, which is right in my alley. I can easily main a character in any Tekken games while I can hardly pick a main in other titles. Even though later Tekken entries overly focused on juggles (air combos), but it's still alright enough for me to make fluke wins with my Jack-8 for example all the way to Flame Ruler in online matches simply for playing mind games and do non-juggle moves at the right time (I suck at juggles that are over 6-7 moves).

In my opinion it's the roster and the moves. Specifically the way the moves are flashy but mostly not as flashy as 2d fg moves... i.e there's a jumping uppercut that reminds of SF's shoryuken, but it's still not as exaggerated as a srk (and as time went on SF only created more over the top versions like the Shin Shoryuken super). That helped to make TK stand out compared to VF since the beginning. My reasoning with this comment is exactly "what makes TK appealing"... not only what makes TK stand out among 2d fgs but also among all other 3d fgs. Like, it doesnt work to mention attributes shared by all other 3d fgs like the large moveset, 3d movement, more realistic animations, etc. That's why my conclusion is: the roster and the moves.

Despite that you dont have to relearn a lot of stuff like for mortal kombat or other fighting games except street fighter (at least that I know of). And last but not least it's button layout is totally logically: left upper button left hand, right upper button right hand and the same goes for the lower buttons for the legs.

I really love the big movesets. I love having 100+ super fluid martial art based strings. I literally go into practice with each character and check out every single move on the movelist 😂 The reason I want to play fighting games is to do cool martial art moves and have an epic dance choreo with my opponent. I get very underwhelmed by MK and SF cause everyone has such a limited moveset. Those games get boring and repetitive eventually, plus MK is stiff asf. I wish every fighting game in the future could have large movesets like Tekken. I also love the big rosters. T8 launched with 32 and will soon have 36 characters after S1. T7 now has 51 characters. I wish every fighting game could launch with 30+ characters. Every character has such a unique well-developed fighting style with lots of martial arts focus. The game has lots of depth and variety. There is lots of dynamic force behind each attack and lots of improvisation rather than repetitive gameplay. No one plays the same character the same way. There's many different playstyles you'll come across. It's very easy to learn by mashing and that makes it more fun than other fighting games. When you mash in Tekken you come across the most fluid and badass moves cause they actually have tons of branching intuitive strings. In other fighting games when you mash it's a bunch of repetitive shit. Tekken movement and defense is more interesting than any other 2D fighter I've played. I prefer 3D over 2D. We need more 3D fighters to compete with Tekken cause there's already so many 2D fighters rn. Hope to see Virtua Fighter 6 release soon!

I believe this aspect really helped to highlight TK's welcoming attribute since the 90s. And TK making that point clear in the 90s, the arcade era, was probably vital to grow the game. That was a notably more social period with fans gathering around the arcade and/or around a friend who has the console version, etc. So this natural accessibility of TK's controls (not an engineered forced accessibility like these modern games) were perfect to be introduced in that era. Meanwhile (1994-1995) all 2d fgs were evolving into new "sweaty" forms of their early selves. It was the birth of Killer Instinct, which then influenced the combo system of MK3 and onwards. And afterwards the birth of Marvel fgs and KOF, with their long and broken combos (KOF being more demanding with strict timing). And more 2d fgs starting gaining supers, with more strict input window than today and more strict cancelling rules than today, etc. And actually they kept getting more sweaty with each sequel. So that was another reason for TK (and other 3d fgs) to surpass the fame of 2d fgs in the late 90s and 00s. Like, the 2d side of the genre totally fell down in the 00s, while the 3d side wasnt much harmed... SC2, T5 and VF5 being important releases from the 00s, while classic 2d fgs were buried (SF) or on life support (MK).

I dropped this game after 1 month since release. My brain just can't handle 3d environment and different frame data system, comparing to 2d fighters, also heat system is too overwhelming. It's sure an awesome game and I'm happy for players, but i personally prefer to go back to sf6, which in my opinion is the best modern fighting game on market. Kinda sad, since i pre-ordered ultimate edition of Tekken 8 and just couldn't play it for long
