This was fun. Tense scenes and/or hilarious scenes push a cozy toward 5 for me!

I love when a cozy is set in a state or region we don't often see. Like Alaksa, Montana, Maine, Ireland/Scotland, etc not that it means I'll give it 5 stars but it just helps the book/series stand out. Same thing as when the cozy isn't a food, craft or book one. A hobby or setting that feels unique. Love a found family setting over the MC being alone or only interacting w/ family or coworkers. Give me roommates, childhood friends, surrogate grannies, etc

Completely agree about the mood, and it’s important that the book sets a great atmosphere and vibe. So, seasonal cozies are great! Love the small communities with close knit characters and the charming jobs of the characters. Extra points for yummy food descriptions, too, but the mystery has to be well thought out, for sure!

I will give a cozy a 5 star if the main character is likable and positive, it has a good animal companion that is in the story a lot and involved in the mystery, if it has a good sweet romance (no love triangles), likable and supportive side characters, good family and/or friend relationships, it has a good cozy setting or community, growth of the main character, law enforcement works together with main character, community working together to save another community member, the mystery is good and plausible, the characters do research on town and or suspects, short chapters with good hooks at the end of each chapter, and a unique element in the story, characters, setting, mystery or reveal.

One thing I'd love to see more of in cozies is a B&B or hotel setting. Also where are the soap/candle making cozies 😂 also a holiday themed cozy is always a good time.

I like when books describe food. I have realized i like cozy elements in non cozy books.

Things that can tip it to a 5 are great seasonal/holiday vibes, a logical not last minute mystery solution, a sleuth who finds things out by being friendly, likeable and not pushy and inappropriate. I would honestly rather see more dogs included and less cats. 😂 Don't shoot me.

Have you read the Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson? Takes place in an exclusive school for exceptional students (a bit a la Hogwarts although not paranormal) and yes! In the third book the main characters are locked down in a Vermont snow storm! Really well written and the twist is, well, devious!
