What Makes Davion Mitchell a LOCKDOWN Defender 🔒

Спорт

We don't see defense at this level often, so I wanted to make sure we get a full look into what makes Davion Mitchell such a lockdown presence defensively.

    Davion's uncle shared how Davion prepped to face Donovan Mitchell. Family got together for lunch on game day. After lunch, no one could find Davion. Uncle finally found him in his room, watching tape on Donovan, studying his tendencies, tells and moves. Did this for 90 minutes. Day before, Davion studied Clarkson. Then asked his coach Luke Walton (who coached or played with Clarkson, I forget) for more info. The man is a beast in the gym, but his dedication to learning to be better is scary. Scary awesome.

    Michell is what you called a great defender. He leave you with little room to breath when he guard...like right up to your face. A lot of NBA players that people considered great defenders don't even guard that tight. Usually, they leave a feet between themselves and the offensive player, that's because they're still aren't that quick enough to follow the initial push by the attacker. Mitchell is so quick that he can guard you right up on your face and still keep up with your drive because his lateral movement is so quick. His recovery and balance is so fast, his feet is set before the offensive player get a chance to shoot and by that time, he already strip your ball.

  • @Quicktwosteps

    A lot of crab shuffle in the NBA level. He's elite. 😮 I do pick up games and guard everyone when playing hustle(21). I can't get a rebound so I just end up guarding everyone. 😅 with defense as priority, my gluteus medius would cramp. Then, on the next day, I'll be limping.

    @byanymeansbasketball Question: When you said he takes little hops on defense and pressures the ball handler at 4:21, how would you counter this type of defense as a ball handler? Because in those clips it seems the retreating isn't working. Thanks in advance!

  • @COOLSAUCE21

    @COOLSAUCE21

    2 жыл бұрын

    Take one retreat dribble, then do a quick spin move. If that isn't working (as in, defender is good enough to anticipate it and moves in to draw a charge), call for a screen like the guy in that clip does. Or push with your off arm like Jordan loved doing.. or trip him up using your feet.. or go Harden mode and draw a foul.

    Anticipating and drawing the charge on the man you're guarding is risky, as it requires an alert ref. I used to do that a lot, and it felt 50/50 on whether the ref would call blocking or charge, even off of a clear push off by the guard. Granted, I was playing high school level or college rec level, and the refs are usually inexperienced and under-paid. And, who knows, maybe I was selling it wrong. I didn't watch much footage of myself.

  • @ninjachannel007

    @ninjachannel007

    2 жыл бұрын

    Stay tight on the guy who is setting screen so he has no room to go over, or he has to fight through it at the very least. If the second defender comes up, blow past him (assuming it's a big man and you're a guard). If he sags (backs off), you can either split that gap or pull up if you're confident in your shot. The key to a good pick and roll as the ballhandler is to bring your defender into the screener however you can. A jab step away from the screener before you go towards him will make most defenders forget about the screen for half a second, or just give them too much to think about if their teammates are warning them about it (which they should be)

  • @COOLSAUCE21

    @COOLSAUCE21

    You could call for a screen, or use a spin move. Or if you want to... Push off with your off arm (like Jordan's game winner over Utah), or trip them with your feet (watch some of Lance Stephenson's top "ankle breakers"), or draw a foul (Harden is the best example)
