Today we are going to take a look at BMPT-72 Terminator, not to be confused with BMPT Terminator, since BMPT Terminator is a discontinued predacesor of BMPT-72 which was made on T-90 hull.

    2A72 is too outdated, in addition to it there are no projectiles with a remote fuse. Too light splinters... The only reason for using this gun, the availability of ammunition and even if not outstanding, but good characteristics. For air defense, there is a Derivation-air defense 57mm self-propelled gun with adjustable projectiles.

    @@elusive6119 Yes, that's true. 2A72 is not the right auto cannon for anti/drone and anti-atgm, but i think the Terminator as a concept-vehicle needs to evolve to fill the roles i mentioned in addition to anti-infantry/light vehicle. I like the 57mm for long-range work, and in addition, the evolving threat (ie, drone development direction) appears to be drone swarms/suicide drones/combat drones operating in 20m-1000m space. There is also an opportunity to extend active protection against ATGMs from right beside the tank to several hundred meters out. Terminator concept (tank-support vehicle) would fit this role if it were better equipped.

    the issue is that radar doesnt like small shit. though we got good at predicting rounds, but most radar design for that only goes out like, 5 to 10 meters. atgms arent that much larger than a 120mm shell so at most youre looking at maybe 35 meters of distance between the radar spotting it and it hitting. 35 meters may sound a lot until you realize that most atgms travel anywhere from 80 meters a second for the first generation to 300 meters a second for modern ones. meaning at 30 meters you have a tenth of a second of reaction time. an automated gun platform wouldnt even react that fast. drones would be easier to destroy but the problems goes from reaction time to can you kill it before its explosion is to close and will still be knocked out. small drones would be harder to hit but need to be closer which they can do with ease because, well, theyre smaller and harder to hit. or theyre big bois and "easier" to hit but dont need to get as close. also these bigger drones could be armed with something like a hot missile or a tow and you got even bigger problems now.

BMPT-72 was late, its development did not meet the requirements of the military, so it did not receive orders. The usage niche is too narrow.

    Dear RedEffect. You talk about the BMPT-72, and you show the BMPT-2. The BMPT-72 is an (export) option for countries who like to upgrade their old T-72's with a new BMPT turret. Russia did not buy the BMPT-72, but they bought the BMPT-2... A normal BMPT with the new ATGM-launchers (like used on the BMPT-72). The BMPT-2 does have the two 30mm grenade launchers left and right of the driver. Those (Green Russian) vehicles are mostly in use by only the Russians, some are send to Syria for testing. Only the BMPT-72 doesn't have the grenade launchers because it is ment for only T-72 hulls, no modifications needed. I love your content, but as a vehicle recognition instructor, I thought, I might point out this point. Sylvain.

If your on the battlefield and your supporting tanks, you could pick up or add 2 crew or soldiers have them safe in the crew compartments and they can also fight now inside the vehicle. That was the reason for those 2 postions in the vehicle. Not because they NEED 2 crew to operate grenade launchers.

The only drawback of the BMPT-72 are the twin 30mm guns, they could be replaced by a single more modern autocannon with a few millimiters more of caliber and that could switch between AP and HE rounds.

    Militaries train their troops to identify the specific tank and target its weakest points, the most general method would be a top down attack such as the javelin. In all other cases it would be required to target the specific known weak points of the target in question which removes the "generalistic" capacity.

    Why is everyone making jokes about the production numbers? It is a new type of vehicle, not an incremental imorovement of an existing one. Unless you need to fight a war soon, you want to start slowly. Learn how to deploy it and workout all the issues. Then at version 2 or 3 you ramp up production. The same goes for the T14. Why the hurry to replace an existing installment with unproven technology?

  • @WardenWolf
    @WardenWolf3 жыл бұрын

    This is a major improvement over typical IFVs because it's based on the T-72 tank chassis and thus has a respectable amount of armor. Probably nothing short of an actual tank will be able to kill it. Most IFV concepts are horribly flawed, though; you have vehicles able to kill a tank but easier to destroy, so they're going to be a target even over the actual tanks. Plus they also function as an APC, so they're effectively just rolling coffins. This, at least, both has good armor and is a dedicated fighting vehicle so it lacks these drawbacks. This is a great way to recycle old T-72 tanks into modern war machines.

    Protection on this vehicle is pretty good, but the fire power is extremely lackluster thanks to whatever the hell the constructors were doing instead of what they were told to. 30mm autocanons installed on BMPT can't effectively fight the infantry, nor effectively penetrate any modern NATO ifv's. The ATGM's should have been honestly replaced with Kornet missiles, yes they are wired and mannualy guided, but provide much more penetration which is lacking in Ataka D missiles. Overall, it's a very good protected, extremely expensive vehicle that can't effectively support tanks or infantry

BMPT-72 was offered as upgrade and chiper evolution on T-72 hull for the Russia as well fir any other country that opererate T-72 tanks. In basic, as far as I have seen till now, there are options for the export version - T-72M or T-72 M1 hull is tha base. The engine coul be changed to an modern, but it is an option only. Also, there is an another option, known as BMPT-72 mod 2017 with addon armor in bags, that was tested in the Syria.

    I disagree with the removal of the AGL systems being a good thing ( even if it saves 2 crew positions) ... this takes away a lot of the versatility such a system would have. Its considered a support vehicle for tanks against infantry. And infantry hides behind stuff when tanks approach to deny line-of-sight ... so what is the Terminator supposed to do then ? If it can lob grenades behind cover and into trenches it can cover more tactical situations. And also peeking out of you own cover to get in a shot risks your own destruction vs. ATGM armed infantry despite the relatively heavy armor it has. If the west would build a similar system it should have a single autocannon, light machine gun, ATGMS and at least one 40mm AGL alongside the AC in the turret. Heck every IFV should have AGL´s to be able to stay in hard cover and still support their dismounted infantry from safety.
