What Made The Lawrence Brothers' Education So Unusual | Ep 68

This week the Lawrence Brothers are joined by longtime family friend and educator Rockland “Rocky” Glenn. They dig into Rocky’s experience of being the brothers’ on-set teacher and his career in education, what makes his school different in order to help kids become high achievers, and how to think about our future with AI. If you’re a regular listener, you know this is a topic we’re passionate about!

The Lawrence brothers are so pure, and I don’t mean that in a condescending way. I mean that they are an extinct species that need to be protected. They are sweet, kind, wholesome, gentlemen, with amazing values. Anyone that gets to be their friend or partner in life is very lucky ❤.

The line of this show for me is, "You don't cherry-pick differences." So true. I never understood that, when people will celebrate certain differences, but then run down anyone different from those particular differences they choose to celebrate. Everyone should be celebrated for who they were created to be. IMHO. ☺

40:58 Guys, this is why I love you all. I totally agree with you, this is why I chose to homeschool my son. I didn’t want him to be stuck in a room sitting at a desk for 6 hours a day. I am homeschooling him so that I can curtail his learning to his needs. He is so curious and fascinated with the world too. And he doesn’t like to sit down and do a worksheet, but I can make a game of math and he learned all of his sums and times tables before he turned 5. He learned cursive before he turned 5. He can read cursive writing. He’s almost 7 now and he’s well beyond what he would be learning in public school. He would be bored in regular school which I also think contributes to what is labeled as misbehavior in young boys. If they’re bored because they’re being forced to go at a slower pace for other children, they will struggle to pay attention and sit still. If you are going at their pace, it’s much easier to hold their attention.

Respect! Respect! Respect! To the mother of the Lawrence brothers. Ms Donna. Who had a determined mindset to give her sons nothing less than the best education, Life's foundation. Ms. Donna and education go hand in hand, so much so that she influenced the best young tutor who was hired for her sons to be come a great educator. Many years later, the educator has a school that one of her sons kids attended, and Ms. Donna teaches at the same school. How fantastic is that. Hahaha, no one asked for a narrator, but I just wanted Ms. Donna to know how very special she is. The educator 💕👏👏👏

This episode made me cry. Both of my boys don’t “fit in” a school setting. One brilliantly athletic and artistic. He taught himself how to ride a bike at 2. My other, incredibly intelligent and curious. He’s 5 and refuses to accept that he can’t read yet. He’s not waiting for anyone to teach him, he pays attention and practices on his own. Both have been kicked out of school because they don’t fall into line and do what everyone else is doing. I’m a single mom and don’t know what it takes to be a man, but I’m doing my best to celebrate their brains and how intelligent they are. I actively look for ways to encourage them and help them learn in a different way. We practice respect, honesty, active learning and authenticity as the highest standards. We need schools like Rocky’s. I don’t live in fear… and I also do worry about my boys falling into the cracks of society.

I am a mom of 5 young boys, the oldest is 9. I homeschool, and more specifically I "unschool"...which means we don't do anything that looks like traditional school. They are child led. I do SOME organized learning, but for the most part each day my boys play, they educate themselves, they dive into interests and passions. And guess what, they do it! They are self motivated. We are a family of learning, a family of curiosity a family that breaks open the broke device and see whats inside and how it was made. These boys get to build, jump, dig, play, bake, cook, draw, write and learn from all around them every day all year round. Life is school! Love your Pod! A recent fan.

Just recently started listening to the pod da pod. I can't stop listening it just feels like being part of a healthy, loving family, but THIS episode especially just hit home from me. It was my middle sons first year of middle school, and it was rough. He was going through medication changes with his ADHD and sometimes those take awhile to get in to see the specialist and the school was just down our throats about him being medicated, he can't sit still he cant this he can't that getting phone calls every day at work which then came to the point they said he could only come to school for 3 hours a day cause he couldn't pay attention or sit still for more than 2 minutes she said she timed him, my boy ended up finishing out the school year with almost all straight A's but because he didn't fit the mold that they have set for these children he suffered and missed out on so much being able to only attend for 3 hours a day. This episode was just validation for mine and my husband's feelings towards this topic. Thank you The world needs you 3 and more teachers like Rocky ❤

And I feel they are overlooked for the priceless work that they do not just for the student, but for the future. I commend all teachers! Great episode guys!! Loved all the content about education. I 1000% agree teachers today are not what they used to be. My Grade 6,7,8 History teacher Mrs Davidson will always be my favorite teacher ever. She was the best teacher ever. She was fun, she made assignments fun. I loved working on my projects in her class. There isn't many teachers you can say that about now. Because they're not teaching kids life skills and today kids should be learning how to budget money. How to open a bank account. How to deal with people in the real world. Along with the core subjects, English, Math, Science, History ect. Matthew hit on some great topics about boys and men not being recognized I 100% agree. They want men to be weak and women to be the stronger sex. And it should be everyone is equal not 1 person, race, religion, sex is better or above someone else period. Great show today guys. You had a wonderful teacher and there needs to be more like him. And you had a great mom to guide you and she raised with your dad 3 great men. See you next Friday!! 🙏👏🫶❤️

Teachers/councilors at the public elementary school my kids attended, tried to diagnose 2 of our boys (we have 4)as having ADHD and suguested they be medicated. We disagreed, as did their pediatrician. Kids, especially boys get bored easily, especially if they're forced to sit still in a chair for hours. Thank God we didn't listen. One son is a social worker who works with special needs kids, is proficient in ASL and is a 4th degree black belt in TKD and working his way up in BJJ now. The other son is 22, married, owns his own home, attends college, is in the National Guard(and works HR/admin for them), and plays 12 instruments, etc. 💙

My son has adhd, learning disabilities, language acquisition delay, tic disorder, and has socialization issues. His bio mom was on drugs while she was pregnant with him and just left him with so many hurdles. But, he's such a great kid. He's not a genius but he is smart, and regular school is just not made for him. I am a former educator, and I try to stay on top of his academics, but I just don't have the patience to teach him, and I'm afraid that my impatience will drive him even further from liking any kind of education. Unfortunately, I'm a single mom, and I don't have the money to send him to the type of school that y'all are talking about. But, now that I know there are schools like that out there, I will be looking into it, and maybe somehow, someway I can get a scholarship for him so that he can go to a school that can actually reach him.

Comment around 18:50...I have to say I'm a boy mom and I definitely deal with, or "referre", so many emotional things with my son! He's just really aware of everything and too smart 😅 Then sometimes he is a typical, physical wild boy!! 😂

I don’t know what school system that guy is speaking of that doesn’t push reading. In Louisiana all public school kids do AR reading,no matter the school district. Where they read at least 50+ books a year(at or above their reading level) and have to pass a test on it in order to get the points. And vast majority of schools give rewards for different level points and awards at end of year for most points.
