What Killed the Plants vs Zombies Franchise?

Ойын-сауық

Plants vs Zombies is one of the most iconic games of the late 2000s, but nowadays it seems to have been largely forgotten to be the titan it once was. In this video, I plan on answering the question as to what choice(s) led to the situation we're in today.

I made a documentary on PopCap itself if anyone's interested. I tried to take as much of the criticism as I could so there's no overextending or straying too far from the topic displayed in the title, as a lot of people have been having grievances with the fact that this retrospective video goes over the full story. Check it out if you're interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/loSOyNikpb2Wcbw.html CORRECTIONS: PopCap were *technically* the ones who had complete control over whether or not to add microtransactions in PvZ 2. EA just published the second game while giving PopCap a massive incentive to make a lot of profit, causing them to descend to greedy methods. Something I had also forgotten to include was the input of George Fan. He was the one who implemented a lot of character into the first game, and his lack of involvement for the second game could be a possible reason for why the game has a different (not necessarily worse) feel.

I think the reason Garden Warfare was well recieved was that, despite the feel changing massively, it was still a "tower defense" game in spirit. It's jsut that now, you control the towers instead of a omnipotent builder. This especially applies once you start strategizing in the game. That could be a reason why Garden Warfare was well recieved, but Heroes is forgotten.

People often forget PvZ:Heroes exists, but imo it did a great job with its artstyle. It mixes nicely the respective artstyles of both PvZ (cartoonish but weird and a bit gritty) and PvZ2 (softer cartoon), and then adds a dash of super hero comics art to make it its own unique style. And it fits pretty well! The new plants/zombies fit well enough, while the returning ones take cues from either PvZ1, PvZ2, or other sources like PvZ Adventures (the weird facebook game?)

when it was announced that plants could level up in pvz 2, I was very excited, but later I realized that it was probably the worst thing that could happen to the game, not only because of more microtransactions, but also because it removes more solids as a game and as an initial concept with which it had to end.

The leveling system for me give it a fresh new layer of gameplay. However, leveling up the plants was very grindy. I calculated that it'd take 5 to 6 years to level everything (and this wasn't even including masteries). Somebody else posted online something similar, so I wasn't that far off :\ I played the game for 3.5 years on and off, had A TON of fun with it, but had to delete it out of sheer frustration and disgust.

Yeah, I was excited about that because the Chinese version had level ups since much earlier, and seemed super cool, especially when I liked grinding for gems and pots at the infinite gauntlets, and later worlds were just pretty tough for most plants, but it turned out being another kind of grind altogether in the international version, you didn’t get anything from beating levels, you needed to get seed packets, that were only found as specific rewards or randomized in piñatas, I tried to get my plants upgraded without spending money, but got tired of that very quickly, it sucks how limited it is if you don’t spend a lot

Something important about the first game: You’re constantly unlocking plants which either solve a problem which has just been introduced, or make it easier. You get potato mines to deal with Pole Vaulters, and then afterwards are rewarded with the Snow Pea as an easier method of killing them. You get the Fume Shroom telling you it can go thru screen doors, and immediately are faced with screen doors. After you struggle to kill miners with starfruit, you’re given the more effective Split Pea. I could go on with literally every time you get a plant. Yes, some plants are more useful than others, but every time you get a plant, it’s helpful for the very next level

  • @T3rr0r626

Absolutely. PvZ 1 has at least 1 or 2 plants that can foil each special type of zombie, thus allowing for options. Another example would be blover replacing either cactus or plantern. Although you have it backwards about starfruit since you actually unlock it after split pea.

It feels very disingenuous to me to say that EA had no role in the downfall of PVZ. In addition to George Fan being laid off due to visionary differences, there are also two interviews (can’t link in the comments of course) that suggest EA played a heavy role. One employee said that the CEO of EA at the time brought up the idea of “rentable plants” because of a suggestion from his child, and another employee said that they suggested making two different PVZ games, one closer to the spirit of the original and the other with more monetization. That employees idea was disregarded, and they were taken off the PVZ2 team and later asked to leave the company.

Your video is still accurate if you remove the EA part, though I imagine they still played a role in some elements in the games. I agree eitherway. I used to think PVZ was a franchise known for not having a bad game, I enjoyed all the games, until 2019 came around with BFN and PVZ3. Ironically, I think Popcap didn't do enough for the franchise and separated their fanbase too much. Consoles and PC were part of the original success, there is nothing wrong with the Garden Warfare games, but for tower defense fans, they were left in the dust. To this day, there's still not a traditional tower defense pvz game for these platforms. Hell PVZ1 isn't even available for modern console platforms, except xbox backward compatibility. Merchandises of the franchise also declined immediately, for a game that has a similar appeal to Pokemon- Popcap never took advantage of it; you can only buy chinese bootlegs of the characters. Plants and zombies are perfect for marketable plushes, they could've had a good source of revenue with this and establish more of a stronger connection to younger audiences collecting them. There's so much Popcap could've done but I think being slow and failing to take advantage of things (except microtransactions lol) is what left them in this position. For fans of the franchise, there's little for them to stay around for because of how slow popcap been for the past years. That's probably because Popcap has so many restructures in the past year.

PvZ 1 was the first PvZ game I played but I have always loved PvZ 2 more, even after controversial updates. I love the extra content to do after Adventure Mode. I actually bought a PS4 simply for Garden Warfare 2 and I had no idea what type of game it was. If it wasn't for GW2, I might never have gotten a console. GW2, despite being different, instantly became my favourite game and replaced PvZ 2. I have loved all the PvZ games made, even BFN but I feel that BFN is to blame for many problems. Getting rid of variants made BFN like any other shooter and the overall design for the game was a downgrade. I think that in order to revive my and many others favourite franchise they need to make GW3 and build upon GW2 and listen to player feedback. They also need to make desperate changes to PvZ 3 as right now it is pretty meh and won't be enough to bring back the franchise.

I do have alot of nostalgia for the first game, but i recently played the second aswell as gw2, and they were not actually that bad. While the second game does require you to spend $150+ to unlock everything, it still has enough content to be fun. And as gw2 does have paid stuff, its only for cosmetics and plant variants. The plant variants do change some things about how the plant works, you can still play the plant. Plus, you get a good amount of coins for doing things.

The main issue I have with PVZ 2 Compared to 1 is the pacing was absolutely terrible in 2 compared to 1. And I have played through BOTH of these Games PVZ 1 had a nice formulaic progression through 5 worlds before you beaten the main story, then you had the extra content to do which is all optional but required if you want to beat everything that changes up the gameplay from 1 to 100 at times, and its put in such a nice package where you can pick up and play these mods whenever you feel like it. The only thing I wished is that Some of the minigames were treated the same as Vasebreaker and I Zombie, instead of Exclusive to minigame. Stuff like Zombotany, Portal Combat BeGowled, Walnut Bowling. And I wish there were endless Survival of the other 4 Worlds other then the Beach World. It was a nice time playing although compared to 2. it was on the short side for major content. PVZ 2 on the other hand I feel fell from grace hard. At the start of the game it was planned to be an evolving series where the game would add more content as time went on which isn't bad at first. and for a start it looked really promising. with Ancient Egypt, Pirate Sea's, Wild West & Far Future having really good balancing both in Levels. Plant Placement Mechanics and Ideas. and if anyone would say PVZ 2 is better for these 4 worlds then I would agree with them. However then the Dark Ages came out and while I like the idea of world and its gimmicks. its also a bit too short of a world which makes sense for there's to be only 5 plants to obtain. However, then for every other world. they would have 5 plants to unlock (Neon Mixtape Tour has 6) for a 32 Level Worlds. It got stail very quickly, not to mention the actual worlds themselves having insanely bad pacing throughout in the levels. I think PVZ 2 failed at realizing what mechanics were added into the game when making these worlds. because on the chance the player plays in chronological order. They would get a good feel for the overarching gameplay. However the problem is with how the game originally handled worlds. and that is with after Level 1-16, you would get a Key. this Key lets you unlock one of the worlds for players to play on and you can choose any world to play on and in any order you like. all you would have to do is get through to the half way mark in these worlds and get another key. theres a lot of customizability to work with here, so you shouldn't have worlds that drag on for so fucking long without anything new with the game like the other worlds I just mentioned. this would essentially force the players to play in a certain order because I think most people would want to play a 25 Level world where you unlock 7 new plants for free. then to play a 32 level world where you unlock 5 free plants. and then the change to the Keys made things worse imo. Now after 1-16 you get all the keys for every single area. and while this initially sounds nice. the problem is now players would feel like tip toeing around the game in order to select what plants they want, taking a lot of the challenge out. not to mention Microtransactions which weren't that bad for the first 4 worlds. past then it went from pretentious to fucking unreal. The new Minigames weren't as creative this time around. the Old minigames weren't elevated much at all. Survival was better but I would consider it something different then survival because it plays more focused on a rougelike more then evolution. Arena was a complete nightmare, The Seed packets were the definition of a joke. The only reason this game isn't dead is the creators KEEP, ADDING, MORE, PLANTS.... like seriously WHAT THE FUCK. WHY ARE THERE SO MANY!?!?!?!?!?!!?!. If you're going to make this many Plants fort Seed Packets. Maybe Make some extra fucking worlds maybe. because something like this does not keep a game alive. it kills the game in more ways then 1. and they don't even have the same fucking art style. they make wayyyy to many unnecessary updates to PVZ 2 where Heroes has More to offer at this point and the game was completely abandoned after the Triassic update (which honestly could have just been combined into 1 update and have both Evolving and Dino Roar Mechanics thrown in) The Power Ups feel more like a Band-Aid, rather then fixing the balancing of the gameplay What in the fuck are the Mints The CHINESE Version of PVZ2 was an overall better experience The Ads. (And no. turning on airplane mode doesn't change the fact the adds exist in the first place. equally important to note why you need wifi on a phone to begin with.) Theres a lot more I could go into but this is the gripes I have, not everything is bad. like I think having Gemium plants are a good thing to the game where you can buy them at any time. I just wished you couldn't buy Gems so you would actually have to work for them and that to compensate for this. the prices would be a bit cheaper The Zen Garden had a better purpose inside of this game The First 5 Worlds are generally pretty good But going past there. Theres not a whole lot that PVZ 2 actually did that aged well compared to the first game. and called people Nostalgia-Blind is showing you have no actual argument against someones claim. However if I had to choose, I would prefer playing PVZ 2 then PVZ 3 anyday

I can definitely agree that I could have (and should have) gone into more detail about the game design behind all of the games after 2. The issue is that I only give myself one week to make these videos, and that means I have to spend more time on some parts and less time on others. I got bored of writing the script by the second half so I somewhat brushed over the shooters and heroes. I’ve actually never played any of the shooters besides the first one and that definitely shows. It at least explains why I was unable to actually “review” them. So I instead just went over the impact those games had.

(Except beach day, I still got PTSD from how GOD DAMN HARD IT WAS) and the bosses offered good chalenge. Sure the increased variety of plants meant that some where uterly useless, like the peashooter but I didn’t realy cared that mutch about it. Also removing the purple lants was ofr me an upgrade because I hated that system. You wree alreday extremelly restricted by the a,ount of plant you could take in any given match, and they serevd to further restricted your ‘deck’ and their ice age long cool down was enougth to earn my scorn. So I would say good ridence. The only real downside is that I was almost required to pass by the pirate world in order to get the dragon mouth (back then it was one of the most broken plant in the game) as it single handedly made game so much easier. I stoped playing it for a while (I got bored like I always do) and tried to return to the game at one point. And by that time paid plants and mastery level had showed their ugly heads. Man I miss the older game, defenitly not what it used to be.

So it shows that there are more and different zombie groups and bosses all around the world. I think it would be fun to have a game that we can travel the world with our seeds and save people from zombies. We could find new seeds too. We would learn more and more about how Zombies first appeared and who's responsible for that and the last boss would be the one who created zombies. Yes, most of the fan theories says that Dave and Zomboss have a big role in that but what if they wouldn't? What if the one who created bloom and doom co. is someone different than we thought?

The first 4 games (pv1, pv2, gw1, and gw2) were my jam growing up. I remember when the first game came out and watching let’s plays on it and really wanting to buy it but I had no clue how to buy games on pc at the time. Then during Halloween they had a promotion that had free codes that people gave out and luckily I got one. Soon after I got the game on the ds and played it all the time at my friends house on the Xbox. It’s probably the first game I can remember being addicted to. I downloaded the second game the second it was out on my iPod and later iPad, and me and my friends used to fight for free Xbox live codes in game discs to be able to play garden warfare lmao. This game series shaped my childhood and despite some of them not aging too well (pv2) I still look on it fondly. Unfortunately the humbleness of the first game and even the first garden warfare can’t be recreated.

Also I always found Zomboss's note rather chilling the first time I saw it when playing the ds version, so I think it was a nice introduction to his character as definitely being different from the other zombies, that difference being what gives him the grasp over his underlings.

I really want to emphasize how great the Garden Warfare franchise was until Battle for Neighborville 'cause I'm pretty sure it formed part of a lot of our childhoods. The first Garden Warfare was, for me, the first ever shooter I ever got to play in console and ultimately made me fall in love with that Plants vs Zombies was as a whole. My parents were extremely restrictive with the content I consumed as a child and forced me to play games only according to my age, and Garden Warfare was the closest thing I got from a shooter like Call of Duty or Halo, for example. Garden Warfare remained somewhat friendly for my age, and I remember making a lot of friends back then and even use the public voice chat just to have fun and it was AWESOME. It was very addictive, there were so many gamemodes, and the maps felt dynamic each time, either as a plant or as a zombie. I really didn't care too much about customisation, but the diversity from plants and zombies was for me the cherry on top. I have so many fond memories with the game that I would even consider play my PS3 once again only to play Garden Warfare for nostalgia. For Garden Warfare 2... that's when I felt the game fell flat. Way too many plants, matches fell over saturated, mechanics shifted a lot, if not entirely, and all the maps really didn't click with me. The first game was so simple yet so compelling, keeping you hooked even after hours of playing and the simplicity from its formula made it enjoyable for a younger audience, but as for the sequel, it felt a bit TOO much for me as a kid, and since haven't given it a chance to try it. Nonetheless, it was a huge success and took a very important part on the boom the franchise had on the modern console era. Seriously, if you haven't played Garden Warfare, play it or look up some videos about it on KZread. It was very fun and was a very crucial part for me on my gaming experience and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you for the deep insight on the video for the rest of the games!

For bfn it’s alright I didn’t knew they came out with another one I wasn’t really caught up but it’s a alright game Ik there wasn’t a lot on bfn but I gave it a try. I agree with everything here. Even the fact that I couldn't play most fps games (like halo or cod) so I played pvz gw1 a ton. Then when gw2 was released, I ended up playing that even more with friends and still do since that game made it more appealing to me and my friends for the new playable characters and most other things it added. Even to this day we do fights in backyard battleground, but bfn just sucked I played it q couple of times on switch and pc but yeah completely lost its charm.

I think what killed the game was that EA regarded the group of players that played the first PVZ as a collective group of gamers overlooking the exclusive groups that exist within the group. Making the sequel a mobile game only alienated the PC and Console players. I played the first game on PC then was forced to switch to mobile for the sequel. I had to improvise and force the game to run on a PC. The sequel was great and better than the first one content wise, but the whole idea of playing a mobile game on my PC was too much to ignore and the magic was lost. Only went as far as PVZ2.

I know it's never going to happen, but I want a Plants vs. Zombies Trilogy Bundle for modern systems (PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and mobile). It would come with a 'Definitive Edition' of PvZ1, with all the achievements and minigames from the mobile version + Versus mode from consoles, a PvZ2 Definitive Edition adapted for PC and consoles with no ads and premium plants being completely free + the two China-exclusive worlds being available for all regions, and finally PvZ3 when it eventually releases fully. That would be a great way to "revive" the franchise and alienate new and old players, but of course EA doesn't care about all of that so they'll continue to be as scummy as they are now.
