    I flew with Milan for a couple of days while I was down in Omarama! Absolutely magical experience and really developed my pilot skills as well. Just got to make sure the coffee machine has beans in the morning, otherwise there’s an issue…

    @@PureGlide You should really get the taste for coffee, I went through the first 35 years of my life without it and it really is a fantastic thing once you have the taste. Tea is great first thing in the morning but a good tall white with a couple of sugars will really give you that afternoon boost and it tastes like chocolate as well.

    I had the opportunity to fly with Milan for two days in January 2019 when Glide Omarama was still operating. Milan was great to fly with and introduced me to mountain flying in the Southern Alps. On day two we scratched around over The Lindis (a high priced lodge) in the Ahuriri valley for over an hour. We finally landed in a paddock that was next to the stables for The Lindis' horses. We were eventually towed out and were able to climb into the wave. We flew up to Aoraki (Mt. Cook) and back to Omarama. If you're a glider pilot Omarama has to be on your "must do" list.

    Multiple glider tow is not common nowadays and maybe a bit more dangerous, but can be done in a safe way. @Pure Glide; Tim it would be a good topic to cover in one of your vids: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n45tlKaYeKXTYtY.html

  • @PureGlide

    Yes this is called a dual tow. Nothing dangerous, we train how to do them. Usually used when we need to transport gliders to another site, as it's more efficient than doing 2 separate trips.

  • @PureGlide

    @PureGlide

    Hey, in New Zealand roughly between $500-1500 NZD per year depending on what needs doing. Usually around $1000 NZD/year for annual inspections ($700USD). Occasionally things like seatbelts need replacing that might bump up the price a bit.

    @@PureGlide also how much is a tow up to your normal release altitude, and what is that normally? 6000ft?

  • @BruceHoult

    @BruceHoult

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DarrinTaylortails "normal" depends on how much of a cheapskate you are. If I'm paying for it then I normally go to 1500 to 2000 feet above the ground (sometimes only 1000 feet), and almost always get away with it , especially if there is a nearby ridge with a little wind and a bit of sun on it. The only flight I've ever had in a Duo Discus (usually I fly DG1000) was at the Chicago Gliding Club near Joliet. I shocked the local instructor by releasing tow at 800 feet AGL, and struggled for a few minutes but got away for a nice 1 hour flight around the local area at 4000 to 5000 ft. Towing higher definitely offers a better probability of finding usable lift before having to land! Depending on how high you go, tows typically cost around $20 to $50 USD.

  • @BruceHoult

    As a NZ glider pilot I was actually shocked to learn that Glide Omarama didn't have Part 115 certification for many years already, and the $10k to $15k one-time cost I've seen quoted to get it is absolutely trivial compared to the several million dollars worth of aircraft fleet they had and the salaries of the people working there.

  • @PureGlide

    @PureGlide

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes that's why I was keen to make this video, to support Milan with his venture, and show that Omarama is still a good destination. Gavin is still there flying too his own glider, and towing is also available for any visitors. Cheers!
